Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thank you guys.
Well I can't believe it's been well over a month again since I've worked on this. I'm slowly getting caught up on other stuff and once I do I plan to focus all of my efforts on this truck until it's done. I did get a little done yesterday and today though as it finally steers! Much more work to do now that I know it works! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa418nXG9f8 http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5jatukfj.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psmstldliq.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pscem912tm.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps47bnbyp5.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psmnehr4yo.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb2471tao.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psduslw2ca.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psxkqcoc0n.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb4drsdrm.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pseau0tdbm.jpg |

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Well two months have gone by again since the last time I worked on this. I had cut the leaf springs months ago and had most of the machining done on the trunnion thingy so I thought I should start putting it all together. In an effort to make the springs look thicker I sheared some styrene to the same width as the springs and glued it on. I then made up the U bolts and threaded the ends for 2-56 nuts. Once painted I think this will look pretty good. For now it reminds me of an Oreo cookie.lol I also finally bolted the front fenders on using 0-80 bolts.

Thanks boys. I spent a few hours working on some frame plates today. It will have to go back on the shelf again tomorrow:(.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
I put in a couple of hours on this the other day and made the brush guard for the radiator.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
The real truck has the frame gusseted in the middle to support the twin, triple stage hydraulic cylinders. I machined some gussets up for the toy today and have them temporarily held in place.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
There is a lot to like in this build Reg. Tonight I'm liking the Front Bumper........
I might need to ask if i can have four of those for my KH/GH...:D Carry on Please :) |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Starting to take on another shape
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Wow that's an amazing bit of work. I like it.
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks very much!
I've been working on it a bit again. I made the fuel tank today and started on the rad shutters. A few days back I made up the muffler and heat shield. I started making the marker lights but they are smaller than a Tamiya light. Anyone have an idea where I could buy slightly smaller orange lenses or even the orange plastic? I'm thinking I will need to make my own but I was hoping not to.lol http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psvakmh0hs.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psx45h05j3.jpg |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Testors model paint made a yellow lense paint , also different colours . Or what about led lenses ?
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Anything like these? http://www.veroma-modellbau.eu/shop/...ckleuchte.html
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks guys I had another suggestion that I am going to look into first and that's a local plastics store. They may have amber acrylic.
Here's a small but tedious update. 2 1/2 days of off and on fiddling to get the shutters made and glued in at the right spacing. It may not be perfect but I'm not redoing it!lol http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psxhrfialo.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pskw5bb8gk.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pspy0flxvv.jpg Reg |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Reg very nice
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Looking good
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Looks great, but I thought you were going to have them heat activated off the motor.....or was that just a bad dream?:D
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Haha! Gotta stir the pot hey?
I was going to operate them with a servo like I did on my tiny KW but I'm not happy with how they work on that truck and on top of that the Hayes owner would like an interior in the cab. That means all of the electronics and battery have to fit under the hood and it's a tight squeeze on my own Hayes without adding more stuff. I put them in the semi open position so that the speakers could scream!lol |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Great job on the grill Reg it looks real good. Ed
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks Ed.
Well I've been working on this a lot lately trying to get it done before the next decade starts. I had intended to make my own diffs but I just don't want to build something for someone else that might be grief down the road. I'm a bit disappointed in myself because everything but the rear axles will be hand made. Oh well, the fellow I'm building the truck for will like it just the same so carry on we must. The rear suspension is done now finally. It was a lot of PITA work to make all of this come together but I think it worked out fairly well. It has good articulation, looks more like the real deal than anything I could purchase and the springs are STIFF which is good. Another nice feature is that it doesn't flop all over when you pick it up like my truck with the Lesu suspension. I also got the gearbox fitted as well. I like how it worked out looking like an oil pan. It should look good painted Cummins old gold.. Tomorrow I will be trying to sort out the drive shaft situation and then I can start on the body again. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psok1prhfv.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psck2ftosa.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pssigwxutc.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psyklgvlo3.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psl1omdfoa.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psjyyigc0o.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psemassjgq.jpg |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Somebody is going to be amazingly happy , beautiful
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Looks like Makita engine :)
Will you use forward/rearward and speedcontrol built in to drillmachine? Dan |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Awesome work Reg. Keep it up she's going to be a stunner when done!
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks guys.
Yes it's a Makita diesel Dan.lol This particular drill only had forward and reverse at full speed so I will be installing a regular ESC. Half a day in the shop again today and it finally does this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBwpmYmfacU |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
I like the slow speed of steering servo. To often you see them working like on compressed air! Scale speed is one important issue, best model can be ruined if runned to fast, if it's a truck, earth mover, train doesn't matter.
Can't wait to see the progress on this one (closely followed as your other builds). Dan |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
I agree Dan!
Working on the little Hayes HD again from now until the show next weekend. I made up the smaller "hydraulic" tank today and then worked with brass sheet for the very first time to make up the mounting brackets and straps for both tanks. Soldering .030 brass is much easier than TIG welding aluminum for these tiny brackets that's for sure. I tried out my mini butane torch for the first time today as well so that was entertaining. I think I know why it was on sale for $7 at Princess Auto but it does the job.lol I also finally got the air cleaner mounted. Next up will be steps, air tanks and a few other details on the cab/hood like mirrors and handles. Just when I think the "to do" list is getting shorter I realize that there is SO much more to do.lol http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psypg1dzse.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psdozrj5qd.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psg8c8cgo8.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psoyvbdlcw.jpg |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Man all these details are killing it! The tanks and strap brackets look bloody great!
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Brass is really great material to do small details. And when you have a killer alu body like this, you cant result with less than a masterpiece!
If you hit you bumper to a rock, will it bend like the real one? That was my idea, to press form alu panels over milled body to get thin alu panels that will be damaged like the real thing when driving. It was more od 1/10 trail hilux idea, than 1/14, but I think it would be cool. |
