Very impressive, those rubber feet are usually pretty grippy on the concrete. The truck and your skills are amazing.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Beautiful Reg! All the details sure paid off. The handles, the windshield, the wipers, and paint all turned out really nice. You have to be happy with the results! The 850 looks great driving around in your videos. It's very sharp.
Did I read right, that your differentials have already let go? You might want to give these E-Savage differential kits a try. Made by a Canadian shop as well, so shipping shouldn't kill you. http://gcmracing.ca/viewitem.php?productid=44 For your cab clearance lights, I would just run 3mm orange LEDs inside them, with the appropriate dropping resistors, which depends on your battery source. It's pretty easy to figure out. It's hard to tell, but are your headlights already functional too? In some of the photos it looks like you have white LEDs inside them, or else it's just the aluminum reflecting the natural light. You could probably try warm white LEDs there too. |

The diffs are fine until I pull a generator across the floor or load it with logs and drive on the gravel.. I pulled apart the rear diff Thursday night and it was sick(I had one spare set of spiders). I think they are sick again so I need to do something different. I will shoot those guys an email and see if their upgrade will work with my axle shafts. I almost bought aluminum housings in the beginning but didn't. I would like to do the upgrade that adds another shaft and bevel gear set. That would help displace the load more evenly on the side gears. I think I am expecting a lot trying to move around close to 100lbs with these tiny little pieces:jaw:. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
It's kind of an after thought now, Reg, but maybe some 1/8 scale buggy differentials would have been a stronger option. Or some nitro Savage differentials.... It would stink to have to remake the axles, but maybe you could do a retro-fit.
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I'll get it figured out. Funny how the parts I thought would be good are the ones giving the problems. I will try the aluminum housings and see what happens. Axial makes them and the local hobby shop has them in stock. They may reduce the flex a little and give better gear lash. If not I'll have to find some lighter wood! I could make spools but it would never steer.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Great job Reg, it's a beauty:)
Love the videos, it moves so realistic due the weight and size:D |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Simply stunning!!!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg which 1's did you get ? I put the nitro sets in the mack and the 990 and they took some abuse
truck looks great :jaw::jaw: |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
These ones are from the E-savage. The axles have two flats and slide into the side gears. I'll pull it apart today and see what's happening for sure. I'll take some pictures and post them up. I guess this is the trouble you run into sometimes when the stuff is so big and heavy. The truck and trailer are around 50 pounds and it moves that just fine with no issues. Add a load and $h!t goes south...it looks pretty though...

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I assume this 1 http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-Racing-E...item51adac50e1
this is the 1 I use http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-Nitro-Sa...item53f86f238a Much beefier and the gears are hard as (-)3!! |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Yes Steve, same as the first one except on mine the axles enter the housing and slip into the side gears. I don't think I could make what you're using work in these rear ends so I will try to upgrade the plastic case to aluminum. If that doesn't work then I will make new diffs in the fall...
Thanks for the help! |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I'm wondering If the gear mesh is a little loose . Yea put the alum case on . I have that on mine . The plastic may be flexing just enough under load to tear them up . Worse case you could lock em up ;) Turn a solid spool on your lathe ? to put the ring gear on . Looks like you got enough weight and length it shouldn't effect steering to much . + you wont get stuck unless you spin all 4 :D

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I did some more fiddling and I think I made some progress. There is no shims for the planet gears and upon further inspection there needs to be. You can't get good gear lash by using the supplied shims on the side gears alone so I made some out of washers for the other gears. I had to assemble and disassemble them a few times each, carefully filing the washers each time. Seems to be much better now as it towed the gen-set from one end of the shop to the other with no complaints even while turning left and right.
Here's what breaks... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7b05c8ba.jpg Here's what I'm hoping fixed it... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps65331d2f.jpg and a couple pictures of my trucks together.... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3fbbc923.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9b178c3a.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps24b020e2.jpg Thanks for lookin |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, shimming the differential's planet gears is a good idea. I think that will help you for sure, but getting an aluminum diff carrier in there to support the gears will be better yet. Who knows, maybe between both of these ideas you'll be all right! I have to agree with you....locked differentials, and a full load will probably equal a truck that only goes straight!
Boy, the 850 sure looks good outside! I was meaning to ask - how did you make the window gaskets? I need to figure that out for my Needlenose KW. I was thinking square o-ring material (splicing kit), or styrene (probably the better idea) would okay. Just kind of fiddly. I'd love to hear how you pulled it off because it looks really nice. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Yeah hopefully I will have the diff issue solved now. I will buy the aluminum housings and cross my fingers.
The window gaskets(Euc and KW) are made from old wiper blades(I keep telling you guys...HOARDER:D). I use the part that holds the wiper to the arm. One side of it is a little wider so you have to trim that off somehow or it will not sit flat in tight corners. Works pretty decent for the price of a pair of wipers you were gonna through away ... One wiper does a couple windows if your careful. |

You're a genius! :D I might have to give that a try. The only problem I see is that maybe the gasket would be a little to large for my tiny little truck! |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
The details you keep adding just makes the build even more impressive. If anyone is looking for ready-made H-channel rubber for windows, http://www.knupershop.de has two sizes and they are available through a US source, http://www.ModelMotorCars.com. I am using this for my Payhauler truck. (In the Knuper parts list it is under Profiles: Rubber H-profile.)

