Nate,

Can you counterbore a hole in the brass part so the socket head sits down a bit? I assume that is the look you are not quite satisfied with?

Definitely. Much easier to control the heat to the workpiece.

I have a question if you are into such a detailed model why didn't you use the same lock foe the pins that the real excavators use? Ed

Show me a good reference photo and I'd be glad to. Here in cornland, there's not a need for such large equipment. Suppose I could go up to Moline and take some photos (if they even have them there)

Moving right along. Edge welding is easy to screw up, looks like I've got the machine setup correct!

To answer you about a picture I did not get one but I called the local Deere equipment dealer and they said that there is just a strap over the end of the pin with a bolt holding the strap on. Ed

Nate your welding on that bucket looks great. It takes lots of practice and usually many years to achieve the quality of weld you have there. Will definitely be waiting for the next pics of that bucket.

Just like the last version, I'm modifying an RCP Crawlers TLT Straight Axle adapter so I can service the outer section easily. This time it will mount cleaner to the frame via screws.

The axle housing will mount to the plate with counter-sunk screws and then the plate will bolt to the frame. Probably hex heads to make it look 1:1.

Nice machining! Is the frame of the dolly CNC machined or cut with a bandsaw and polished on the edges? What kind of mill do you have?

First piece pictured is bandsaw/grinder/belt sander/filed. I cheated on the next three and used the plasma torch. All of them are cut and finished. Just need to weld standoffs in place to get the 2.5" spacing. Going to figure out a different method for tire support this time. I like RCP's idea with his Kenworth tire inserts. Wrapping around like I did last time definitely made a small bump in the tire.

Got the new dollies finished up. I lost track of how much time I have in these. Well over 20-30 hours. The first versions I didn't spend as much time in the preplanning as I did on these. The fit on this pair are **** near perfect and look much better on the excavator with the 2.2 wheels/tires. (Sorry I didn't get more photos of the build process. I'm in Indy rush mode to get everything done before the show)

Milled slots in the bottom of the uprights and dropped in and tig welded the rods in place. Used some plates to keep the uprights spaced correctly while in the vise.

Next was cutting new inserts for the tires to support the weight of the 850D. This dense foam stacked inside the tire should do the trick. That's a special tool made by Olfa for cutting out lexan body wheel wells.

Wow, those buckets and the dollies turned out beautiful. I'm not a professional welder, but your welds look really good. Nice work.

Yup just tacked. I ran out of tig gas so after the photo I went over to the mig to finish it up.
