Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Well, here it goes my first build ever. I want to build a 3 axle 18t crane truck in 1/14 scale, like this.
https://i.imgur.com/LrkCriZh.jpg So far the only thing have made is a clamshell bucket and it is only about half finished, but here is what I have done so far. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-V...303_134544.jpg Feel free to tell me your ideas :). Shawn |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
I will follow this build . I've been writing a list of stuff I need to build it . I have the operating manuals for it and the chance to have the real one and then they scrapped it ,so sad . Mike

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
I'll be watching, too. You can see my 25B build here http://www.rctruckandconstruction.co...ead.php?t=3705
I haven't done anything on it for a few years now because I've moved and don't have a place to set up my shop yet. And another crane project here with a clam. http://www.rctruckandconstruction.co...read.php?t=992 Don't be afraid to build weight into a clam. Weight equals digging ability. |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
:bounce:Looks like your off to a great start. Will be watching with great interest. I raln one that looked like the Bucyrus only it was built by American so my vote is for #1..:bounce: I keep thinking I should try one but havn't found the subject yet

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Looks like your doing a 14B or is it going to be the 22B ? Any drawings for the upper works let me know. I have an extensive collection of Bucyrus-Erie parts manuals.

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Shawn,
I hope you also plan on a drag bucket? I have both for my NyLint conversion. The drag bucket is SO effective compared to the clam when trying to dig dirt or sand or any other loose material. The drag bucket always amazes me when I run it, it works REALLY good compared to the clam. I like to use the clam to pick up solid objects like chunks of concrete paver blocks. Also, the clam is so sensitive to line control, any operator slip ups means you will likely drop the contents of the bucket. And one more thing, don't try to use a single wrap on the closer pulleys. It really does help to have more leverage on the closer line to help prevent lifting the bucket instead of closing it. And, I would like to see the second one.:D Jim |

Yes I do plan on making a drag bucket. For the clamshell I'm going to do a triple or quadruple wrap for the closer pulleys. So I have 1 vote for the first one and 1 vote for the second one now, hmm... :p Shawn |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
I'll make it easy for you. Build both of them...........one with drag bucket and one with the clam  The fact is you can never have to many........:bounce:
I will follow this for sure, Good Luck |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
I will be watching this build since I am also a dragline fan and this kinda falls into that group. Personally I like the 2nd. one but I would say build the one that you have or can get the most information on. Info is key and very hard to find on some of these old builds. Good luck!!

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
I agree with modelman. Build the one you have the most info on or can get the most info on. Should be an interesting build.

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Okay a quick update.
I purchased a knight hauler kit so I finally get this project started. :bounce: Shawn |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Well the kit got here yesterday so i have a chassis to start on :bounce:. Now I need get some styrene for the fenders and cab.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-V...o/100_1485.JPG Where's the best place to get styrene? And what thickness should I get? Shawn |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Get in touch with fhhhstix (Travis) here on the forum, he can get you the styrene and help you with deciding what thickness you need.
|
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Okay, thank you for the info.
Shawn |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Sign shops and a decent plastic shop will have all the styrene you will ever need . I also use thin plexiglass . Mike

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Thanks for the suggestion i will keep that in mind.

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Well, I'm back to work on the crane truck
I have started on the front cab, this is my first time working with styrene so I made some mistakes :o I don't think I did too bad for my first try  what do you guys think? http://imgur.com/Om6uVVeh.jpg http://imgur.com/qmdeGuvh.jpg http://imgur.com/k2Lcex3h.jpg http://imgur.com/TDfeFG2h.jpg http://imgur.com/HqTkA0fh.jpg http://imgur.com/kAdpSOfh.jpg Shawn |

Trail and errors that's the way we learn I think you r on a roll to success
Like it keep it going.:) |

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
The cab is mounted to the frame
It turned out to be easier than I expected, I just had to make a bracket so that the cab mounts right to the stock bumper mount on the knight hauler frame. http://i.imgur.com/nyjtukVl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Fyx3pw3l.jpg http://i.imgur.com/5K1mBoJl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/iYsRY7tl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Mf7GFnPl.jpg |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Just a quick update. I'm to the point where I can start designing the mechanical parts of the crane, which is good I guess
Still a lot of body work to do, but after I get the crane working. I need to start getting more pictures when I'm building :o http://i.imgur.com/QwyNMqll.jpg http://i.imgur.com/qqfXYTMl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/F3HyQLal.jpg http://i.imgur.com/FQ5aEPVl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/osmiVsjl.jpg Shawn |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Cool!
|
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Looking good mine hasn't moved an inch
|
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Thats an awesome looking crane truck! It looks like body work is coming together fairly quickly.
Any plans yet how you're going to do the crane part? |

I have a few ideas. For boom I'm going to use brass, which means I have to make up a jig of some sort to keep things square. As for the hoist, lift and drag winches i will use gear motors. But I will have to get my lathe running :( before I can start working on things like the cable drums, pulleys or the swing ring. |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Hi Krewmember I have been designing bits of my truck the boom hers a picture . It's laser cut steel that I will weld together . Each section is scale 20 feet long I will make it so you can add or remove the centre sections they will bolt together . I'm getting a KH in June then I can start the truck part . Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
SWEET looking Boom I'm so wanting that..........:bounce:
|
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
That boom is really impressive. The laser cut steel is a great idea.
I will probably still be using brass for the boom, do to the fact that I have no welder. I can't wait to see the rest your project. BTW what crane do you plan on building? Bucyrus? American? Bantam  Shawn |
Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Bucyrus ! I saw one in a quarry 4-5 years ago and decided to build one then but had no clue about rc trucks until 3 years ago and a eureka lite went of in my head . I also found the operators manual which has a few drawings and measurements . I'm going to make the rest out of brass cabs etc . Mike

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
I ran across this while looking for extra details to make for my crane hauler, they've got a few other bucyrus erie machines that may help out, each machine goes on to a page with more pics.

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
I haven't posted here in awhile, this project has been on the shelf since my last post. I pulled it off the shelf and got a little bit of work done on it.
I rough sanded the cab roof and fenders. http://i.imgur.com/8EnUYNHh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/O8X7oToh.jpg I also added the grill and some small detail to the bumper as see in this photo http://i.imgur.com/qWli2w5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/c8lh2h4h.jpg Still need to do the headlights, turn signals, the brass "Transit Crane" nameplate. And those vent things  I also did a little work on the crane's housing. Made the radiator panel which means the crane has a caterpillar engine ;) I also added some rivets using a paper hole punch. The door now slides as well :p http://i.imgur.com/9IW7Caeh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/wVdxDH9h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/CaxaLO2h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dO2owzyh.jpg I'm still trying to figure it out how to go about making the cranes frame. my plan was to mill a base out of a block of aluminum, but I no longer have access to a milling machine. So that plan is out :( maybe I can solder together a frame out of brass  Shawn |

Re: Bucyrus Erie crane truck
Thank you, that's pretty much what I had in mind.
I just looked in to what it would cost to make the base out of brass, and it would be a little out of my price range :o But I have access to a welder, so I can probably use steel instead. Shawn |
