3rd , break the assembly into parts , duplicate where needed , place parts of same thickness on that certain thickness plate in such a way as to min. waste . keep in mind I'm doing all my designs in 2D  . 4th import part plate file to cam , hrs. of programing ( for me any way ) , simulate to make sure everything is what you want (IMPORTANT) double check , triple check , maybe quad check  . 5th, load file in machine and set up (IMPORTANT) double check , triple check , maybe quad check  6th , push green button and watch crunching action in blink of eye :eek::mad::mad::mad: only if you DID NOT , double check , triple check , maybe quad check . As you can see this CNC thing has and still is a rough road for me yet  I still like hand cranks , but , with what I can do on the VMC now , this CNC thing is catching on :D . |

Re: 990 cat loader
A few pics of to days carnage :o I made a bunch of brass shavings and a few parts :o (cylinders :D) not quite done :( ran outa day :( + the groving bar I made with major inferior material didn't werk :( so I gotta order 1  Need to cut the ID seal grooves in the glands . I also got the front drive shaft hooked up last evening . I also remade the engine hood . the 1st was made from scrap panel from a delivery van which didn't bend to well without breaking ( not 6061 ) so I picked up a peice of .125" 6061 sheet and re ran it . No pics of the new 1 , forgot that pic :o .

So I milled it out of .75 " plate old http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0190.jpg new http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0192.jpg oil vent/fill http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0196.jpg for size comparison . I have it sitting on a 24" x 12" x 1.625" plate in the mill http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0149.jpg thanks fer lookin ;) back too the grindstone  |
Re: 990 cat loader - Hydraulic lift cylinders
IH,
can you show some detailed photos of the end seals for the rams you have made and give an indication of the physical size along with whether you had any issues with leaks etc. Love the build, looks awesome. Cheers Trackerman |
Re: 990 cat loader
Oh, like that last picture, start with a big chunk of alu and a good CNC machine, minutes later a ready 990, ha ha.
The model looks realy good, have had a special eye on the big one since building the 992 over 30 years ago. Not so many projects on wheel loaders, maybee because of availibility of ready to run models. What program are you using when drawing? Is it possible to get an description of the different steps involved from drawing to machined part? Dan |
Re: 990 cat loader

Re: 990 cat loader
now thats a beautiful lookin 990 Steve! I should know, I work for a Cat dealership and as a matter of fact there is a 990 in our shop this very moment. Good loader, its been working at this mine for over 15 yrs now.... I did a complete rebuild of this machine twice now over the years....kinda funny, I wish I could build em but I just fix em. If you need any more measurements or pics, just let me know and I'll send ya what you need, I know this machine inside out.

I hope thumbnail pics work for now. I'm using my company laptop and I dont have photo bucket yet. We currently have the steer joystick apart and its not in the photos. I can get better pics of the Z arm once machine is back up and running. Currently have the bucket held back with a few wire cables just in case we have to pull it out of the shop. I took a quick measurement of the z arm... distance from center of top pin to center is 41 1/2" . Distance from bottom pin to center is 52".
Like I say, once she's up and running I'll get some better pics for ya. I also sent the pics to my home computer and can send them to you from there when I get back at the end of the month. Have a great day! Mario |

Re: 990 cat loader
Gidday Steve.
Hey Mate, can't offer any advise though I can add to the list of many readers who have praised you on your efforts. What a fantastic looking model and to see it comming together is a trip in itself. Totally impressed of what can be made with the "Can Do Attitude" Can imagine what the guys that work on or operate this machine would be thinking. Awsome craftmanship Steve. Shane. |

Re: 990 cat loader
Thanks Mario ;) , Shane
well we made it to Z bar #4  and what a !@#$ it was al the way  Guess thats what I get for staying up till 4 in the AM a week ago gettin it right  turns out the loader arms where too small too  So remade them too and thanks too having a tig the whole loader arm assmb. got welded together ;) I still want to clean up the weld a lil better in the mill . I couldn't resist a lil paint on it either :o . made my Y's the old way drill press hand mill (file) and vise doo too both mills being setup for other ops . nuff BS here's some pics :o http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0220.jpg http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0221.jpg http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0223.jpg http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0224.jpg http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/DSCN0222.jpg I want to clean up my bucket a little more with the tig so gotta sand blast it . Pool noodle did the trick on the tires ;) |
Re: 990 cat loader
Wow, Steve, that looks great!
|
Re: 990 cat loader
thanks Rob :)
ALMOST:D:D:D gotta figgure the mixing on the radidio and change out a leaky robbie valve head :( the tolorences on these things are pathetic , must be +/- .01  with a little tinkering you can get them to work right , except for the 1 where it leaked right out the rotor stem . they should be a running fit with no sidw to side play . I got bucket and steering werkin :D just waitin on the slow lathe guy to get my new rams for the lift cylinders done  |
Re: 990 cat loader
werking!!!:D:D:o:o figured out the mixing just alittle reading of the manual :rolleyes:pump is on my aux1(flaps)chl . I got the steering so that when you activate the steer servo the pump runs about 50% to werk the boom/bucket put the pump switch in mid position for about 50% for guts , switch in 3rd pos. As for the valves , they're like a HD gotta tweek them when they're new and after so many mi /hrs :p

Re: 990 cat loader (WERKING)
Way to go Steve, it can be quite frustrating I know. It makes it all worth it when it comes alive though. WOOHOO Now video please!!!!
|
Re: 990 cat loader (WERKING)
will do Ben In the pea gravel too ;):D
|
Re: 990 cat loader (WERKING)
Man Steve that looks great!!! youve done an awesome job with it so far!
|
Re: 990 cat loader (WERKING)
thanks Aaron
to answer Mario's ? from the trailer build . I was digging pea gravel well except for the mixing thing with the radio . the pump would always go down to the steering settings and wouldn't have the hair to pick up a full bucket . So I just put the pump full on or full off :D then moved the coal pile twice till I blew the clipard cylinder I used for steering well It was leaking right off the bat but desided to leak alot more  no vid :o will get 1 soon I hope :o right now I'm trying to make new steer cylinders and my own spool type valve . I hate these robbies  it's not the style I hate just the tolerances are piss poor . you tighten them to eliminate the bypassing then you can't turn them . I had brass bushings (not oil lite )that I made for my axle shafts while waiting for bearings , well they started to sieze up :rolleyes:so in went the bearings . easiest set of axles I worked on to date ;)not to mention tough as carbide , so to speak :D |
Re: 990 cat loader (WERKING)
Thanks for the update Steve, very nice of you..........oooops, have I struck a cord of frustration? Hydraulics causing grief ?... Welcome to my world of fixing....not building :)
there is no doubt you will figure it out. Can't wait to see more!....... Mario |
Re: 990 cat loader (WERKING)

Re: 990 cat loader (WORKING)
thanks henry I tinkered on after I ran it last night made a few small things that I could do while waiting to change parts on the mill . I got another 30 mins in tonight . 1st night with no leaks :D and 20 bar . I still got little odds and ends like better linkages for the valves to see If I can get better control . vid is uploading verrrryyyyy ssssssllllllllloooooowwwwwwwlllllllllllllllyyyyyyy :(
