The excavator is looking good!

It seems as though Mr. Nutters has been framed/caged based on the labels!? You sure you didn't escape and trash his new parts?:lol::lol::lol::p

Top view of hood, the decal of fan motor is visible.

This is the body contacts
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psxg11cjq5.jpg

And this is the underside of hood contacts. So now I can completely remove hood to access batteries without wires interfering. This hood was just the prototype but the topside will be finished and it works so it will be final.

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

So which way is the fan turning, exhausting air out the top?

Cooper 01-19-2015 04:29 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

In the pic air is blowing down into compartments. About 30% battery and 70% pump/esc ect.. I have the ability to reverse the fan unit. Not electrically because it's a computer fan but can physically invert it to blow air out. I was at a toss up on what is best. Air down will pull dust and dirt into vs pulling air out doesn't cool as much. But the way the side vents are placed air can flow from sides as well as under boom. I may reverse it to pull warm air out as it may lessen dust. Don't really know till some dry dirty days. How are others? Blowing air down onto components or trying to pull hot air out?

Supermario 01-19-2015 05:34 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

The way I see it. Hot air rises so why try forcing it down when you can help pull it up?
And I think your right about the dust factor, another reason to push air out vs draw In.

Cooper 01-19-2015 06:43 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Yeah that's how 1:1 are,,, the fan is just wedged in there. It's pretty snug that it wouldn't come loose but I can still dig it out and invert it. So that's what I'll do , have to file off the other mounting tab it has and ya wouldn't see the sticker anymore :). Hope mom doesn't get into any hardcore gaming on her computer and miss the cooling fan:lol:

Looking real good, and that pump is so quiet! can't wait to get mine swopped over.

Are you running a bec? if so did you cut the red wire on the pump esc?

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Nice work on the railings Cooper, is that tubing or rod?

Cooper 01-20-2015 05:31 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Exclusive, don't hesitate to remind me of any events in our area, I'm in central pa, Williamsport (or close) hopefully when ya see it , it will be painted ready for work. If by York I may have some paint worn off by then and have any bugs worked out.

Stuart, I'm running the radio off the pump esc, so no I didn't cut any of pump wires. The two drive esc and slew ring esc (original one from the 4200) are using just the signal wire (yellow ones for drive motors and white wire for turntable esc in the pics ). And yes the pumps are super quiet. I haven't put more than 300psi (?bar) through it but pump makes easy work at 60%~70% speed to get that. Kinda letting everything break in a bit while testing.

Truckmaker, the railings are 3/32 brass rod, no reason to mess with crimping tube and solid is easy to work with. Originally I was going to make aluminum bolts with 3/32 holes in top for railings and could thread the aluminum to also act as a bolt to hold top plate on, but I think having 1-72 bolts will look a bit better. Having som fun in adding scale appearances. :).

Will keep that in mind!! :) thank you!!

Happy happy!!! Joy joy!! This was part of my Xmas from wife and myself, it finally restocked and picked up today. Im not partial to grizzley stuff but they are in my backyard so to speak. It's a 10x22 variable speed lathe!! Always wanted to be able to change speeds easily!!! Now it's up on the stand , had to bring over the motor hoist. Now the fun begins, tear down and make better!! And I did get a quick change tool post too!! So I guess this means I'm not purchasing a adt but have to make one. Darn!!! :)

Now I see why you got Mr Nutters to power the lathe with a squirrel cage modification ! Mike I do enjoy your threads , your ability with trucks is much more than I have with trains

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Thanks mike, I didn't know what I was getting into when I first got the mill/lathe combo. I strongly suggest anyone getting some to get separate machines if possible. Anyone want a mill/lathe combo? Got to get rid of one ;).

Hay Mario, I love the hat!!! The dog thinks I've been to Canada now!!
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psaft6uo64.jpg

And did a bit more work on the cat-to-be, have a bunch of 1-72 bolts so I've been trying to use em up. I never knew bolts and screws are the same depending on having a nut, bolts have a nut to go with them and screws are inserted into something. Ha I am still capable of learning :).

And east coast is getting dumped on with snow, my area not bad but others might get 3'.

Yes, me too, wear them out till the fall apart :). Although I do have to say the hat is darn nice, and it will be kept clean and hidden from anyone with a slimy nose!! Kind of funny, right after that pic I put it up and noticed some slobber!! Went right away a spiffed up again:). That will be the only time that tainted nose get close;). I'll have it on at the next show just for you Mario!!

In builder you talking about that international? She is a well used and abused toter. We just use it for spotting homes, been out of road service for about 11years. Has an omni hitch on back, soo nice having that hitch!! I don't think it's been out of low range for a couple years. Too expensive to keep a truck on the road unless I'm hauling at least one a week.

