T880 - Izzy style???
Got the bug to build another truck. Spent a good bit of time reviewing pics as I usually do.
This build is going to be a good stretch of my abilities - especially the fenders - they are a lot different than most of our models - so I think that part will be hardest. First I'll post some pics of the truck - especially those I like. BTW - notice in the last 2 photos - it appears that the mnf. is using mostly CAD generated design images for their advertising..... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps76cba8ab.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psf82d182d.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps6871b677.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps42bbcfad.jpg |
Re: T880 - Izzy style???

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
This is my favorite 2014 truck coming out right now, and to see someone like you decide to build one is going to be suh-weet! Are you going to keep it heavy haul? :D

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
OK ill be watching this one

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
this is gonna be good!
|
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
I'm a big fan of these trucks too! I like the combination of sharp and smooth lines. Looking forward to the build!

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Looks like a fun, but challenging project! The photos of the orange truck are so photo shopped, it's not even funny! Or is it just me?

computer generated image. Hopefully Kenworth will have some in Vegas, March 4-8 2014, Con Expo Con Ag show. Bring it on! Let the build begin :bounce: Cheer's, Neil. |
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Photo shopped, computer generated.....it just didn't look natural to me!
|
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Correct - I think they designed the truck in a CAD system then used those images to sell the management and used them to the public. It's kinda funy to have a nice beefy heavy stance front but plain road tire drives. Maybe it's just the style of the floats up front??
I 'm not sure about the heavy or not - I think it's termed as a fleet truck for heavy use applications. I have a line on dump boxes - maybe I can blend the projects? |
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
This will be a cool truck Izzy!:)

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Lots of pictures Izzy please...

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
i think i remember another build where they used a pvc pipe reducer to make fenders similar to that, forget the builder though, sorry

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
This should be a great build.

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
first - after studying the truck pics and trying to find pics of the truck kits without all the shiny bits I settled on an Aeromax kit. You might think Im nuts but I think they are pretty close resemblences .......
SO got the kit started assembling the basic major components. Axels, front axel, transmission mounted the cab. Then popped up the trusty PC and printed pic after pic of the orange truck front and side views (hard to find - had to settle on a 1:1 rear ytuck in profile) until I had the door height about same relative size. Then started cutting on the cab - determined that the aero has more upper curve (facing straight on) so decided to start there. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psf318c746.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psc9430c9c.jpg also decided that the "cut in" at the door front to the cab was too severe so I lessened that - also helped square up the cab http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psd58cf916.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps42232579.jpg The cuts allowed me to flex the upper door and A piller up straight. I measured and made a thin inner panel to cap off the Cab - made sure this squared up the cab at the back as I wanted and glued it in. Then mounted a pice running like it's under the dash to hold the front of the cab close. Notice that I left the sleeper attached - it helped hold the cab nice and square so it didn't flex out of shape when I was flexing and such. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps8a0a0130.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps544a4b65.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps76c2e680.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psb9f68e05.jpg The top of the CAB is two colors - I had picked up a salvaged cab some months ago - had been thinking about doing a sterling. But since the top is now larger I need more roof pieces. Rather than just cutting down the center I cut along each side. The cut out the donor cab in the same way. Then I measured and sandwiched the two cab pieces together and cut down the middle - using just over half of each cab roof section. Then match the lines and trimmed pieces to fit. |
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Faster, faster.

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Izzy You do think out side the box... I would have never though to start with a Ford... Keep the pictures coming..

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Whew.....you're a lot braver than I am, Izzy! I don't think I would ever attempt to cut up a brand new cab to make something else out of it. So far so good! I can really see the difference with you taking out the arc of the Aeromax cab.

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Looking good !! Keep the pics coming :D:D
|
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
This is going to be good! Can't wait to see how the cab and hood come together!
|
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Wow that's awesome! I never would have thought about starting with a ford. If you go to www.truckpaper.com there are some pretty decent photos of the T880. Look under conventionals without sleepers.

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
SO - something I left out earlier - - I had to set the cab about 5 times - and move the front axel. It was all in order to find the right relationship between the frame, the motor and the cab, see below for the end result.

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Izzy great build cannot wate to see it done
|
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
For those interested - the bell cranks are for some other kit - found them on E-Bay. Double ball bearing all aluminum with a steel shaft and set screws on flats - they come as a pair for 1 truck. A little big but I think it turned out great. And only 30 some bucks plus a little for shipping for the pair!

Re: T880 - Izzy style???

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Thanks for the links Izzy, I was on that site for about 2 hours, ran some searches which I'm terrible at. I only found a few of the the cab parts, not sure why it didn't show all of them!
|
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
That was what I thought when I 1st saw a Cat trk, they look like a FORD! :D
You're doing a bang up job already Izzy. |
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Looking killer so far Izzy!!! This is gonna look sweet when done! I like how you mounted the motor! Perfect for a day cab!
|
Re: T880 - Izzy style???
I had the integy gearbox machined so that the motor would be turned backwards. I don't think I'm the first on this.

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Back from vacation - and waiting for shape ways order - I'll post pics then. Spent time yesterday hooking up receiver and adjusting linkages for steering and shirt. my test run found that I had the pinion in wrong location and was getting a chunking noise (set screw hitting teeth..... so simple adjust and go forward - except I had to dig the tranny out to do it. But in all everything is settled now and ready to get back to the body work. I am anxious for the shape ways order - I ordered a hood clip and the headlight covers. This is True Scales design - but do understand it is for a peterbilt style not the t880 - so we have to see how clos it is - I think it has aspects the ford does not. For instance I don't like how square the side profile of the fenders on the aero are - whereas the peterbilt and the t880 are rounded.

Re: T880 - Izzy style???
Good to hear you got it running!
are you using the metal gears in the trans? if so do you like them? |
