Cooper
Back to the 3stage cylinders, we also made a double acting 5 stage cylinder, I had 3 oil baths but got it working in the end. In this cylinder we but oil in on the small end, this was done by inserting a tube into the end you but the oil in, the tube went down to the bottom end of the small stage which had a solid piston with a hole the od size of the tube and a o-ring in the hole. This tube allowed the oil to enter the bottom of the cylinder always had the large stage move out first followed by 2cd then small stage. Now if some of you out there want a double acting 2 to ? cylinder I can supply the information, there is a trick to it, but it sure makes the dump box come down faster. Earl |

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Earl, I think I can make this double acting fairly easily. On the small diameter rod I may use solid stock and drill two holes length of it. Side by side so to speak. One completely through and the other stoping at outlet hole. The hard part would be having such a small workpiece keeping drill holes true. And being creative on end for fittings and mounting hole. Probably solder brass tube for extended location of fittings. But I think it could be done. And then a regular servo controlled valve could be implemented for up/down operation. I have been worried about having enough force to retract the cylinder if it was single acting. And you if it were double acting movement could be more controlled for extension and retraction. Plus when the cylinder was in any position it would stay there. Single acting it tends to drift, oil back feeding through pump when not engaged. That would be eliminated. Thanks earl, you help my understanding of this mini project.

http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psc5atlzzr.png Single and double acting cylinders reg, on the double acting one the diagonal tube is what I'm talking about. That one needs to penetrate complete stage of that rod. The other hole I would make would only have to penetrate to the oil port on side of that stage. |

You said penetrate...Sorry, I'm still a 12 year old boy at heart...