Yesterday I spent a lot of time trying to load pics to photobucket and kept getting error. My ISP has been super slow lately and just figured it was them. But now I see they are up and can load photos!?!?!? Computer technology, I like the stuff I can see and touch, ya all know that small tool box, hammer and vice grips, what else ya need?

ihbuilder 01-27-2015 12:53 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

yes the IH , We got 1 right after the mack U-model tractor bit the dust for our detach . Nice truck with a kitchen table in it . Pissed me off when mom & pop sold it after I put a bunch of time in body werk and paint in it to pay rental debt off  I hate pullin big iron on tag-a-longs :(

Cooper 01-27-2015 03:20 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

We had a kW before the IH, static ball (up/down) only thing I remember about that truck was it a pain spotting a lot longer wheelbase and at the time I missed the last step climbing out. Just over a knee reconstruction surgery (had been little over a year) and basically tore the replace ligament from that :( waited another year and did it all over :(. Only problem I've had with the IH, air compressor replaced and the right front brake plunger sticks. Just don't use it enough. A couple taps with hammer and she works. Smokes a lot. Always fun to go by the neighbors and punch it when the wind is right :). Lol!!

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Started working on lights, going to have two on top the cab and reinstalling the original ones on the boom. Going to have them on a tx switch.

http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pspiug3m05.jpg

And when the wife came home she said a package was on front door, I got a dro for the lathe. Got it off evilbay, same place I got the one for mill. It's on the cheeper side but no problems with the one I got for mill. Glass scales and sealed pretty well. Oh the fun part of installing!!! Had to pull the fan off the motor so I could tap a hole. For me drilling into the casting isn't fun!! Pretty easy stuff but having to freehand drill and tap. Measure, measure, and measure again!!!

I couldnt help but notice the bent lines at the bottom of the boom, im assuming you did them? If so, im a fan, EXCELLENT work! Hope you got that bad boy all finished up and running at Cabin Fever..... BTW ill be bringing some Budweiser girls ;)

Cooper 02-01-2015 05:11 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Excellent !!!! The bud "girls" aren't twist offs are the? Lol. Need the "un-tie" kind :).

Yes, I did all the hard lines, had to make some dies to get those bends.

Well after about a week I finally got the late squared away, dro and tool post!!
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psporquwb1.jpg

And now I'm going to mill out the center grouser(?) to give a bit more traction in the dirt. I am making a jig so I can run the tracks in the vise, one at a time, without having to disassemble all the links

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Funny how your shop is similar to mine. When I review pictures taken around my business, I see my dogs hanging out here and there.
Your cat looks like my Pomeranian, Same color. Both of my dogs are small so I set them on a bench with my coat or a blanket.:D

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...540/1yZDGX.jpg

Cooper 02-02-2015 07:51 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

They are cute lil' buggers aren't they!! I definitely don't have room for my dogs on the bench!! http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pso8gcicr9.jpg
And he's not sprawled out, he usually takes the whole couch for himself!! So that's why the cats get time in the shop :). I'm not really a cat guy, more a dog guy, but the little furry felines fit in the dumptruck better!! And they don't try and eat the toys!!

So I got started on milling the center grouser out, only have 80-90 more to do!!! The jig I made clamps them at the link area. I can mill about 3 before having to move the track. Only problem is they are not identical and some concave/convex slightly. But once sanded up a bit they will look made that way :)

Joe makes a good point. You'll have to make sure you clean them up real good before going back into the dirt. Otherwise the Sand and grit will cling and collect wearing things out faster than normal ?

Wax and grease remover or paint prep works great for that. But any way it's looking really good I like the way the lift cylenders look vary vary nice job

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

Are those tracks made from steel? Looking at picture they look rusty or just the color of the dirt from your part of the state.

Cooper 02-04-2015 02:35 PM

Re: Great Dane excavating co.

I believe they are cast, yes steel 9w. Late last night I finished up milling all the centers out. As not knowing what I'm doing I found out that a deeper cut and faster feed using a carbide end mill dry was cutting better. Air and a little cutting oil worked best and really made the job go faster. Glad to get that done, hopefully done with steel for a while. I always end up doing a bit of self surgery digging metal slivers from my hands when working with steel.
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psetvllkts.jpg

And again I'm starting another project without finishing another, Great Dane style :). I am going to try and make a folding gooseneck trailer. I'm planning on using full size wheels (have an excess of em) and I figure the little bit of extra height will be better suited than a true lowboy for clearances on my dirt roads. Top off deck will be top of tires. And I may make this with the actuators I have. Plan on making it a complete separate tx/rx so I can stay in my lounge chair while loading ;).
Similar to this one but probably three axles,
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pspzghcj8u.jpg

And not wanting to purchase much I made some duel wheels

Oh and wasn't thinking when working on the hoes lights. The stock light buckets were supplied from tx with a switch. The ones I got from rc4wd are 12v, so I decided to just cross them to the battery (12v) to make sure they worked before soldering/wiring up. Oops, the electrical doohickey from stock was a voltage regulator or tx switch of some sort and they are not 12v!! The got pretty bright for about a second!! And they went dark:(. An they were those bright 5chps or whatever led, so now have to get new led or lights:(. I know better but one of those oh s$|#, why did I do that moments!!

Yea good idea Mario, I will degrease them. I have a lot of dry lube (graphite) that I bathe them in once clean n dry:).
