Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
The idea of this project has been in the works for a couple of years but I finally got the go ahead on it a few months back. There are two cabs being built at the moment but one is going to Lou and he will finish it as he sees fit. The other cab is where my first major customer build starts. I will be building a scale(ish) model of a 1959 Hayes HD that was bought new buy my customers father. The truck was replaced and sold off many, many years ago and was long thought to be lost. It was stumbled upon a few years ago and the original family bought it back. It is now being restored to original condition as a tribute truck to my customers father. I hope to do the mini version justice so that it can sit proudly next to it's 1:1 brother!
Here's what I built today... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3bd570bd.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1402db1d.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps13694701.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb7776d37.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd9f76a4b.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd9ee3006.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psfa618dc4.jpg Thanks for looking. |

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks guys. It's going to be a dump truck Wayne. It will look similar to the red one I built for myself but have a different box design, lift mechanism and color.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
You dont mess around do you ! Every time i look at your Hayes truck it takes me back to when i was 5 and my dad took me to the Hayes plant in Vancouver and i sat in a similar truck . Thats where it all started for me .

Going to the Hayes plant would have been cool! Building this sort of stuff reminds me of when I was younger as well. Life was much less complicated back then that's for sure... |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
In the early 70's i made several trips to Hayes as my dad knew one of the big wigs there and i collected all sorts of things from caps, stickers, patches, brochures, even a tape measure. Sadly all im left with today is the hat and the tape measure. I bet nobodys ever seen an original Hayes tape measure. Those were good days .

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
I haven't devoted much time to this over the past couple of months but with a springtime completion date looming I have been putting around on it the last bit. I haven't made much progress but eventually I will get there with it. I started making some Budd wheels for it. I have a lot of machining left to do on these obviously but at least it's a start. I have spent a bit of time making jigs and dies so that if I want to make them again it's not such a pain. The wheels I made for my Hayes turned out OK but the dies sucked. Hopefully time spent now will pay off later down the road...

Wheels look killer! Always enjoy your posts :D

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
:jaw::jaw::jaw: very nice work
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Holy crap man.. Haha your builds are ridiculous!
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Yeah what he said!!! Did you make the dies from just regular laying around steel? Doing some real professional looking stuff!!! And I wish I would spend the time making better jigs and better drawings as it's made me realize one offs sometimes isn't enough !! Keep up the killer work bro!!!

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks guys. I am back in the shop today so hopefully I can make some more progress. RW, the dies are just 6061 alum. I made the original "punch" from IMPAX steel(stub left over from re-pinning my mini ex) but this time around I just used aluminum because I could machine it on my mini lathe. I think the aluminum will be OK as I don't plan to build a lot of these. If I were going into production though I would definitely make both sides from steel even if it wasn't IMPAX. I am still not 100% happy with the profile but I will wait to make my final decision on them until I finish the machining on one. I made end up changing the dies again and making new centers.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
A tiny bit of progress after hours of work.lol There is a reason people that build and sell wheels have CNC machinery. I would say that I am about halfway on these wheels after two full days. Next up will be machining the beads(not the kind Mario uses:p) and then I will do some more work on the hubs to make them look more realistic. I have started making my own axle housings(Rockwell 4640) for this but I am unsure at this point if i will use them. Once I decide what I am doing with that I will either cross drill the hubs for a set screw and a blind axle hole or machine a hex into the back for the stock axles, drilling right through and using a cap on the hub.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Simply AMAZING!!! Money will buy all the tools needed for a project like this, but the skill and talent you have is priceless!!! Definitly be watching these builds.

Almost past this thread by :eek: Glad I took the time to look at it. Reg, Your skills went past mine on this one. Between the welding and now your die making ability, I feel like I am in grade school again compared to you. :jaw: Took me awhile to figure out how you made the holes in the center pieces. All I can say is " OUTSTANDING!!!"

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Great work! The wheels look great.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Well, all my hubs are roughed in finally! I threaded the 10, 1-72 holes in one front hub and mounted up a wheel for a test fit. I am somewhat happy!(rare:mad:) The don't look 100% correct but I do like how they look:). Once I have everything machined the way I like I will make the dust covers for the front hubs.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Just so ya know.....I'm still buying lottery tickets so I can win and move in next door eh? So make sure that property doesn't sell ;)
And enough about the beads! :D Don't make me come out there and bead it out of you! |

Oh, and yeah... No more comments about the beads...:p |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Those are some great looking wheels. This is going to be a great truck, I always liked the old Hayes, they were pure work trucks.
Nice Job, Chris |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
My 1st steel wheels I made for myself where stamped much like what you are doing . I just didn't have a mill at the time :( ( well I had a hand held 1 :p ) . I tried tac welding them together , didn't turn out too well :( but got me into this mess I'm in now :p . The best thing out of it, Is the cool toys I have to werk with now :bounce:

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Some jewelery pics. I am finally getting down to it with these hubs....
Here's a picture of my poor mans powered 4 axis.lol It actually works fairly well and knocks the machining time down to about two minutes per bead. Certainly beats turning that handle thousands of times by hand! http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psf59b5728.jpg And the goodies... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pseb03b117.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psf2e43f30.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps39378af0.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psf8bde71d.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0bda8e32.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd5c666fb.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3947c607.jpg |
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Beautiful job, i wouldn't expect anything less
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
I have to agree, "WONDERFUL JOB". 1 question for you, What is the wall thickness of the rim at the grooves? Would really like to see these in person  They do look amazing. Are my eyes playing tricks on me or do the centers have an angle on the main body?
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks guys. I'm not sure what the wall thickness is. I know the grooves are 2mm deep so I am guessing it's around 1mm thick. Yes the hubs are tapered a little.
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Thanks for the quick answers! Another ?? for you- Why didn't you turn the grooves in the wheels instead of milling them? I know, I know, lots of silly ?'s but this is the way you learn things :D:D

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
Your way of machining the grooves is not wrong. Just another way of doing it. I normally use WD40 or a cutting/tapping fluid for coolant. Never thought about using alcohol. Would not be as messy!!
|
Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II
That's an intresting way to make wheels. Read the tread twice but could not find how you made those oval holes. How did you fasten the discs to the tubing??
Didn't realy follow why it was not possible to turning them in lahte. The grooves could be done before pressing the disc inside, that way you will not ruin the hole wheel, just a thought :) Dan |
