Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Sorry if I missed it from earlier, but what is the function of the elongated plates on the pins?

Looks very nice!
Mount it to your workbench and use it as your shop crane! :) |

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
First extension done :)
I also made two lifting eyes https://i.postimg.cc/YSH6nY0m/IMG-1463.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/RFPwZYRc/IMG-1460.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/hG19HvQZ/IMG-1459.jpg |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Second extension done :)
Everything just tack welded. I will made all the extensions, and if all looks fine, I'll weld them completely. https://i.postimg.cc/1X7WWPfY/IMG-1506.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Wz1W6tbk/IMG-1504.jpg |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
I've been drawing the extension boom and I got most of the main parts drawn.
I know it's going to be challenging to route all the hydraulic lines to the cylinders  https://i.postimg.cc/C5hzQWz3/boom-wt-cyl.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/SspXWXqN/Tele1-v41.jpg |

Hi Ari, Actually it is these plates I was wondering about: https://i.postimg.cc/QtXNqw4v/Image6.jpg The normal round ones would act as bushings/bearings, I think, but I dont understand why some of them are oblong with that extra bolt in them. |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Hey Hemi,
Build is top quality as usual! I assume you are using a TIG to weld? If so what thickness is the steel and how many amps are you running?I just picked up a TIG and have lots to learn! |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
It all comes to that where they like the movement to happen. If the cylinder mounting pin is fixed to the boom, there's a bushing in cylinder where the rotation happens. With those freely floating pins, I guess there's bushings in all of the joints.

The Tig welder I have is this one, but an older modell : https://www.schweisstechnik-lampert....el-making/m280 It does not show the actual amps, just a percent value, so no idea :) |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
I studied how they arrange the oil delivery to the extension cylinders on the full size crane, and I realized they come up with a clever solution.
The oil is run trough the piston rod to the next cylinder. There's apparently two holes running all the way inside the rod from each side of the piston and out of the the top of the rod. If you look closely at this picture you'll see what I mean. There's no rubber hoses, just hard lines. Unfortunately that's not possible to accomplish in this scale, the rod is only 4 mm thick and over 150 mm long. It would have made everything so much tidier:( https://i.postimg.cc/L8mN6krp/HIAB-X...-64183-tif.jpg |

Some progress with the crane :)

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
As usual, a most astounding display of craftsmanship! Your welding machine certainly makes putting the pieces together easier and neat. Awesome!

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
I got the parts for the extension cylinders done. The o-ring grooves on the cap for the piston rod sealing were quite difficult to machine as the hole diameter is only 4 mm. My grooving tools minimum hole size was 4,1 mm, so I had to do some grinding to get it fit.
I also got the rest of the cylinder brackets machined. https://i.postimg.cc/yd9DCsCT/Jatkosylinteri_2_v20.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/FFZBhmKG/IMG_1708.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/zXGPBMbN/IMG_1707.jpg |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Great detail and precision!

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
I'm loving this project! You are an excellent machinist to make precision parts that small & still be accurate enough to make them function properly!
|
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Beautiful machining, that's coming along great! Touch them with a deburring tool and those cylinder parts are like jewlery.
Any luck on finding the sliding teflon tape, or does it look smooth enough you might not want some? Post 49, i think the oval bushing plates on the real ones are set up to be either pin-retainers or anti-rotation locks. They usually do step cuts and different sized bushing holes if it's retaining. If it's rotation there's some offset between holes and pin diamater so it clocks the pin in the bore to slow down wear. |

Yes, I got two different thicknesses of teflon tape. |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Not to hijack your thread but where did you find Teflon tape.??? I've tried googling it to no avail..
I follow these threads and Frizzen is right the work you do is incredible..... |

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Got it thank you .!!! I was looking for Teflon tape and got all kind of weird hits....didn't think about PTFE...We used it in the military years ago to insulate lighthouse tubes(I know old technology ) ...wanted to put it inside my screw drives....
|
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Glad you found a source for some tape, otherwise i was going to have to ask how much you needed and hope shipping to finland wasn't too crazy.
Keep up the killer work! |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Here's a picture of how I placed the ptfe tape (those brown pads on the brass angles).
The second picture is just a closeup of the welds. https://i.postimg.cc/YC9CyZbR/IMG-1779.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/KvQYfxr4/IMG-1784.jpg |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
I have continued welding parts permanently together, there's still lots of seams to weld:eek:

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Wow, you are doing very well with your Lampert welder. I picked up an Orion welder last year. No time for the models but fixed some of my wife's cheap thin steel lawn ornaments.

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Welds are looking perfect :D

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Amazing work Hemi!
How will you sequence the hydraulics to extend in the correct order? Will you make a series of sequencing valves? |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane

The plumbing is going to be difficult enough already in this way:) |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
If it does decide it needs help to sequence the segments correctly, you could probably make it work some little plates with a 'metered orifice' installed at hose connections, or making a 'calibrated crimp' in a hard line.
That's some pretty micro welding. I wish i were that good at full size. |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
I got rest of the cylinder brackets welded in place :)

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
I test fitted the crane to my old Tamiya based dump truck to see how it fits :)
One thing for sure, it's going to need some serious support legs to keep the truck upright:eek: https://i.postimg.cc/wjrvkC8Z/IMG-1937.jpg |
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
@Hemi1966 Fit it to that truck just remove the dump body and put a flatbed body on it
|
Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
:jaw:Put that on that just remove the dump body and put a flatbed on it

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Work of art, impressive!! :jaw::jaw:

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
Work of art indeed. Looking forward to the day we can see a very long video of it working.

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane
I've been machining some smaller parts for the extension cylinders. (The squares on the paper are 5x5 mm.)