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
That truck looks SOOOOOO good. And when you are driving in lower speed it looks very realistic. Guess those trucks was quite low speed specified to cope with the tonnage fully loaded.
About rubber H-shape. Don't find them special easy to work with. Have tried to get real glas into my cab and rubber keeps popping out. Was told you have to glue them to cab BEFORE trying putting in windows in them. Reg, enjoying this build so much that a Pete and trailer coming higher in "to do list". Dan |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, despite my little shenanigans, I seriously thank you for the window gasket idea. :D You're a great builder. Your plumbing looks awesome. You even painted the ball valve hand red. That's an eye for detail. So all these log trucks seem to have water tanks on them. Forest fire prevention? Hard to see how a diesel would start a fire in the woods, but it must have happened enough...?
And thanks for the link to the H-gasket material Ken. I'll have to give that a look! |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Nathan ..the water is for the Brakes ..Most of the logging shows here are quite high in these mountains and I have seen grades over 12%..Some of these roads a re very scary and most have no room for trucks to pass side by side ..They are always in radio contact to make sure they are in pullouts for the loaded to pass by ..Very impressive to have one drive by you full speed and fully loaded ..
Great ideas for the deails Reg ..cant wait to see this Brute in person ..It may steal the show in Duncan |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks for compliments guys. I'm trying to stay focused on the small details. This build has encouraged me to revisit my other stuff and add detail. Yesterday I did some stuff on the Euc and replaced some screws on the Volvo with scale bolts.
Nate, the red handle on the ball valve is shrink tube. Gives it the rubberized look. My Dad put me in touch with the second owner of the real truck and he has some more photos of it for me. May be too late to add or change some things but hopefully it will help to display the model at shows. At any rate I'm excited to see some more photos of our local logging history. Last November we took a trip up island to see my future sister inlaw and her boyfriend. He is a woods foreman for WFP so he took us out to see their current logging sites. One of the new roads was 30% grade! He said that only a couple of the drivers would haul on it, the rest didn't want anything to do with it! Scary steep and very narrow! Reg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Back to work finishing up the 850... My parents were nice enough to take the horn in to the local chrome plating joint for me so it's now nice and shiny. Yesterday I messed around and made the rest of the windows as well as the grab handles on the drivers side. I'm in the process of remaking the exhaust tips as the angle was wrong so I'll be finishing up those today and getting a coat of paint on them.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Finished up the exhaust with new pipes, flappers and some paint. I got another good photo of the original KW today and seen some things I needed to add. The parts are made and I'm back to waiting for paint to dry...

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Nice work Reg!
Your attention to detail on this truck shows how much this build means to you. ( and the fact you hate the detail work:D ) We have all been amazed during this build and it's nice to see it all continue and include the final touches:) Thanks for keeping us posted and I hate to see the day you post the 850 as officially done:(:confused: Mario |

I made up some steps for the frame behind the water tank. In the pictures I was loaned yesterday you can see that it had one on the drivers side...passenger side is a guess...some had both, some had one, and some didn't have either...I guess no one will ever know for sure anyway because the truck is long gone and the guys that worked around her don't remember or are gone too. some new pics later...Reg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Hey Reg,
this is a real perfect truck, wish to have one for myself 1 million stars |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks Wolfgang!
It was my birthday today so I spent it like any other good day, working on my toys!:D I started off my day by loading up the 850 and various parts of my other equipment and heading to the sign shop. After spending about an hour there I now have decals coming for all of my machines. It will be a week or two before I see them but it should add some nice finishing touches to them. The 850 also received it's steps today and I have a couple other pieces painted and waiting to go on... Thanks for looking, http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6ab83ac7.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psbbe75057.jpg |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I think the problem your having is due to the bevel gear not having a solid back behind the teeth. It's spreading he teeth then braking them... If you look at the tamiya bevel gears you will see they are flat on the backside. This helps share the load . Looks like yours have a space between the teeth which will bend and flex untill it weakens it. ?
That being said I have broken a tooth on my globes bevel after pulling 4 bricks on my flatbed over curbs all day. I was making my steer axel come off the ground when climbing curbs or going over big bumps while on the throttle. That's my .02 hope you get it resolved |
