Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
I did a little test on a spare piece using some the rust oleum blue i had. The finish of course came out really dull. So I hit it with some rustoleum clear. And this is the end result.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...288dc70af4.jpg Forgot about painting the filler cap, so took care of that. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...62e78fab30.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...3a6864d793.jpg It was about at this point i realized that theres a pretty serious problem with the paint. Its not sticking to the factory primer for shite.... Its chipping off really easy. So now I have tons of time and money into a **** paint job. Hooray! http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...66ca72acc3.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...e02ee9ecf4.jpg Ran across a misaligned hole for one of the door hinges. Decided to drill it out and use a nut on the back side. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...e79be6d3c6.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...7d65694dee.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...e0fab6ac2d.jpg Heres how the roll bars looked out of the box http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...8a3274ea30.jpg And after some careful bending. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...bcb2129099.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...c3ee946235.jpg Roll bars in. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...a5e37a4ba1.jpg Inner fenders. They are thin vacu formed styrene with felt applied on one side. Kind of a neat idea. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...b5c8cc8786.jpg Cut to shape and installed. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...b7c3a7bbee.jpg Rear door hinges. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...a8deb5544f.jpg Rear door installed temporary till i get the paint sorted out. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...c8527cf74f.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...5f079eae43.jpg Front door pillars. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...480c7c09f8.jpg Pillars installed to dash and firewall. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06...2c82358e4f.jpg Shot of how it all goes together. Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Seems like a nice kit with some major flaws. But in all looks like it is a great base kit to make it just right. Just think - if it were perfect out of the box then you would already be bored of it.

Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Bloody shame about the paint chipping of so readily.
For the rest starting to look like you're almost finished apart from sorting out the electrics. Where is the ESC, receiver etc. supposed to go in this model? |

Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
I think i have the paint issue sorted out. Picked up some duplicolor etching primer and some blue that is pretty close to the tamiya blue. With the exception that its metal flake. Primer seems to be sticking pretty good. I primed and painted a test panel so we'll see after its cured. Wont be much for updates anytime soon as I have a lot of stripping and painting to do. Im also working out the details on LEDs and a controller. At least theres some light at the end of the tunnel.

Getting close to any updates? Looking forward to seeing the wiring portion.

Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Finally back at this. So after some monotonous scrubbing with lacquer thinner using rags and q-tips, Ive managed to strip a handful of the body panels.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...dc2ed011e8.jpg And re prime and paint/clear a few. I'm using duplicolor etching primer paint, and clear coat. I like the new color better. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...88f3c4492e.jpg Ken sent me the Capo chassis mounted servo bracket, so I've decided to ditch the cable set up. This set up works so much better. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...867d4a563a.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...ef437e0024.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...ee84348463.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...f7410b7eda.jpg After thinking about battery placement. I noticed some slots in the floor that appear to be for velcro battery straps. I'm guessing this is where Capo intended the battery to go. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...9be7b73b1e.jpg The only 3s battery I have just barely fits between the wheel wells. I need to conceal it somehow. Was thinking maybe building a subwoofer box or something along those lines. I'm open to ideas here. I thought maybe a cooler but that would be a big *** cooler lol. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...41e015655d.jpg |

Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Hi Prop, happy to see you are at it again! New paint is looking good :)
That servo makes way more sense than the cable set up too. Did you get that broken cowl piece sorted out? Stephan |

I think Capo may have realized they over engineered the cable steering set up. Its just not strong enough. Probably why Ken sent me the chassis mounted bracket for free. Ken ended up sending me two replacement cowl peices, the first got bent just as bad as the first one, most likely during shipping. The second time he shipped it in a box. It was slightly bent, but not enough to where i couldnt massage it back into shape. All is good now! |
Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Glad to hear it all got sorted out and you got your replacement parts.
Keep posting the pictures :) |
Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Did some interior work on the jeep today. Steering wheel servo.

Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Small update today. I spent most of my available time today getting more paint laid down.
Started by filling some casting marks on the rear gate. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...403589a217.jpg Then made a panel out of styrene to match the 1:1 http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...dc8c86a4a1.jpg Covers up some of the screw holes nicely http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...0a89c410a3.jpg Then I had to do a repair job on the radiator. The mounting brackets are super weak and kind of crumbled away. I tried repairing them with some tenax but they just werent strong enough. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c048fbf688.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...69f7b28025.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...436ea52592.jpg Down to the hood and doors left for paint. Its taking alot of time as each panel is getting 9 to 10 coats between primer, paint and clear coat! http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b47c7bdd89.jpg |
Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Nice fix on the radiator!
8-9 layers of paint! You have a lot more patience than I do! Like your LED set-up on the dash too! Guess you wire them into the headlights? |
Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Worst part is I hate painting.... Its coming out well though so im happy.
The Lighting setup on this is actually pretty complicated. The dash lights will operate with parking lights. This is going to have all the lights the 1:1 has and they will operate accordingly. Im even trying to figure out how to put a switch in the dash for a dome light....just need to figure something out. |
Re: Capo 1:8 Jeep CD15823
Havent done anymore spraying yet but, Ive decided to paint the fender flares body color. Started to mask them off.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...8dad258cb0.jpg Something not included in the kit are spark plug wires. They give you these nifty spark plug type things that secure the valve covers on, but no wires for them like Ive seen in some online pics. So.... Figured Id whip some up. Started by drilling some 1/8"x1/8" styrene. I chose the proper size drill bit to allow these to friction fit onto the spark plugs, which is needed because they need to be removed in order to disassemble the motor. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a0cf0e5a82.jpg Then I drilled for some small elastic type stuff I had laying around. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...1fbafca699.jpg Chucked the stock in my drill to round off the squareness. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...09e70d88ae.jpg Used some styrene tubing and a file to contour the end to fit against the first piece. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...569b9950ea.jpg Cut it to length, and slid it over the wire material. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d2f2e21370.jpg Then insert wire into first piece with super glue. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...421c747615.jpg Let super glue set up. Then tenax the styrene pieces together. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...de1869097b.jpg Make styrene dust. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...3122d5ae77.jpg The finished plugs, glued into their respective holders provided by Capo. I realize this isnt exactly scale... the plug wires seem to come out of the engine block, but when everything is assembled, it wont be very noticeable. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d53f4c23f3.jpg One of the few things Capo did not make for this kit, is an exhaust system. Its really been bugging me and I feel like it should have one. It doesnt make much sense to me to go all out and leave something like this out. So I pulled some parts from a 1:8 static model kit I have, and will be using them to build an exhaust for this. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...6a8c2c9769.jpg Again, these need to be removable in order to loosen the servo screws so that the engine can be disassembled. So I drilled and tapped for some some scale hardware that will accomplish that. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d966adc1f2.jpg The finished engine with plug wires and exhaust manifolds. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a146ae5c03.jpg |
