Haha, well we'll have to see. I don't really like the stock wheels but I do like the chrome.

I have been working on this for an hour or so in the evening the last couple of days. I made some headlight bezels but I did them freehand so they aren't totally identical. It's hard to tell so I will call it good enough. I made my own lenses too but gave up trying to get a domed shape. I'm not in love with having flat, perfetly clear lenses but the size is odd so what's a guy to do. I also added grab handles to the cab. Tonight I started making the rad guard. I used sheet copper and made up my own angle pieces and then milled them all to the same size. I've never soldered this type of stuff before but it went OK. I wish I had a smaller torch though...

Thanks a lot Brian.

Working with this small stuff is SO much easier using copper rather than aluminum:eek:! It still takes some patience but solder is way more forgiving. Anyway, I was in the shop at 6:30am today so that I could work on this before I started on customer stuff. I think the guard turned out looking good and I am looking forward to using the copper sheet again when I do the shutters.:D

Thanks very much guys. I think it would be pretty boring watching me work... Unless you like colorful language!

I couldn't resist taking these shots before this box got packaged up. I still don't know what direction I am heading with this truck but this does look pretty fine!

Nothing wrong with another dump truck.:D
I like the water tank in the dump box idea. A detachable tailgate, drop in water tank self contained with pump and spray jets. Just drop in, plug in and play.:)
And better yet, if you build a pond in the compound, you could draw water into the tank RC style! :D

All kidding aside, that truck would look great as a dump truck but I can see this becoming the 1/14th scale version in honour of your 850 complete with a scratch reg built lowboy behind it.:D. Or maybe a end dump trailer?

Hey reg, if you want to bend the light lenses, if they are plastic,,, find or make a dome, ball bearing, ect the shape you want, metal, glass, marble, something that will take heat, put them in the oven for a bit. Place them in cold oven take up to temp until they lay down. Doesn't matter how fast the cool just how fast they heat up, sometimes plastics boil, internal air bubbles if heated too fast. I've made a few contoured windshields that way. Usually using acrilic or plexi, but plastics heat form easily.

Yes it almost seems like a dump truck would be the most practical but I already have three. I really like building them though and they are all a little different looking:thinking: I don't think an end dump trailer would be much good given the steepness of the terrain on my roads but I did kinda wanna keep the one I built for Alex and I could build a water tanker as well if I keep a fifth wheel on the truck. Too many options....

Thanks RW, I will have to try that. I made a piece of aluminum with the curve I wanted but using a heat gun just curled the edges even when heating it inside a tube. After trying that I just gave up for now. I was thinking about the oven but was worried about it stinking up the house. I guess I should have taken that lightly used toaster oven I was offered a month ago and put it in my shop....

I checked out their catalog Dan. Wow! What a ton of stuff. I didn't find what I was looking for but I did find a bunch of stuff I didn't know I needed.lol Kinda like shopping at Costco. You go with a list but come out with $200 worth of different stuff.haha!

I spent more hours of the day today working on my shutters than I'd like to admit. What a pain and they aren't even done yet! Oh well, at least they are in their positions. Now just to get them working...

I may not paint it for a while. I would like to take to a few shows in raw state. Everyone assumes that all trucks are plastic bodied and I would like them to see that most of mine aren't without having to tell them. It will most likely see paint eventually though as I don't have the energy to polish it after every time I touch it.lol I see old pictures of my KW850 and Hayes HD right before they were stripped down for paint and I always think about how cool they looked raw(especially the 850 since it really was all aluminum). I had a vision for both of those trucks though so they needed to be painted in their "company" colors to be full on tributes. "Scrappy" is just a hoarder's special so it can be whatever I want.:)

Here's a small update. It doesn't look like much has happened but I have spent hours working on the shutters.

http://youtu.be/H2lLCjSkbPE

I wanted to see what the hood would look like polished so I shined up half of it and the rad. It came up pretty quickly with course rouge and I'm sure it would look kinda neat with some effort but I won't be polishing more... I don't think.lol I don't know if there are too many polished aluminum RC trucks out there? Probably for good reason.

Yeah that's right!lol In all seriousness though I was thinking of setting them up so that they open under full throttle but I'm not sure. We have a show coming up in about three weeks so I need to pick a direction and get going on this truck. I would like to have it nearly completed by then but not painted. Look for some updates this week!

Ok, how's this sound Reg......
Buy me a plane ticket out there, I'll bring all my high tech polishing equipment , set me up in a tent in the compound and I'll make that body look like chrome.....should take 2-3 weeks to finish but it'll be worth it buddy. I promise ;):D

Hey man, if you are looking for an excuse to come out you don't need one. Just get your behind out here. We have a spare bedroom so you won't need a tent. No smoking in the house though....

I worked on the truck most of the day today but haven't taken any pictures yet. Hopefully I can finish up what I'm doing tomorrow and then show you guys some decent progress.

Re: Hoarder Special!

Thanks guys. I guess I have thrown the scale look completely out the window now. I have never really built a "custom" truck before as everything else has been modeled after a particular machine. This is turning in a different direction than I had originally intended as it was going to be a stock looking old truck. Not complaining though as I think it looks decent and will be fairly unique when finished. I made air tanks, battery box, steps and started on the air cleaner today. Fuel tanks will be next I guess when time permits.

Let me know what you all think...

i personaly think this is exactly how they should have built the old school trucks, looks awesom and some mad metal work skills.
but it definatly needs the old school paint job.

cheers andy

RCP57 06-29-2015 10:03 AM

Re: Hoarder Special!

Thanks Andy. I had originally planned to paint it but now I am thinking it will be left raw to show off the metal body. I plan to polish all of the smaller parts but I haven't decided what finish to give the body. I am thinking polished is too much maintenance so maybe brushed finish? We'll see. I like the contrast of the copper and aluminum together. I just need to figure out what metal to use and where.lol

I agree 100% Reg. The copper and aluminum work really well together and looks wicked! But what are you gonna do about the scars in the cab roof?

Thanks Mario. I blame you again! Are you referring to the JB weld or the actual weld in the center? I really wish I had thought about leaving it raw before I put the JB weld on. I thought I was being smart by using the leftover goop from another project as body filler on this. Now I am kicking my A$$ for doing it. I will sand it off I guess but it doesn't come off easy.

Oh, and are you suggesting that I put a driven front axle in this? The thought had crossed my mind but I don't want to spend the money for an axle.lol

Re: Hoarder Special!

Always a big fan of your ally work Reg! I think you've got a great eye for the detail and then using wafer thin ally (and copper!) to catch the look with such a good fettle and finish is very skillful..... top work in my book (again)
