Looking good Ken. Makes me want to find some time to work on my crane.

All done so far.

Just added graded steps and bumper with block hook.

Still have to do some paint touch-up.

Is that bolt hollow?
Are you not transmitting any lines between top and bottom?

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

Hi JensR, No wires going threw.

Chassis is powered and the Crane is powered.

Tried all ways, then found this.

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

Okay, that works, too.
Do you use an FM radio?
For 2.4GHz, you will have to make sure that you can bind to two receivers at the same time (don't think this works) or switch models (computer transmitter) between chassis and crane (probably better).

EDIT:
Have to correct myself:
http://www.helireviews.com/fly-sky-f...h-transmitter/
Unless your 2.4 GHz transmitter behaves differently, this means that the transmitter will always send the same code and so different receivers (chassis and crane) will all listen to the same signals. You could still have signals 1-3 in the chassis and 4-7 (or so) in the crane. Hope this makes sense.

As to your design:

I do not see how you fix the gear to the chassis.

How is the bearing held in position?

I do not see how you deal with the axial loads.
The axial bearing should have a large diameter to create a stable platform.

What is the flange bearing in your drawing? The large plate?
I don't understand.

Cheers
Jens

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

Hi Jensr, OK the flange bearing has 2 bolts to bolt to chassis. (see drawing)
from under the chassis, with 3/4 sticking threw the crane deck which turns.
Gear will be screwed around bearing, on the chassis and motor with pinion gear to swing crane.

I think the bearing will work OK, with counter weight.

So what radio should I get. 6CH should work.

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

I saw the drawing - I don't understand it.
Are the parts labelled be(a)ring and the one labelled flange be(a)ring one and the same?
If so, this would theoretically work, but you need to be sure that the upper part interacts with the inner ring of the bearing and this will mean that your base for stability has a very small diameter. Not good.
Also, I do not know of any flange bearing with a flange that much larger than the bearing itself.

If however, these two parts are really two parts, I really don't know what we see here.

Which radio? Depends on what you want to control. 6 channels could be not enough if you want to control the outriggers in certain ways.
I'd recommend the Turnigy 9x v2, which is a 7.5 channel radio.
1 drive forward/reverse
2 steer left/right
3 boom angle
4 hook up/down
5 rotate left/right
6 outriggers out/in
7 outriggers down/up
half channel: driving light/working light

Here is Bearing
top piece plate removed. Bottom plate bolted to chassis bottom to hold
Only the gray piece will be sticking thought so crane deck can be bolted to bearing.

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

Ah, cool. Yup, that should be much better than what I thought:
I have never seen one of these units with such a thin flange, only units with massive cast iron housing or tiny bearings where the outer ring has a flange/lip on it.

Pretty neat, will have to remember these

Those Flanged bearings will take up too much room. I forget what Tom used on his Marion shovel.
Look these over for some ideas.

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

I don't really think anymore that the ones Ken found are too bulky. The lower part will sit flush in the chassis and the upper needs to bridge the thickness of the gear and then the crane needs to be attached to it. If anything, that hollow shaft of the bearing unit might not be long enough...

A very simple and compact thrust bearing is a plastic disc with many 4mm holes drilled in a circle. Put bearing balls into the holes and trap everything between two planar disks of sheet metal. Does not provide radial location of the shaft, but a huge support base axially.

Comment on your Radio for your crane. I am dealing with simulary application with my Crane Build, (Potain Crane Build). I am using a 8 Channel radio with 2 Receivers. I use one channel ( a toggle switch) to electronicly switch between one or the other set of funcition. Each receiver will read the signals but if the servos or motor are not powered, nothing happens.

More up date.
Received my (2) 1000 RPM motors from China today.
Also had to make my hubs, as no one had any for 4mm shaft,(that I could find).

So will see how they work as soon as I find some way to mount then to Truck.
Any input welcome. Did see some on line, look like a block with hole for motor.

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

Do you mean 100rpm by any chance?
The hubs look good!
Brass tube with brass collar? Collar drilled and tapped?

Attaching motors:
press into plastic tube
glue into other tube
screw into mounting holed on front surface of motor, angled metal plate
use hose clamps to secure motor on metal/plastic profile
...
?

JensR, Set Screw.

Thank you for the input, on mounting.

Two Motors for $14.98 shipped, they are 1000 RPM's.

They test fun good on 4-AA.

Will see how it goes. LOL

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

Looks good!
So you make "only" the front axle steering?
Sorry to repeat myself, but I am slightly concerned about the motor being billed as "1000rpm". That sounds quite high and I would have expected (as I said earlier) 100rpm to be more realistic - but if you have done the tests and it works, that's great!

Also, what scale is this?
The first post says 1:25, but this looks bigger?

Cheers
Jens

Well, maybe 100.
Rear drive only.
Will be 1/14 scale. Used info from member to find size.

Thank you for looking.

That crane is going to be fast ;)

Yep..... Will need power when Crane is mounted.

JensR 06-24-2011 07:03 PM

Re: Liebherr LTM 1030-2

Power is proportional to speed times force.
So, for a given power: If it is fast, then it is weak.
I'm a bit worried that you indeed might have the 1000rpm motors, in which case you won't be happy, I fear.
