Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

that there looks kinda like a grader blade...

Now that I see your fingers for size comparison, maybe you're going for the old school D8 straight blade look.

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

Not to worry. the blades aren't finished yet! They will not be a carry blade like on my dozer but they won't be a straight blade either.

Kinda like this. http://www.google.ca/url?sa=i&rct=j&...16951949301575

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

A little more progress on the blades today. I'm aiming for the look of a D6 with these so no more carry blades. This style will cut a lot better too with such a light machine.

Thanks a lot Barker. All I can say is practice, practice, practice! That's what I do but nothing ever turns out perfect.

I made up these little motor mounts this morning.

I finally finished up the sprockets for dozer #2 today! They took a long time to make but I think they turned out pretty well.

Those turned out great! Your really going all out on this one Reg and the results are awesome. These dozers are gonna kick a**.

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

Thanks guys. I think they are a little too time consuming for "mass production" but I guess it all depends on what someone wants. I like them a lot and wish they were on my dozer! I got a good start on all the other idlers yesterday so hopefully this one is rolling in the very near future. It will be interesting to see how it works with gear motors vs servos. Hopefully it is more durable!

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

RCP57-please understand, I am not criticizing your work. You are doing outstanding work on these plastic models but I noticed on your 1st. dozer the sprocket looked a little small for a scale-appearing look. This last one you made looks larger and more detailed and probably fits the scale better (just my opinion). However, I realize that you are trying to build something affordable for these tighter budgets and saving labor is crucial. Maybe you should offer-2- models. A bare bones cheaper machine and an optional model with all the good parts. Just a suggestion but you probably know what you want out of this. I know from my tries that machining detailed parts takes a lot of time and that is money. I am not a big fan of plastic models but I will be keeping up with this!! Very interesting thread.

Yes the sprockets on the first one were just to see if the conversion would even work. I made them up out of two pieces using chunks of stuff lying around my scrap bin. The new pair are one piece and made to look much like a D6 planetary. Even though the sprockets are exactly the same as the original ones I made the planetary hub larger to hide the sprocket and look more "scale". You're right, cost vs build time is almost always an issue so I'd like to keep it simple...Well actually, I would like to build it very detailed but trying to get $1500-2000CAD for a conversion like this might be tough. If people are willing to pay then I am happy to make the parts however they want! I won't make anything like the first drive parts again. I was just thinking that instead of drilling all those holes and making fake bolts, I would just drill dimples and save a bunch of time. When it's finished though, all the critical parts are metal so I guess that price maybe not so out of line. I don't know:confused::confused::confused:

I'm glad you like it Keith! I hear Santa has it on someones wish list for Xmas this year so this elf is working hard....

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

Hey Reg, set the sprockets up on a rotary table, make a plunge cut with a hollow end mill, the nub left can be the faux bolt. see link, http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...JL._SX342_.jpg Then index to the next bolt position, new plunge cut with depth stop. Clean the rest up on the lathe later. Hope this makes sense?

Cheers, Neil.

That's a good idea Neil.

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

Don't know if it helps but all I did on my d11 drive sprockets was drilled the holes and pressed the bolts in. Had to use tweezers to hold the bolts vertical then just pressed them in. Or uhh maybe Santa has room on that list for a printer? Lol. It looks really good, the movement looks strong and fluid. Great job!!

RCP57 12-03-2014 11:31 PM

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

That's what I did on my KW build as well. Interference fit is way better than threading all those tiny holes when the bolts are just for show! On the dozer I just drilled all the holes to the right size and glued in left over pieces of filler rod. Once the glue dried I used my 6" disc sander to make them all the same length. Cheaper than using bolts and it looks nearly as good I think.

Hmmm, my list for Santa already has something really expensive on it so I think I will just try to save up for the printer.... I do want one though...

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

I have been working on these steady lately trying to finish them up. Dozer #1 finally got a paint job and nearly all the track and blade parts are finished for Dozers 2 and 3.

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3ee18a63.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps42547117.jpg

I made up this fake cylinder for the right hand side while the left is rigid. It is spring loaded to allow some give while tilting the blade. The result is some pretty serious articulation without binding.

1 and 2 sitting side by side. I found some paint that matches pretty well.

Thanks Stuart. Well I have busted both so that's not good but I think I have things sorted now. The converted servos are easier to mount in the machine but require more fiddling to attach the sprocket. I think the gear motors are smoother in operation but are more difficult to fit into the machine because of their width. I have one more experiment to try with dozer #3 but both 1 & 2 seem to be working OK.

Thanks Mike. Yes I think it pushed a respectable amount for a small machine.

Today's update. I added the cutting edge to the blade and started work on the open D6H style cab. I have raised the height and added width to the cab in an attempt to make it more to scale for a D6. I still have a bit more to sort out and then I will mount some grab handles and such.

Keith, I know you were totally in love with the stock exhaust pipe but I had to change it...Sorry:rolleyes:

Re: 4 Hour Bruder Dozer

Depending how they are outfitted with aluminum parts, I'm looking to get $1300-$1500 Canadian for them. Either way that would include everything short of a battery and TX/RX. Actually if an Orange RX receiver is compatible with the customers TX, I would include that too. I guess I could sell them with the TX/RX but it would obviously cost more.

If we start talking about these kind of details on the open forum, maybe this should be moved to my vendors section? If any mods see fit to do so please go ahead!

Yeah Brian! It needs a scaled up seat and some other details. You are just the right man for the job! It will definitely be the sweetest Bruder conversion out there(my biased opinion:D). You may need to make more than one set...

No sign of the Chinese Santa yet but this one is nearing completion.

I just assembled it this morning so I need to go over it and brush paint a few nuts and bolts. I also made a drawbar for it but the paint needs another day to dry before I install it. I think it turned out pretty good although I wish I was a better painter.

http://youtu.be/b94Ve-jpaQc The light is not the best in this vid so the color doesn't show up very well.
