Izzy, You know I had to bust you on something :rolleyes: Your approach on this build is way past anything that I have done. Mine seems to be- measure, make long, trim, trim, and finally get it correct. Most of your parts fit the first time and work.

Can't wait to see this vehicle finished and working.

Re: More than just a thought ...

First time. That support took at least 4 tries and 2 different material tries. First was a 2" wide 3/16 alum from lowes. Put it in the vise and pulled it over . Got all the way to the last bend and it fractured through. Great for a pinch flange horrible for forming....
then thought about brass. But didn't have anything long enough. Then tried this 1 x 1/8 also from lowes and it did great! But then had to make 3 just to get the blank versus finished item right. Alum is tricky stuff to figure a bend allowance and heck forming in a metal vise and pulling it over by hand isn't science either. So a good drawing would do me No good on this one. This is where I rely on my farm boy upbringing And back yard engineering

Re: More than just a thought ...

Lol, that's been my approach to a lot of stuff, cut, recut, bend, break, cut, break, ect,,,,, even did some backside cuts and it always is the very last bend on a part that is coming out perfect that the aluminum breaks!! Thanks for sharing , it's looking real good!!

Ok you said roller by Indy. Now that it's a roller, I expect to see it done....

Re: More than just a thought ...

Well good friend we're getting close. Been sick mostly last 2 weeks but still working so slow progress. Took most this week off to recover and get some chores done round the house which means .... late nights playing rc stuff.

Did in fact have a conversation with T today about my progress , about how this was to take a good 6 months to have it half way done For Indy.....
Add 2hr for Monday, 4 hr for Tuesday, 2 for Wednesday, 8 for Thursday and another 4 for this morning.
So 20 hr added and what do you get?

TEST RUN!

Re: More than just a thought ...

Chassis looks GREAT!! Speed of the arms and supports looks spot on. Really has a nice turning radius for as long as it is. Hopefully you will have the crane operational by August!! Maybe even the body done and painted :eek:

Quite a difference from the last time I saw it! Never did ask- sound system????

Got a plan. Not a great one, but a plan.

Re: More than just a thought ...

Didn't like how fast it was running on the test run. So i added an Integy gear reduction. Used an aftermarket pinion so rather than the kit ones.

Now it has
Axial 55 turn crawler motor
2.5:1 Integy gear reduction
16:1 RC4WD planetary
1.47:1 RC4WD transfer case
TLT axels
1.9 RC4WD rims
Militants tires 4-1/4" tall

Last several days was wiring. Installing and micro switches on the retracts. And making a power board for the 4 motor controllers ( 3 of them are dual)

Your cooking right along Izzy. Looks like you'll have a crane in Indy. I agree with Lynn the turning radius is great.

Re: More than just a thought ...

Found that on carpet the drive really bogs down. The ratio of the inner set of axels is far different than the outer axel sets. But soft tires on deep shag carpet is not good either.

This thing is a beast Izzy!!! Really cool build dude! Can't wait to see it in person!

Thanks Alex.

Last week I mounted the main deck plate. And started laying out the turntable design wise.
on Saturday I mounted the drive on the turntable. Then into Sunday I got it mounted into the frame.

Today I picked up laser cut cab parts from the local cnc wood working shop. They have a low power laser for wood and glass etching.

This is coming along very nicely! Is that a rotary table your using for the swing?

Yes.

Great idea!

tc1cat 04-14-2015 09:59 AM

Re: More than just a thought ...

That little detail didn't get past me either :D:D Might be where your tire squat is coming from?? Rotary table can't be too light! Might need some tire filling to combat the squatting.

Izzy 04-14-2015 06:38 PM

Re: More than just a thought ...

I figure that table is around 10 to 15 lbs.
But the full length 3/16 plate easn't light either.

I am honored by the comments but the turn table was an idea by a good friend here on the board.

Like everyone else I gather ideas talk with friends ask questions and then go build something....

Re: More than just a thought ...

It is an excellent idea, but when I was told about the turntables all I could picture was the one we have at work that takes a couple guys or a fork lift to get it on the mill lol. I've never seen one that small.

Hmmmm.... Those hinges look familiar for some reason. ;) :p

Izzy 04-25-2015 08:14 PM

Re: More than just a thought ...

Ok so this version did not work out. Tried 2 different mounting with no improvement. Turns out my pivot is too far away from the door surface. So a new design and more printing to be done.
I broke rule 1 of design. Test your design. I was so anxious to make hinges I didn't properly test in my design models.

GjtBob 04-25-2015 09:57 PM

Re: More than just a thought ...

I'm no designer by any means, but what do you think about a "simple" Piano Hinge for the doors? I've seen a few 1:1's with those type of hinges on the doors. You might need to make cut outs for them, but I'm thinking they'd work, and should look ok as well.

Chris, what an awesome project you have here. Its is over the top for sure.I feel your pain on the hindge issue, I spent a whole day on a hindge for the tilt hood on one of my trucks. Good grief.Ok back to work.Good job,

Re: More than just a thought ...

Guys thanks.

Piano hinge - yes I have a few lingering about. Have used them a lot. Was trying for the hidden look aND something nice tHan what i typically produce. I have the piano as a fall back punt option if all else fails.

I understand the wanting a hidden look, I'm sure, from what I've seen of your work, that you'll figure something masterful out. The rig looks awesome so far, I can only dream of having that one of talent.

Izzy 04-29-2015 09:10 PM

Re: More than just a thought ...

Much is just figuring it as I go. Like I must have my ratio off for the cab height. As you see the dash looks right with the windshield but neededva sub floor to get the seat height close and then it's like someone could stand and walk through the cab. In general it's close but not exact. The interior was a Sunday afternoon thought and a bunch of pieces here and there.

Haven't seen any updates lately, is everything going ok? It looks great so far.
