Nice work Reg. Girls never like the smell of paint for some reason. I don't know why, but that's a good looking truck. Magnets seems like a great way to go for the tailgate latch. These boxes look really nice. Do you use a box and pan brake to form the outside walls?

Re: RCP57's first King...

The box on the truck in the pictures is "borrowed" so there won't be a cab guard on it but the box that I have at the powder coaters does and you are right, the pipes do look less out of place.

I think maybe my wife was upset with the smell because the truck isn't painted her favourite color...come to think of it the truck was her favourite color before I painted it...hmmm:confused:

I use self made dies(spelling:confused:) to press out the side panels. One shot, all done! I don't have the skills required to make two of the same if I had to make all those bends with a box/pan brake. I do however make the rest of it this way.

More pics later!

I made up a couple different pieces for the rear end today. What's the favourite?

Reg, did you machine your die out of aluminum or steel? That's a great way to go, when you want to make duplicate parts. I did the same for my fuel tank straps, after I made 4 by hand and they all ended up being a different length and having different sized eyelets. Drove me crazy, and then I thought, why I don't I make a die....

Re: RCP57's first King...

The die set is made from mild steel so it should last for a while. I would like to build another set with a different shape but need to see some of my investment come back first. Only the ribs get formed in the die leaving me to adjust the height a little with the top and bottom 90's.

I like your rig. Very realistic.

A lot of the times when I make parts it takes me more time to make the fixtures than it does to make the parts.

My problem when I want to make the part again I forget where I put the fixture.

Great looking truck!! Both of the shorter bumpers look the best to me. Most of the bumpers that I see are painted black. This would make a very big difference in the look of the bumper. ?? for you- what are you using to make the notch for the frame in the bumpers?

Trucker_Jo 11-22-2013 06:47 PM

Re: RCP57's first King...

I like the drop down bumper if you are going for a more custom look for sure. But the shorter plate painted black would look killer too for that work truck look:D

Re: RCP57's first King...

Thanks guys. I just use my bandsaw to cut out the notch for the frame. Not the cleanest way to do it but it's the fastest way with the tools I have.

I got the box back from the powder coaters today so I painted up the mounts and stuck the truck together for some photos. I am still waiting for some stuff to come in the mail that will make it run but I wanted to see what it looked like. The color I chose turned out to be a little different than what I imagined but overall I really like the powder coat. It hides some imperfections and doesn't show finger prints every time I touch it like the aluminum does.

Let me know what you think!

Stacks are still too tall Reg... some operators, ya know?! you're just baiting 'em to take 'em off. :D

Powdercoat turned out pretty sweet!

Would bead blasting the aluminum give a similar effect? I remember what your KW axles looked like.

I see now how your tailgate lock works for a positive release. Genius

Horizontal ribs have always been my preference too Pete, that's what's common around here too. ;)

Thanks very much Chris. I think the powder coat makes it look much more professional and complete than leaving it raw.

Do you wish yours was powder coated? I do.

Thanks for the reward Rob. Those quality videos are always too short!:bounce::bounce:

Yeah I will probably take the pipes off with the first bucket of dirt!

I think the powder coat looks great although it looks more 70's disco in person. Next time I will choose a less metallic color. I think bead blasting will just make them look chalky and attract stains. Should I take yours in before they go in the mail?:D

The gate release works good in theory but not as good in reality. It is hard to get the geometry right with my current setup.

Big thanks to everybody for commenting!

That is a clean looking build!! Great job on the screw drive! Love the look of the dump bed. Awesome job!!

I got some goodies in the mail today! The package contained enough parts to get this up and moving so I took the afternoon off from box building and got to installing the ESC, battery and adjusting everything. I still need to mount some things inside the cab but at least it drives!

The truck looks great Reg! You are adjusting well going from scratch builder to assembling pre fabs:rolleyes::p:D
I like your choice of colour but when I saw it , the first thing that came to mind is.... Where's the green and white?
Have you considered duplicating the 850 paint scheme and logo onto your KH ?
I think that would look sharp:cool:

Thanks Mario. I am adjusting but it is definitely not the same feeling of accomplishment. They are a cool little truck though for sure and it's a great platform to make custom pieces for;).

I had thought about painting this the same color combo as the big 850 but didn't want to put the effort in that the multi colored paint job requires. When I get around to building a cab from aluminum it will get a more "vintage logger" paint scheme...Until then Ford, chrome yellow it is!...I can't believe I used a Ford color...lol
