Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

this project just hit a hugh speedbump. my car broke down, and I need another one. so the finances reseved for this project are needed somewhere else.
now I have 2 choises or 3 actually, 1 sit and wait till I have enough to buy the parts I need. 2 built all the parts I can and buy the rearaxle and wheels later. 3 build some other cabs to sell. and buy the parts I planned. I could mix option 2 and 3, but in the time needed to build the parts I can build a cab.

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

just a little update. I decided on builing a cab to sell. and buy the parts I can't build.
so just dividing my time on the projects at hand.
I have the torpedo chassis at the right lenght. and the sparewheelmounth on.
http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/dd161571.JPG

the 4x4 had a little work in the tipperbox.
the mechanics will be insired on the carson tipper system. with the motor for the system under the cab, and the drive motor will be mounted between the chassis. like the original asiatam chassis. there will not be a problem there

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/daf16001572.JPG

the frame rail of the tipperbody is just put on there with double sided stickytape. it needs some adjustment

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

You got skilz! What do you use to smooth the cab? I tried o play with some putty for plastic models, but didnt really like it. I dont know If I did something wrong, or there is something more that needs to go on top. When I sanded the putty, it would smooth out, but I would always have a line where the putty stops and plastic begins. I couldnt smooth that transition.
Am I just lazy or do I need more different stuff to put on?

PetervR 07-15-2016 07:01 AM

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

hi. getting it smooth is not that hard. the way I treat my models. is like it are real trucks.
the stuff I use comes form the carparts store not the modelstore.
an other thing is the line between putty and metal wood or plastic will show. the simpelest way to prevent that is to cover it all with putty. and have "the line" on a spot where it's oke to have a "line".
I have multiple layers of primer, filler, putty and sprayputty. if you want a brand. Motip paint and primer, and Alabastine carputty and sprayputty

Very interesting!

About the resin, is it a single component? Not two parts with hardener? How long or how slow does it finally get hard to sanding stage?

Thanks for all the info!

Jim

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

the resin is a 1 component. the setting time is a few ours in the "cold and dark" and about half an our on a warm sunny day. I usually apply it last thing in the evening. and next morning it's set. to make it compleet
the putty I use takes about 10 to 15 minutes to be hard enough to sand.
the sprayputty takes about 5 to 10 minutes to set.
at this stage I use 180 grain dry sandpaper. just befor the colorpaint. I use wet sandpaper 280 of 400grain.
just as importand. let the sandpaper do the job. don't push to hard.
and this is for the torpedo.
the 4x4. I'm going to experiment with it. so failure is an option. it will get acrilic paint, form a tube. and I'll brush it on. It will also get some 2 component rush in some places. this way it's easiers to weather the truck.

HI.
just last week your dogs chaised my daughters cat though the house.
with a predictable end result. the dogs still chaise the cat. and the 4x4 droped of the table.

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/DAF160027072.JPG

it looks bad. but this is a cab originaly build to be a positive mold. not to be the cab on the truck. and it had a few weak spots I just didn't know to find out this way.

it's glued back in place, and I took some time to think if I was going to use the accidend to wheater the truck and put some rust around the crack, or make it smooth with putty.

yesterday I made it smooth. and I'll weather it in the spots I want

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

just didn't put a picture of the rebuild cab here.
http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/daf160028072.jpg

and I was talking about weahtering this truck just a little.
I found this picture on the web and I like the way it rusted. it might be like this one. but in red.

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/daf160028071.jpg

just started planning the rust. up to now I was working to get a smooth surface. with a neutral color. because the red I'm going to use is a bit transparant. zo next up is braun. than salt, than the neutral color, than the red. and than let magic to it's thing ;-)

I'm glad you were able to repair it. It would be a shame to put all that hard work into it and not be able to use it at all.

You do some really nice work, amasing what you can make out of cardboard.

PetervR 08-03-2016 04:39 PM

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

Cardboard works so much easier than plastic. Just bending without heating it
Sanding the basic shape is just a minutes work. And after the quick and easy build fixate is all with the resin. Well basecally the same way Formula 1 cars are build. I just use cardboard instead of carbon. And my resin doesn't need to go into an autoclave ;-)

The crashed cab just got some rust

The salt technique doesn't work without the airbrush. Luckely rust comes in more shapes than one

It's turning out great!

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

well I'm back online.
the two trucks made it to the show they were build for. but not completed.
and even unfinished they where noticed.
having been side tracked by the fleu, a cab build for a clubmember and another daf truck. I will tell all about in an other tread.

now to get them going again. the first to get finished is the torpedo truck and trailer.
I had figured a way to make the rear fenders. ofcourse made uit of cardboard. just when I was happy with them, to take pictures of them. the cat though some hairballs allover it. and the cardboard socked with all the jussy bits. So there was just one thing to do. No not kill the cat. thow out the fenders and start over. the starting over bit will happen in a few days.

That's really impressive! i had no idea cardboard worked that well for building. Those bodies looks great.

It sounds like Cats are bad.

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

just got myselve a rear axle from china. it's just to wide.
the discription stated it would have a diff.
narrowing down an axle I can manage. making a diff. is just out of my leage.
after resieving the axle it appiers to be a locked diff.
after getting it apart it actualy has a diff. after putting it together again. it is not completly locked. but it needs to gain some "play".
also orderd a motor and other driveline parts.
also found someone to make me some tyres for e nice price. this one can get going again.

I've never seen a build from card board before, very nice work there. Good to see you're back to building.
