yea I learned that the hard way

I'm thinking of leaving the tracks wide instead of cutting the 1/2" off to bring to scale width . Kinda looks like a wide track . I'm going with the single motor drive , just to see if it is possible in RC . I got pretty much figured out , just the time and parts

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/PIC_0635.jpg

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/PIC_0638.jpg

and a quick peek of this

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/PIC_0641.jpg

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/PIC_0642.jpg

I still have to machine the shaft and bolt together to test flow and pressure . only non calculated variable is the motor ( not sure if it has what I need ) but we'll see  this is just a trial to see if I can make a pump from the scrap pile :o

I'm glad your going with one motor and steering clutches, you can be the guinea pig to see if works.lol Any more progress on the pump?

yes I actually put it together and tried it , have some seal reworking to do . It leaked between pump and motor :( . Yes ,I'll be the guinea pig on this 1 ,and will not give up till it works :D . need less to say nothing will be running anytime soon :( , lot of small parts to make . I need to get some chunks of aluminum to make 4 trannies for the scrapers , 2 reversers for this , valves , and pumps . if the vain is a no go then back to the gears  .

ihbuilder 11-14-2010 09:22 PM

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

well I got my pump working :) still got to get a shaft seal , A quad ring just not going to cut it :( ( should've known better :o ) . now on to the next unaffordable part :( valves . I think I'm going to wear this taig mill out with these 3 machines

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

Nice work on the pump - a vane pump you say. Wow, nice work. Would a press fit bronze SAE863 collar on the shaft help seal it? Are you planning to make the valves? If so, are you going to do a closed or open hydraulic system?

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

Nice progress Steve. Pump looks good!

Those HD brand servos I told you about on the phone don't like to sit for a long time under load, they have so much holding strength that they burn up from heat. So, they probably would be good to move/hold valves.

I'm might try something off the shelf first . not sure yet on open or closed . as for seal , I just used what I had laying around to try it out .

thanks Scott , any servo holding a load for a long period of time is not good for it , I would think . I'll cross that 1 when I can get to it .

only a little , Joe , welded up 1 track frame tonight had to get 68 steel wheels to the powder coater now got to finish the hubs for them and the next batch . my rollers will be hard ( cummins cam followers :p ) ? for you did you use bearings in yours or just a brass bushing ? I was thinking sealed bearings but may go with oil lite bushings and looks like the $ is keeping me on the make it my self path for awhile . got the shaft seal for the pump just didn't get it in yet .

Jerry , I think that may have been TD9Clyde

the rollers took yesterday + an hr this morn only because of using a bent steering shaft for the stock could only do a little at a time . the front idler rings took some time as that steel was some hard stuff had to rotate my carbide on some of my cutters . took a good couple min. to cut 1 off the stock . now I got to make 2 centers and 4 plates and weld together .

thanks Travis , I may take tomorrow yet to finish the front idlers then back to finishing this batch of wheels and getting the next started . from the way it sounds , It may not slow down :D .

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

The track frames and rollers are the most time consuming things on building a dozer, the rest it goes fast.

td9clyde 11-27-2010 02:38 PM

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

I use solid for the idlers just for the extra front end weight unless they are spoked then i might mill them out the idlers on my terex and the D 7 are 3 inch solid by 1 inch thickgood and heavy to hold the blades and front ends down

ihbuilder 11-27-2010 03:04 PM

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

well I guess I'm screwing this 1 up already :p LOL , not . Henry I'm using what I got laying around , if I need more weight thats another place to put lead ;)

td9clyde 11-27-2010 04:23 PM

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

nah i was just tryin to be helpful :p :) I don't blame you a bit i use what i have too and i wined up buy metal alot too it's never ending til you have things built then it's back to running around finding stuff again to me thats half the fun

ihbuilder 11-27-2010 05:30 PM

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

Henry , they say dumpster diving runs in my family :p . For hollow idlers they got some weight . the idlers are 4.25 dia . Here's some pics with some measuring tools to show size . The tractor will be 20" long once I get the track frames and finals in place and 13" to top of cab w/out ac unit which will be another .875"

hows progress comming along i know you don't sleep lol so i know your up to something what ever your up to i bet it looks good

9W Monighan 12-01-2010 09:07 AM

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

I just noticed that the tracks are concave where the idlers and rollers run. That's going to make the dozer ride up and down. You're going to have to machine the links flat.

ihbuilder 12-01-2010 10:23 AM

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

Steve , they are a little but not like std roller chain . If the bounce is to bad , then I'll have to do some abrasive machining

Clyde , give me a couple weeks . Making 18 rollers is not bad but when you have 100+ of something

Steve its coming along nicley looks as though its gona have some weight to it as well...you have some strong motors picked out for it?

ihbuilder 12-04-2010 06:18 PM

Re: dresser TD40B dozer

Lou , I was going to go with 1 24V dewalt 2 speed drill motor with steering brakes and clutches BUT for the modeling and an electric motor , seems to be nonefficant . so It will be 2 milwaukee 2 speed drill motors . For some reason cat has 2 electric drive motors in the new D7E  This will be close to the size of joe's D9R

Henry , It's getting time to get someone to run all those parts for me . It ties me up I can't get to other things . :(

Hey Steve, 2 speed motor's will make it operate just like the full size version, with planetary steering. I had a chance to sit in the TD 40 that was at ConExpo/ConAg 2 year's ago, Big! My neighbor has a TD 25B, I get to push the dumpsite with it once in a while. 82,000 lbs of enjoyment. I just joined the forum, and am learning alot from all of you! Later, Neil#? aka doodlebug.
