Version 1.2 is going to look perfect! So what happens with the body you made so far? Why not continue the build, learn about anymore hiccups in the process and then when your ready, build the new version? Mario |
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Jason, I agree, I think you nailed the new design's proportions and look with a sledge hammer!
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
A def match to a 1:1!
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Looks alot better. Something still looks off with the rib down the hood. Maybe it needs to taper back to nothing at the back end over a longer distance.
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Now that is a cab! I know it has been said before, but you really crushed it with the new design! I can't wait to see this printed!

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Tracks, thats a great resource, never knew about the Vector Drawings. Thanks for the help. Ill look more into those. The support material on the doors? i used Afinia ABS and it is more brittle which makes it much easier to remove..sorta snaps aparts without alot of stress on the part. That and a paint scraper.
Mario, thank you. The first body was a great prototype and helped quite a bit to work out some issues i wasnt sure about. Pugs, I know..and im not scaling every detail, wanted to sorta make it" my own" design. Kinda like If i were to design a real Kenworth..what do i want in the design..Like the split window, the sloped roof on a w900, when i think that only comes on the 900L...Some aspects of my design are less true to prototypical units than others and i found that what the design looks like on the screen and what actually prints are two different things. Ex, the grill on the screen looks taller than it is wide, but in reality the actual print is more square...so knowing that i want to get the "general shape" more correct, which i feel alot more confident after reading all the great support from you guys, and after printing this next one ill prob make more changes based on what i like or dont. Its a process i guess. But thanks for the suggestions, i appreciate your help. Bigrig, Thank you! Dabomb, thanks SP, lol..with a sledgehammer..Ok i know i have a better design now. :D Thanks! |

This is just AWESOME!!!!!
Boy I think this give a whole new meaning to "Scratch Built" Nice work |
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
I'm in awe.
I've been looking at the hobby style 3d printers for a while, like the Makerbot ones. Wish i had some spare cash! Its one thing to spend $1k or more on a 1/14 truck over several months, but stumping up all that cash at once makes my wallet wince! By the way Jason, instead of taking a photo of the screen and getting the resulting moire from the pixels, do a screen capture with ALT-PrintScreen. That will capture the active window to the clipboard. Then paste into paint or something. |
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Thanks guys for the comments and support. And Kingbob, lol, great tip! Was obviously unaware of that, I'll give it a try. I made a few adjustments again so ill show the latest design. And btw I spent some time researching printers and you get what you pay for. Look at the Afinia.. It's a pleasure to use. The only printer that creates its own support which is really important.
Pugs, I changed the hood. I also began printing version 1.2 with the fenders and grill. Will post some pics ASAP. |

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Can't wait to see that cab printed! I'm sure it will look incredible! :D
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Thanks man, Got the grill, fenders and hood printed. I strategically cut and placed cab parts on the work table to give the printer a good workout. Should be 13 hrs to print that load which will be the whole cab minus the doors and windshield ( black parts from first cab). Ill post up the results for this weeks attempt. Already shaved about 1/3 the time to print from the first try. Also using less dense fill as it was overkill and a waste of material.
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Truly awesome. I was thinking of building an M1070 next, but the amount of scratch building i'd have to do was putting me off. Maybe i should invest in one of these, make life easier for myself.
The Afinia is also sold as the "UP Plus" 3d printer, about $1700 locally. Still not exactly cheap, but could be a candidate for this years tax return :D |
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
It looks great. When you thinned out the parts, how much thinner are they? I did a track link a while back and posted on my track parts thread, I had a good bit of clean up to uncover the detail but seems like it worked out well, how much extra time did it take you to clean everything up so far? I think it's great to have all this technology at our finger tips as long as the power doesn't go off. Keep up the good work. Colin
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Clean up as in remove the support material from the printed part? Takes me a few minutes per piece roughly. I have made some track parts too and that did take some time to clean up because the bottom side had more details where the support was. Try printing your parts on their side. Sometimes it means less support.

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Heres something to keep this thread alive..A mock up pic to get an idea of where Ver 1.2 is going. Havent had alot of time recently for much progress. Still have alot of body work to do but getting there slowly. Working on body mount options next and going to design a speaker box to sit in the bottom of the cab. Also need to relocate the front axle to center in the fenders. Thx for looking.

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
That's the sweetest cab i've seen made yet! Keep to the great work

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
I agree! This cab is looking clean and mean! Thanks for the update:) can't wait to see more.

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
execlent 3d printing work there.... looks great
You have convinced me I need to get my 3d printer working again or get one of those Afina's... Regards, Jeff |
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Do we possibly see a new vendor selling 3d printed bodies???
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
I love that cab, excellent job so far. Keep it up. I'm sure a lot of guys here would love a chance at buying one of your cabs.

