Hauling dirt outside yesterday with the KH & pup and GL w/belly dump.. blew the pinion out in the middle axle of the GL while ascending to the window; just replaced one on the green GL dump trk.

I got started digging the trench for my crib wall this week. I'm having to cheat a bit with the use of a chisel bar to keep the trench square on the sides, as the 850 doesn't have the nutts to cut sideways.

I'm new here, you have successfully killed about the last 3 nights of my life LOL! Run machinery all day farming and come home and watch machinery run all night, I may have a problem...keep up the good work!

You're welcome or I'm sorry? :p

Thanx, glad to hear you find them entertaining. :)

Making pretty good headway with the trenching this week, biggest bolder so far is about the size of a softball, dig it out with the chisel bar. One post in, three more to go & add the 5/8 pws sheet.

Well you must remember that I always had the LilGiantsConstrCo name sake on my trks & equipment for more than decade Skip? Nobody else in the world uses the same name, hobby or IRL. The basement dig started 8yrs ago, but the last 4yrs it has slowed down greatly after becoming the sole operater of the farm & well, trying to make it last as long as possible. ;)

Greg, I'm digging in the last four posts of the remaining part of the south wooden crib wall. Then I'll be backfilling the air gap. After that's done, then I think I'll start digging down 18" for more headroom.. that should give me another yr or so in the basement before I have nothing left to do.

Hey joe i was watching some of your videos and the cam from cab view is.really cool! Thanks for sharing them. You ever think about getting a wireless cam setup to your tv and operate machines from your living room couch? That would be pretty cool.

Really?! I get dizzy watching those in cab vids, life size or model.

I have no interest in video remote, especially running trks at dangerous heights and trying to judge distance thru a video monitor. But by all means, feel free to show me how it's done Ed. :D

Tonite I finally completed building the last 10 feet of wooden crib wall.

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

A pile of fines in the SE corner (last yr this time it was a deep hole 6x3x4 feet). Quite a bit of this will go in behind the crib wall.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...012/001-12.jpg

The last couple wks I have been cleaning out this dirt from under the west porch, this was wet dirt from the SW wall that I mined away last winter. Bone dry now & crush it into fines.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...2012/002-7.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...012/006-10.jpg

Haul that dirt over here so I can use my screener bucket, pile the screenings in the box and dump the lumps into the bellydump to haul to the crusher.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...012/003-11.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...2012/013-6.jpg

Using lil Red Freddybilt, fashioned up a tailgate lock from a paperclip, so now I can load 'er up & climb the wall without loosing half the load along the way. :D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...2012/008-9.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...2012/009-3.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...2012/010-6.jpg

Upgraded the radio in the JD850 today. Now I got sliders on each side of the tx to control the tracks (sweet control!) & I put my r/c quick coupler (manufactured by Azonic) back on (had to remove it when I built the screener bucket b/c I was out chs with the DX8). This radio has four proportional chs on the sticks, two 2pos, seven 3pos, two sliders & a knob. The rx is 9ch; a different device called X-Plus is needed to get the other 9chs. I don't need the X-Plus at this time. I'm using three of the 3pos switches for dual rates on the bucket, stick & swing. A 3pos switch & the knob are the only two chs not currently in use.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...2012/014-7.jpg

I built this bench 1.5 yr ago to elevate my stool when I was excavating the SW dirt wall, it has now become quite a handy temporary workbench to work on the JD850.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...2012/016-6.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...202012/020.jpg

Getting pretty full of goodies under the hood - Sabertooth 2x25 for the tracks, Sabertooth 2x12 for the swing & screener bucket, Eflite 40amp esc for hyd pump, 2pos esc for the quik coupler, ect...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...2012/019-2.jpg

I wore out another Carson 4:1 box in my KH dump trk & pup, so today I put a 3:1 gear in the dual motor coupler. With the 4:1 I rarely used 1st b/c it was so slow! Now that it will be faster with 3:1 reduction, I changed radios from a DX6i to a DX7s (paired now with the Stahl wheel loader) to make use of the only 3pos switch for the trans. DX6i doesn't have a 3pos switch. These Spektrum radios are Awesomeness! Be it a different radio now, but still the same AR6110e rx. :)

Lots more lil giants to hit the workbench for repairs & upgrades.. gonna be a busy winter for fixing!

Nice radio Joe... now you have one for the whole fleet.

Any reason you went for the hand held version compared the tray?

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

When I was at the St Louis meet last month I held Nate's (pigeonfarmboy) DX10t and didn't like its ergonomics - the sticks were too far inward. I prefer to operate with my thumbs, steadying my hands by holding the edge of the radio with my fingers... I'm getting old(er) and hate change! :D

I like the DX18, it fits my hands perfectly! All the switches & sliders are within easy reach too.

elliot330 11-16-2012 06:42 PM

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

I can understand where you are coming from... the DX10t is wide and only really designed to be held on a harness. I've ran out of mixes on my DX10 - I really need your software in my radio :-)

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

I'll have to check the 18 out . I didn't know it had sliders :) I'm gona need that for the twins ;) Nice to see the lil red cracker box get so haul time . When you say sliders , is there another pot on the left like on the right on the dx8 ? It's hard to tell from pics .

Lil Giants 11-16-2012 07:08 PM

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

Is it six mixes for the DX10t? What are doing with that tx to need so many Elliot?

Steve, pot - as in knob? No, just one of them right side.

