Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Nate,
Can you counterbore a hole in the brass part so the socket head sits down a bit? I assume that is the look you are not quite satisfied with? Looks like a fun project! Jim |

Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
I have a question if you are into such a detailed model why didn't you use the same lock foe the pins that the real excavators use? Ed

Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Much better!! Sometimes you just have to set back and think about things:D

Moving right along. Edge welding is easy to screw up, looks like I've got the machine setup correct!

Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
To answer you about a picture I did not get one but I called the local Deere equipment dealer and they said that there is just a strap over the end of the pin with a bolt holding the strap on. Ed

Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Nate your welding on that bucket looks great. It takes lots of practice and usually many years to achieve the quality of weld you have there. Will definitely be waiting for the next pics of that bucket.

Started on V2 of the dolly system today:
Nope, not a 4cyl. model engine ;) http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2842/9...0f52f72e_c.jpg Just like the last version, I'm modifying an RCP Crawlers TLT Straight Axle adapter so I can service the outer section easily. This time it will mount cleaner to the frame via screws. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5518/9...c08f0e27_c.jpg The axle housing will mount to the plate with counter-sunk screws and then the plate will bolt to the frame. Probably hex heads to make it look 1:1. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5344/9...7beb3489_c.jpg Bolted up to the wheel http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5540/9...e54892d7_c.jpg Went with 2.2s this time. After looking at the video closer, the 1.9s were too small. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3715/9...2eb504a1_c.jpg Who needs a laser/water jet? Bandsaw, grinder, and file son! (Except for that whole need to make 3 more part :( ) http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2851/9...b2850004_c.jpg |
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
looking good Nate.
|
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Nice machining! Is the frame of the dolly CNC machined or cut with a bandsaw and polished on the edges? What kind of mill do you have?

Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Got the new dollies finished up. I lost track of how much time I have in these. Well over 20-30 hours. The first versions I didn't spend as much time in the preplanning as I did on these. The fit on this pair are **** near perfect and look much better on the excavator with the 2.2 wheels/tires. (Sorry I didn't get more photos of the build process. I'm in Indy rush mode to get everything done before the show)
Milled slots in the bottom of the uprights and dropped in and tig welded the rods in place. Used some plates to keep the uprights spaced correctly while in the vise. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7284/9...a08e1425_b.jpg Next was cutting new inserts for the tires to support the weight of the 850D. This dense foam stacked inside the tire should do the trick. That's a special tool made by Olfa for cutting out lexan body wheel wells. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/9...4882e8e0_b.jpg All the foam cutout it's time to assemble the beadlocks. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7366/9...f79e1e28_b.jpg All assembled and painted up. Wheels will be painted black or grey another time. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7351/9...435e00ec_b.jpg Also got the new buckets welded up and ready for paint tomorrow. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7373/9...f048bb43_b.jpg |
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Wow, those buckets and the dollies turned out beautiful. I'm not a professional welder, but your welds look really good. Nice work.
|
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
The buckets look great...
On the mounts, are they just tacked on? ... Sorry the engineer in me just had to comment. :-) |
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Yup just tacked. I ran out of tig gas so after the photo I went over to the mig to finish it up.
|
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Can you see the tungsten contamination spots? I sure as ____ can!
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5475/9...67396cce_b.jpg Got some inserts made on the lathe too. Still gotta make the other 4. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7381/9...6768af0c_b.jpg |
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Dolly system didn't work. Back to the drawing board. Need to get more weight further back or get the top bar to lock into the cradle better. Front section was dragging on the ground. The tire inserts held the weight just fine though. I suppose this is what happens when you guess on the geometry haha!
On the other hand, the big bucket was awesome for Indy rubber! |
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
The mig welding I've done on my buckets don't look that bad now, eh Nate? :p
|
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
I ran out of tig gas before I got to the mounts so that's all mig in there. I can always grind them down I suppose.
|
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Finally was able to get my stuff out of storage from the fire and tear into this thing. Body was heavily damaged but I've got the new raw body from JDH ready for paint.
Haven't tested the electronics yet but there's no visual damage. Looks like all I'll have to replace is the hydraulic lines from the splitter to the arm cylinders. Those were melted in spots so I'm sure the fluid was cooked pretty good. Anyone know a source on this side of the pond for those lines? I believe they're the 6mm lines but I forgot to measure last night. |

I think yesterday was Farris Bueller's day off.....

Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Gardentrucking.com sells 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm hydraulic tubing for about $2 a foot and RC4WD sells 2.0 mm tubing about 40" long for $17 but I didn't see any 6mm anywhere.
|
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
For reference:
Smaller hydraulic line for the boom/stick/bucket cylinders uses the following: Parker PA 12-PHL DIN 74324 Size is 4mm OD x 2.7mm ID x 0.65mm Thickness |
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
Can't seem to find any retailers state-side that carry the Parker. I found this stuff on Mcmaster Carr today and will report back if it works well:

Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
OHH!!! I can help! I am about to order this
http://www.grainger.com/product/PARK...KR2?s_pp=false for my LR 634, it's close enough to 3mm OD. You might find your size on there. Good luck! |
Re: PFB's Vario JD 850D
That tubing works great and is the same stiffness as what the excavator was supplied with.
