Biggus' Rat Rod King
Dunno why but just loved the idea of this and I havent seen one done (although no doubt someone here has done). I acquired another King Hauler shell and other bits n bobs and today started on the body.
Started off with this.. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps466dd45f.jpg So off with the sleeper.. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps94990a27.jpg Then off with the wheelarches http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps589e7a83.jpg Now for a roof chop, figured easiest way is to go with the width of masking tape to ensure I got it the same all way round.. and to be honest its worked out really well, not too much in the way of any gaps. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8d0264a3.jpg http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...pscf913ae1.jpg http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...psd159d6c5.jpg Now I was going to mod the roof to fit the truck body which would mean cutting it in half and adding a piece but looking at it I figured that shortening the door by 5mm would be much easier which I have now done. This is a general idea of layout I plan for.. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5e4940f6.jpg |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
That will look a lot like the pissed off Pete hotrod buold by blastolene customs which is now owned by Jay Leno. It's an old needle nose Pete hotrod powered by a built up Detroit.

Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Yeh got photos of that on my phone, that Im taking inspiration from, amongst others.
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
This is going to be a nice project can't wait to see this progress . Very cool I love hotrods and a hotrod truck way cool .

Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
that's gonna be a challenging but awesome build cant wait to see it on a frame
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Bit done on the chassis, not running any rear suspension so was easy enough to make a bracket to bolt axle on.
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...psaac73d14.jpg Sat the shell on, which has now been stripped of paint and some filler put on. Still loads to do! http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...psd5485001.jpg |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King

Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King

Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Neat looking build! Actually it already has a rat rod look, with cab and hood having some stripped and faded color on them, along with some body filler. Are you going paint it primer grey, flat black, or something like that? This will be a fun build to watch.

@Scalepaintn I have been messing about with various metal tubes for exhausts, nothing has seemed right yet. Floorpan/body mount is done now and added a back piece tonight, just attacking it with more filler. Made some headlights for it from highlift spotlights. And thanks Paul |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
looks real good!

Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Front axle arrived today, bought it as it was a cheaper option than a Tamiya one with all the knuckles etc and am very happy with it the finish and work on it is superb. Just mounted at moment with a pair of leaf springs but i think i will be fitting some links under the chassis too.
http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...psf6a96bfc.jpg http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...psb8656d21.jpg Front wheels are standard King Hauler but inner bead cut off so that the Tamiya Buggy Champ fronts arent too stretched. I have also fitted a HPI wheelyking crawler inline reduction gearbox with a 55t motor. Standard King Hauler Body mounts have been fitted too so the body is secure to chassis now. |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King

Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Thanks, really enjoying this one and seriously now looking at trying to sort a rusty/worn paint look for it.. along with shiny chrome.
Been working trying to get rid of all the joins etc I have put in. Starting to get there now, picked up a set of fenders for it and some nice shiny stacks. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...s67152b72.jpeg |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
sweet!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Way cool
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
I like how you stretch the front tires over the rims for a little bit of a low profile look. Is it going to have just one stack?
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Lovin this one, nice job.
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Wowzers!! now ya just need the right rims/tires!
|

|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Thanks all, a little more done...
I have now got the bed sorted along with a fuel tank my mate has done on his lathe. The rear lights are the original marker lights from roof. http://www.tcphotos.com/pc_userimage...13212430_1.jpg http://www.tcphotos.com/pc_userimage...13212430_2.jpg http://www.tcphotos.com/pc_userimage...13212430_3.jpg That's it for now until the shell comes back from paint... this isn't a Rat rod anymore just a Rod :) |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
thats truely sick!!! great job cant wait to see more pics!!
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
That's really nice!
Reminds me a 1:1 build. I met the owner in his home garage, and he told me how the build started and all. The engine is a M-B found in a tree harverster. The the https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...8140976&type=1 He also had another rat rod that has a Harley Davidson and Jack Daniels theme. It had a barrel in the back for the fuel just like your R/C. |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
That bed and fuel tank looks great, I hope you decide to keep the polished full fenders also. They will look sweet with that wooden bed.
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Sweet fuel tank! Is the filler cap a thumb screw or something? Looks kind of like it, but I need some fuel filler caps for my own tanks and am looking for ideas. I like the wooden bed you've built for it too.
|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
The filler cap is one I got from PMD (garden trucking), Im really happy with fuel tank too, there is detail on the side that you cant really see.
Paint is finished, the wrap hasn't worked really well but it adds to the effect want to get a logo made up for the side but not sure what.. thinking of the name for it being "deadbeat" in line with all the skulls. http://www.tcphotos.com/pc_userimage...13232420_1.jpg http://www.tcphotos.com/pc_userimage...13232420_2.jpg http://www.tcphotos.com/pc_userimage...13232420_3.jpg http://www.tcphotos.com/pc_userimage...13232420_4.jpg The colour is a green, gold, copper flip. Doesn't show well in the photos. |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
How about a mean looking rat?
Cheers, Neil. |
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King

|
Re: Biggus' Rat Rod King
Any ideas for a grill? I am working on a small 4 cylinder engine for mine I not planning on running this one on fuel but maybe the next it I learn how to control the fuel delivery better if you want pics ill show you. You could have it run off drive shaft turn the crank an spin a mean looking fan.