There's a rotary slider on both the upper right & left side. I'm using right for/rev - left for turning.

I've been trying to figure out how to program some deadband on the sliders, they're pretty touchy.

Overall, the DX18 has to be the sweetest & easiest radio I've ever had to program! ;)

How long you got!!

Yes it only has 6 mixes

The 1st 4 mixes are mixed from Pump to Boom, stick, bucket and adjustable boom.

I then need 4 more to control the demolition grab with the little switches on the stick.. and I'd also "like to control the tracks with the gimbles as well... but I've got no mixes left.

In your instance Joe, I'd program flight mode for tracking to site and then a flight mode for digging.

In the tracking flight mode, I'd mix the throttle and elevator sticks to drive the tracks kinda like a tank? I think it would offer better control than the sliders? Just a thought and what I want to do!

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

Joe - How many 2 pos and 3 pos switches do you have?

Lil Giants 11-16-2012 07:49 PM

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

Flight mode is a great idea!... Precision control on the sticks for long moves isn't needed.. although, perhaps the difference in EPA from one flight mode to the other would work. Have one mode with a really low EPA while digging in a tight area & the other for high EPA's for long moves. Great tip Elliot. :)

I thought you replied rather quickly after my long post, just looked at the pics, eh? What chs are listed above the radio picture. ;) :p :D

Yep that's it - don't even need to edit the EPA, just adjust the % of track throttle in the mix - or leave it at 100% as the sticks allow much better control and self center if you need to stop quickly !

Personally, i don't like the sliders, they can get knocked and are really hard to center in a hurry!... But i guess if you are tracking across the basement then its like cruise control :-)

Opps:o I did just look at the pics!
It sounds like you are not using the knob for your pump? Do you run it flat out?

Now I've read it... how comes you have your dual rates on 3 different switches? Do you like to vary the bucket speed without the stick and so on?

Lil Giants 11-17-2012 07:12 AM

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

I have the pump on Aux2 (3pos) & set the sub trim way low so the middle position is like 20%. With the mix switch on, pump rpm will ramp up when the valve chs are activated. Due to the large size of the bl motor & pressure set to 25bar, have to have some rotation of the hyd pump all the time so the esc doesn't freeze (a squeal can be heard in some of the early vids of the JD850 b/c the pump speed got too low during delicate movement of the valves - emptying the bucket out across a full full trk to fill every corner without spilling). I could vary the pump rpm on the knob, but I like quick on/off of the switch.

I have two valve settings for the bucket & stick; one setting opens the valves fully without much stick movement for fast digging, the other setting it takes alot stick movement to open the valve for much finer control - like for changing buckets.

I have 3 different settings for the swing as well.

Hi,

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this idea... After playing with my DX10T over the weekend I now have a similar setup for the 944... It should make it much easier to get that fine control...

Lil Giants 11-22-2012 08:39 AM

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

Yes Neil, all those settings... atm I only have one more ch than the DX8, but I'm having trouble trying to program the DX18 with the same fine control that I had with the DX8.. trying to diagnose what the problems are with my dealer, this DX18 is doing things it shouldn't be and not doing things it should be.

You're nearly half my age Martin, this electronic stuff should be a snap for you! :D

You're welcome Joe, it was great seeing you again. I'm looking forward to seeing what your next project will be. :)

Thank you kindly livefree.. where would we be today without the internet with the freedom to learn & share with one another around the globe?

Cheers Andy! The added programming does make for much more enjoyable play. ;)

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

Hello Elliot, got it used from some one in the states last spring. It came with a Servonaut system - lights & sounds.. that lasted about one day and then I opted for Sabertooth control and an esc on the pump, much quieter, smoother control. ;) I need to make a different bucket.. next winters project in my new shop.

Here's the start of the floor excavation, dig down about 18 inches, I think that's the 850's max reach. That should keep me busy for another yr or two. ;)

Nice to see you got the coupler on again, got it to work with the new controler?

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

Thanx Kalle, the coupler is working xllnt (hope I didn't jinx myself admitting that out loud lol), makes quick work changing buckets/ect, getting pretty good at doing quickly too.

No, I kept the 2pos controller, I got the timing just right now. I didn't want to have rely on my counting every time & it's impossible to hear if the furnace is running. I used a dab of red locktite on the union, probably stronger than epoxy. ;)

Something odd though, sometimes while using the tracks, especially turning, the high amp draw on the 2x25 some how causes the 2pos esc to activate, the pins cycle in then out again. Were you using a 2pos esc too? This ever happen to you?

Joe, just a thought - are you running an external BEC, or receiver battery pack? If you are running on the ESC's internal BEC, a heavy current draw can over tax the ESC, and the internal BEC circuitry starts acting weird, or can cut out and make servos, or anything else plugged in, act strange or glitch.

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

That's probably what it is then Nathan, the Sabertooth is providing the BEC. I'd rather use the E-Flite's BEC, but I have found that disconnecting the red wires from the Sabertooth rx leads, then the Sabertooth does not work.

If you are using a separate BEC then the red wires from the sabertooth being unhooked should be fine. My CAT tractor, Track loader, and dozer all use a separate BEC and the red wires are pulled from the plug and the sabertooths work just fine. The sabertooth I bought for the CAT tractor came with an external BEC and the red wires are not even in the harness going to the esc just the ground and signal. I do know one thing for sure never unhook the ground or the signal wire has nothing to get a base reading from they work together.
