Back in the saddle again!soon to be skidder!
Purchased a pricey J/D tractor a while back for the cab.Managed to come up w/most of the parts to do my build, except for the pump. When I placed the order for the pump, was told don't hold my breath waitin for it.
Well.....Here it's one year & 3 months later! & I have my pump! Good thing I didn't hold my breath! Anyhows, got all the goodies back together again,& got a good deal done yesterday. She's not going to look just like the 1:1,But close enough for me. So here's what I've got so far. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4663.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4664.jpg Of coarse, front axle has to be able to pivot. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4666.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4675.jpg Now the rear frame. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4676.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4668.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4669.jpg Wanted to make the hood nice & narrow like the 1:1,But ain't no way all of this is gunna fit in it. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4674.jpg Turns out,the drive line is no walk in the park. Had to git tricky with the parts to fit it in. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4678.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4680.jpg Don't know if I'm gunna stick w/these tires. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4673.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4671.jpg They bite real good, but don't know if they look ok. Wachya think? Thanks for lookin! FGD |
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
By the time you get all 4 wheels on it, it will look GREAT! Where are you going to hide the hyd. pump?? Looks like it is going to be too long to fit in anywhere.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
FGD, that is a nice piece you got going on there. You are right about the expensive JD..... that was a collectors piece, but it looks nice sitting atop the skidder.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
that will be massive!
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
FGD, Your Skidder is looking good, its going to take some planning to get all the componets in the limited space, you may wake up in the middle of the night a few times before its done but its going to be worth it. What scale are you building to? Keep us posted, love those skidders!! Fred

Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
FGD-very nice start! What tractor did you use ?
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Great start FGD, I am starting to think you have half a dozen employees working for you. I can't keep up with all your builds... LoL

Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Dang-it Freddy! I was hoping to have an only build that one of the experts hadn't had a crack at yet! Now you're gonna be done before me! It's lookin' good! The cab is super nice. I started out trying to use diff's but they were to wide for the scale and the power-train to them was gonna be years in the making for me if not impossible. I'm sure this will be another home run.

Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Real good start Freddy, it should be awsome when complete. Where did you get the tires in the bowl?

Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
looks good fred!!!!

Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Wow! Thanks Guys! You Boys have more faith in this, than I do.:D
Tc1,that little pump will be a lot smaller when it goes in this baby. Fred, you ain't kiddin, this is gunna take some do'in before it's draggin trees. That's if it don't go out the window first. Greg, you might be thinking of Travis w/his elfs. I'm a one man band!:D I just have a lot of crap riped apart at once,so looks like I'm gittin something done. Ben,after spending 3 hrs tryin to make what I wanted to use work.Decided to go w/these. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4692.jpg Just look at all the room I'm saving. I'll bet she'll really throw some dirt w/these babies in er:D Not really!:D & thanks for hav'in faith in this turnin out! It sure ain't gunna look as good as Iron arts.:( I'll be happy if it works & don't look like it came out of junk yard wars. DP/9,those tires & rims come w/these axles. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4684.jpg Purchased about 4 years ago from Pmd. After a couple hrs of tryin diff trany & motor combos, this is what I did. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4682.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4681.jpg Gunna have to make a cover & try to hide it w/cylinders & mounts,This baby needs to be slow & strong! But,yet fast. & this is the best of those worlds that I could dig out of my bone yard. Then the drive shaft. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4689.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4688.jpg Top center pivot. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4691.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4690.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4694.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4697.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4695.jpg Thanks for lookin! Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
looks awsome!!!! i like those axels i nee a set for my scraper looks like they could hold the weight and still pull can they still be found?
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Nice start! At this pace you'll be done in no time. Love that cab. I have an old 1/16 John Deere skidder (2 actually, one for parts) but the cab is open, plastic and lacks detail. Are you going to do a line or grapple skidder? I see two sets of cylinders - one for the blade and one for steering.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Td9clyde,Tryed to get another set,& no luck. Guess these were sittin around.
Vanisle, going for the grapple look. Well drive shafts & steering are in. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4699.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4702.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4704.jpg Had to slide two tires on it just to git a look. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4708.jpg I'm not diggin the motor set up,but hopefully can hide most of it w/cylinder mounts & cover. Might wind up scrappin that set up,& going w/something else. Or just finish it & see how it looks. If it looks like shyt,I'll gut it & try again. Thanks for lookin! FGD Anyone have any suggestions on how to cut the back of the cab? & not make a mess of it. I gave up on the torch idea. |
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
thats looking great fred what is the cab made of
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Is it diecast? And how much do you need to cut out? I have something in mind but need to more info.

Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
FGD The skidder looks great and can hardly wait to it finished. I've had good luck with a Dremel tool with a slitting disk. Just go real slow and it won't even burn the paint. Takes a real steady hand and you'll get good results.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
What do you need to cut out? An endmill makes a nice cut. I'd be happy to cut it for you on my mill ... but there's that shipping and time thing that doesn't really make it practical.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
wow that's one nice cab your got there you could make up a fake winch to hide your motor. some grapple have both you know i think it would look ok.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
great start, can't wait to see more. everything looks great
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
That is coming along great Freddy nice work.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Thanks Guys!
I think I might go w/Mr dremel cuttin wheel. Not sure how much I'm going to have to remove yet. Once all the crap is in,I'll know how much to wack by the looks of it. The cab is made out of cast alum. Found a home for one of the spool valves. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4712.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4711.jpg This is basically how the pump & batteries are going, except for one will be on top of the other, also on an angle due to hood angles. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4710.jpg Also shortend the pump tank. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4713.jpg This I don't believe it! Only took two shots at nose piece to git it right. BUT! The hood I got on the first shot :D:D:D:D http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4719.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4716.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4717.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...mppics4718.jpg Can't wait to git the plow to go up & down. Now I've got to git fancy w/lift arms & levers, cause the lift cylinder is no where close to where it needs to be.For a simple deal. Thanks for lookin! FGD |
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Awesome pops!!!! That thing is gonna be a beast!!
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Freddy, the rate your going it should be done around midnight, nice work. You'll have a lot better luck running the cylinders down each side of the nose or frame of it.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
not tryin to hyjack but that D7 E looks alot like the old terex design with the one cylinder and sloped front end but that would be a cool model to build too
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Freddy I like it alot...Having that cab is gona save alot of detailing and its gona look great
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Freddy, I can't wait to see this one in action. That cab looks awesome! This is going to be one serious skidder!
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!

Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Great build Fred! I didn't even see this until today. Never knew you were working on it. Are you aiming to build a replica of a specific 1:1 machine, or one that is a good shoe-in for a variety of JD skidders? So far so good! Looking forward to the updates as they come.
|
Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
yea it is still a cool machine new dust or old dust doesn't matter to me lol

Re: Year old money pit, soon to be a skidder.I HOPE!
Well now! Back in the saddle again!
First off I guess I'll say thank you for the nice complements. Finally got the parts I need to finish this baby! EXCEPT for the rims??;) Well.......turns out,the wait was for the best.:D Now there's a 3 spool in the front of this baby instead of a 2 spool. Decided to go the bigger buck,& do er up right! http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...ckPics1110.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...ckPics1114.jpg Now the blade will be hydraulic, was gunna go w/servo or screw drive. But space is at a high cost right now. Turns out,the cab interior had to go bye-bye. Can't run all of this on one pack. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...ckPics1113.jpg Also gave the cab the skidder look at the back of it. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...ckPics1108.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...ckPics1109.jpg Now there's a ton of room for ole-mr pumpy. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...ckPics1112.jpg Also found a nice place to put the speed controller. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...ckPics1111.jpg Well....Thanks for lookin! All ball bustin will be takin at par!:p FGD |
