Re: The Daycab
Really? I hope I'm doing it right! Oh, and those smaller pieces are just to hold it up, maybe that's why it looks funny?
Ok, I saw Forza, I had it on the old Xbox. I heard MW2 was better than Black Ops, but those are pretty much THE games.:D |
Re: The Daycab
yea, i thought they were glued there lol. Make shure you are using a square and or ruler (metal) when you are cutting.
They bolth have their strong points, mw2 has better detailing/graphics but black ops has better small maps (mw2 maps are all big) than mw2. |

Re: The Daycab
Here's an update:
Cut down the size of the panel braces with a dremel, to make room for the piece holding the rear panel together. What are my options for filling that gap? Thanks guys!:D |
Re: The Daycab
cut a strip of styrene that is the right width, then make a backer plate for the back of the whole part to stiffen it up
|
Re: The Daycab
This is looking good so far. The best thing when I cut pieces off of a cab that I have found to use is upholstery thread. It is very strong and will cut right through the pieces and you can work it right where you want it.

Re: The Daycab
Thanks guys! Should I use some filler with it? I know you're all about the filler Arioch.:D If so, what kind should I use?
Thanks for the video Matt, I would never have expected that!:D And, I guess for a less tight fit, I sand the edges right? More to come soon, the weekend if not sooner. |
Re: The Daycab
trucker , do what R/M said and take your time on the joints ;) a good joint will not need much filler if any .

Re: The Daycab
I use automotive Fiberglass filler. The kind that has fiberglass woven in it. After I knock that down, I use some glazing putty and then finish it off with some of the squadron white stuff. I am pleased with how well my Coronado is turning out and I used these three types of filler for it.

Re: The Daycab
Matt be careful with that squadron putty, the stuff really is crap. It shrinks and cracks, Not good stuff.
Just a hint. ~Mike~ |

Re: The Daycab
Squad puddy/Real Bondo or Bondo Glaze puddy/Tamiya puddy ALL 100% junk you will not be happy in a year or 2 when it shrinks and all you body work shows. Treat it like a real car fill that strip in with a strip of plastic sand it down then use Evercoat metal glaze puddy 'don't let the name throw you" or Evercoats all purpose glaze this stuff will never shrink it is made not to and is made to handle bitter cold and extrem hot.
Remember if it say Bondo in its name keeeeeeeep walking.. |

I really appreciate the suggestions guys!:D I'm excited to finish it!:D Well, here's an update! Cut out a piece of styrene, and used some of that glue to melt the plastic pieces together!:D http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000054.jpg I picked a piece with a rivet that matches the others. http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000055.jpg A few holes here and there, but that's what the putties for right?:D http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000056.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000057.jpg That's it for now! Thanks for following this build guys!:D Oh, and IT SNOWED HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 76 YEARS!!! More to come soon!:D Catch ya on the flip side. |
Re: The Daycab
You can also fill the holes with plastic. Cut thin slices, insert them, use your MEK to melt, harden, cut off excess, sand, then glaze and sand. :) And yes evercoat is an automotive filler.
|
Re: The Daycab
I haven't had any problems with the Squadron. But then again I use it to fill minor scratches and other imperfections. I mainly use my fiberstrand for the big stuff and then the glazing putty.
Truck is looking good, let me know how you make out with the Squadron. (Maybe I should reword that, I can see the comments now). |
Re: The Daycab
Dont forget to make a backer plate for that
|
Re: The Daycab
Very nice job filling in that strip that is the way to do it.. If you treat these body like a car you will get great results for sure..
|
Re: The Daycab
You are doing fine just take your time don't rush it and you will be happy with the results.

Looking good trucker keep up the good work...

Re: The Daycab
Thanks guys, much appreciated!:D I filled in the gaps with the styrene, and I'm letting them dry. As for the putty, the owner of my LHS says Squadron does shrink and crack, and that especially on a truck like this, it's not a good way to go. Since then I filled in the cracks with tiny bits of styrene, and I'm wondering if I should go for another autobody glaze/putty. Winchester Auto recently moved in to my area (went to the grand opening and won bungy cords, a sun screen, and a folding chair :D) and they have a big can of Evercoat along with some other fillers. But for $40, and I'm not going to use it that much... So, they had smaller tubes, but no Evercoat ones. I think I saw like 3M and some other brands, can't remember them. So, are any other ones good? Does it matter as long as it's not Squadron?:D
Thanks for all the tips, suggestions, and pointers guys, it really helps! More to come!:D |
Re: The Daycab
I use the 3M glazing putty I and it works well. I usually wet sand before I paint. This helps minimize scratches.
|
Re: The Daycab
Any putty that is a "One part" putty, meaning you don't have to mix it with a catalyst WILL crack and shrink. The evercoat for $40 will keep forever as long as the cap is on tight, so it will not go to waste, eventually you will find a use for it.
Basically it boils down to this, if you want it done right, and so that in a year or more it still looks the same, then spend the $40 and get the good stuff, if you don't care what it looks like in a short time then go with the cheap stuff. But keep in mind it don't matter who makes it, if it is a one part putty it WILL crack and shrink. ~Mike~ |
Re: The Daycab
yea like mike said :) I had a can of evercoat sitin over 20 years , funny I finally used it up on my 9370 dump build last year . find a auto paint supply , I don't remember it costing that much  then my memory could be asleep yet :p
Steve |
Re: The Daycab
Okay... I think I have it. So, my two courses of action for a non-cracking seal are, blow the $40 on the Evercoat, or use the small tube of cheaper filler. No 1-part fillers, 2-part.
Another question... what are the two parts? Thanks for the info!:D |
Re: The Daycab
One of them is the filler itself and the 2nd part is the hardener. Just have to make sure you mix it correctly. I have about 10 years of auto body experience and it seems to be a science to mixing this stuff.
|
Re: The Daycab
is this a help :p:D
http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/PIC_0957.jpg little tube is the cream hardener the big tube is the filler/glaze . now I only use 1 little tube / quart of filler / glaze . to much hardener in the mix will make it brittle . |
Re: The Daycab
Also, you mix in too much hardener and then it sets up really quick as well as being brittle.

YA NO CRAP.... A science is an understatement, I think I wasted more at first than I used trying to get it right.:eek: |
Re: The Daycab
So, filled in the big gaps, and I'm debating on what to do for filler...
BEFORE http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000056.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000057.jpg AFTER http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000069.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000074.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/P1000071.jpg Thanks guys!:D |
Re: The Daycab
So, I think I'll go with the 3M (or similar) glazing putty, and a hardener. Does any hardener work with any putty, or do I have to buy a set? Thanks for all the help guys! :D
|
Re: The Daycab
i ise the easy red glazing putty you can get at walmart 3m stuff in the automotive section no mixing involved to it and it is easy to sand too
|
Re: The Daycab
Does it last? I've heard from everyone that one-part putties crack and shrink.
|
Re: The Daycab
It dont last...Know from experience...plus takes hours to fully dry to sand it...The two part is the way to go....Paul set me straight on that...:D:D
|
Re: The Daycab
Trucker, you can get evercoat on the bay for bout 30 bucks and you will have enough for practice and future builds. :)