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Ahh, thanks guys! I'm feeling good after those comments. I'm still not 100% satisfied with the results which are mainly due to my design. The hood in my opinion is too tall and the grill too wide, but shortening those dimensions results in changing the rest of the body as everything relates to something else. I'm not wanting to start from scratch again like I did for ver 1.2 as I'm so anxious to see something finished that resembles what I pictured in my head in the beginning so I'm gonna just continue to finish this cab. And the further i take each cab in the physical state, the more i learn what not to do mext time. I'd like to give it a few more tries before thinking about selling a body, and honestly I don't know what kind of price to put on something like this. The print time is still 25+ hrs. And there's a lot of pre/post print work involved too. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I may do something like that in the future after working out the design. What really need to do for the next project is take hard measurements of a 1:1 and convert to this scale. That will yield the best product. Ill have to get ahold of a few people to let me measure their trucks. Want to do a t800 next.
Thanks for the encouragement! |
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
looks real good
not sure on the w900 looks more like a t904 like we have down here |
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Your KW is coming along nicely it looks good keep up the good work. Ed

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Few pics after getting the cab mounted to chassis and mock bumper and pipes to see what looks good. Hood still needs a hinge.

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Jason - very nice - 25hr - a lot less than I would have figured. I like what you have!
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
It's really something to see this cab, after printing. I think it looks great from all the angles. I know you think the hood is a little tall, but you don't even notice the height of the hood until you get a straight on side shot of it. From an angle, even if it's slight, you really can't tell. If you finish this cab off, I think it will look pretty awesome. Who knows, a set of breathers on the side might help pull the truck together.
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
So what the hoods a little tall. Guys still put those 1:16 cat motors in 2:14 trucks and they still look great. I bet if you paint this baby and put all your bolt on goodies on it, you'll never notice it.

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Jammer, thanks
Izzy, Thanks. Its actually a few more hrs with all the little extras. Next truck will be easier having worked out alot of bugs this time. Heres a pic waiting for one of your Dump boxes. Cant wait till those are available! Thanks for replying. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7...0+21.14.08.jpg Nate, Thanks and your right it looks good from most angles, its growing on me and im going to order some air cleaners and hood emblems from Rick soon. Those should tie it together. Thanks! Oz, Brick..Thank you. Waiting on more parts. Once i have everything i need, ill finish up the body work and paint it. Thanks for the comments! Heres what i got going on under the cab. R2 Trans mount, which the Speaker enclosure and cab mount to. I figured. Lets see how much speaker i can stuff in the cab for the best possible sound using the SMX im waiting on. Ive still got plenty of room under the hood for the rest of my Electronics. Although i do need to get a little creative there. The hinged hood will be nice and easy for access to the LiPo and ESC. The speaker faces forward so it will maybe be cool to hear it coming head on..Who knows, have to wait and see. Its all experimental. If you look you can see the speaker mounted behind the windshield in the previous pics. Its designed to use as much cab space as possible but not interfere with wiring for future lighting. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T...0+21.26.40.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8...0+21.27.13.jpg No body mentioned it or didnt catch it but the pass door doesnt have the lower door window..lol I didnt even realize it until after i was assembling this cab. When i redesigned it in CAD. I mirrored the driver side and forgot all about the little window. I thought that was so unique and here i never ended up with it. ...But i may cut one out before i finish. It was a late night that night..:o |

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
If you still have the dimensions of the door on your computer mapped. I'd suggest just making the adjustment on the computer and reprinting the passenger door with the window. It should fit right onto the cab.
Just a thought. :D :D - RCT |
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Yes... Good thought however id need to cut the exciting door out to fit the new door...Cut the whole door out or cut the little window out...
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
I would just cut the window out. Should be easy. Mark where you need it to be, grab a small drill bit (like a #80 or so), and drill around the edge of the window frame. Make the holes close enough together so it takes minimal cutting with a hobby knife to finish it up. Cut from hole to hole, then just file or trim along the marked out window frame edge. Easy. Even for me, and I'm horrible with bodywork!
|
Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Haha, I'm sure your better than you say you are. Thanks for the instructions, gonna give that a shot. Should work out just fine.

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
I've been watching it all come together. Amazing how technology continues to develop and become more affordable. Nice job and tough looking build so far.

Re: 3D printing KH Body Attempt
Awesome build, really innovative! Just wondering, what are you going to do for windows? I've been wondering since you started. Really anxious to see this complete! :D
