Re: Volvo A40F

Ari ur work is top notch u have some serious talent, u make me push my limited skills to the max and I thank you for that, I'm currently building a CAT 374D like yours it gave me the inspiration and a lot of the ideas I hope u don't mind, I was wondering if u are happy with the hydraulic pump and motor, valves etc u used or if u would change them.? I've been looking into premacon pump and valves? But I just can't make my mind up, at the pace I build at I'm not going to post any pics on here until I'm almost finnished but I would like to send u some pics to see what u think would u have an email address u could pm me, ?

Again thanks for the inspiration and sharing ur knowledge,

Regards Steve

Very impressive work!!! It is truly a master piece! How long have you been a machinist?

Re: Volvo A40F

Hi guys:)
It's been quiet with the A40 as I've been making some parts for my friend for several weeks now, but now I got some time for this too.

I started to make the drop box. I was originally thinking that I make it with two larger gears, but I soon noticed that there's not enough room between the steering cylinders. So I have to use three smaller gears to make it fit.

Good choice of axles, I am a big fan of these which is the best engineered axles in the Tamiya scale I have studied.
It is a special tool needed to make the internal slots in theg ears. Can you show a picture of it? I imagine it is a quite expencive tool?

Those are made with keyway broach. The set I got can you do 2 and 3mm keyways in to 6,8 and 10mm holes.
It's not that expensive: https://www.wabeco-remscheid.de/keil...adeln-hss.html

You also need some kind of arbor press to push the tool through the gear.

The drawings are from the Volvo A40 parts and repair manual and from the brochures.

I got the dropbox attached to the frame and also got the 3-speed gearbox mounted. The gearbox is made by Veroma modellbau.
I also made a short video of the drivetrain running:

Re: Volvo A40F

WOW!!! every square inch of this screams masterpiece. If you don't mine I have a few questions, How did you attach the rubber bumpers for the rear suspension to the aluminum? How are you cutting the thin sheet metal? with your mill?

Again you are an amazing machinist. Skilled craftsman are becoming few and far between as the years go on Seeing this enforces the fact I plan to make my son learn a hands on trade as well as a college degree. I believe there will be a day when a college educated man will come 2nd to a well trained tradesman.

If you have a lathe can also make channels for braces, I do not believe it was possible, but I ended up witnessing with my own eyes the operator making the key a pulley / shaft

Just make a tool in the channel width and entering decimal measures to the channel.

Note:. Power off.

If I remember correct I have made keyways with lathe at school many years ago.
I do have a lathe, but those keys I use are only 2mm thick and I'm not sure how well a self made high speed steel tool might last on that.
But anyway with bigger ones it does work:)
