Carson L634
634 arrived today. So I inventoried the parts and extras. Happily, the metal tracks fit perfectly on the sprocket;)

Re: Carson L634
Congrats! Now that you have fitted and trimmed the metal tracks, can I have them and you can get your self another set:eek::D... JK. Can't wait to see your build.

Re: Carson L634
Wow, that's great news. We're going to have a lot of these track loader build threads to keep us entertained and jealous! Looking forward to seeing more Mitch. What color are you thinking? I hope somebody does one in fire red colors.

Jury is still out as to wether the tracks will function well. I'll let you know. MM:rolleyes: |
Re: Carson L634
Looking good Mitch. Permacon told me the tracks would not work with the stock drive sprocket, but so far it looks like it does. Come on, where are the rest of your photos? I want to see what other goodies you have in store for this thing!
|
Re: Carson L634
The tracks fit the sprocket . However, the metal tracks are 52mm wide and the plastic tracks are 42mm wide. Therefore, they are too wide to fit, so the next endeavor is to cut 5mm per side per individual track. That's 160 cuts.
|
Re: Carson L634
Could you move the track side frames out, widening the whole under carriage? I know that probably wouldn't be any easier than making 160 cuts but you would be able to keep it a wide track.
|
Re: Carson L634
Why not build a jig and clamp the tracks down, fully assembled and just make 2 cuts, per track?????
Cheers, Neil |
Re: Carson L634
That is currently the idea. Did a couple practice cuts with a spare track I ordered. The metal cuts nicely with a cut off wheel. Think it will also work with a band saw. Need to make a fixture ! Any ideas are appreciated.;)

Re: Carson L634
Benchtop milling machine? Clamp the tracks on edge, vertically, and you could probably mill as many sections as your vise is wide. I wouldn't even worry about disassembling the links.
Any idea what a completed set of tracks weigh? I'm just wondering how much extra weight these would add to a LR634. |

Re: Carson L634
Mockup complete! Took your advice and milled the tracks. Came out fine. Also, the metal track application requires a change of bottom rollers (Top rollers are good). I made some extras for my "Wide Track" dozer ( exactly 12). They are about 2mm smaller, but work none the less. I also added a bottom plate for additional weight. Havn't got a scale, but I'm guessing it all adds up to around 4- 6 lbs. I plan to use fiberglass resin, and place No. 9 Birdshot into the Cab recesses, this should add a little more weight. :);)

Re: Carson L634
Oh boy, I like those tracks! Going for the John Deere 755D, I see? Looks like you have one track pin that isn't quite in place. The e-clip must of popped off? :D Good idea on the added ballast. I might have to borrow that idea!

Re: Carson L634
As you can see the stock bottom rollers ride on top of track, and will not work. The top rollers would work if you could get twelve of them (probably not). However, if one of our friends in Germany could check with Carson that might help. I tried, but no contact on the subject.

Re: Carson L634
Mitch you are doing the non-hydraulic ripper? That surprises me. Your building is looking very Precision so far!
|
Re: Carson L634
Just waiting for the hydraulics to arrive. Thought I would make sure it all fitt.

Re: Carson L634
wow i bet that was not cheap with the machine as well as these parts
|
Re: Carson L634
Nice progress Mitch! I take it that is a powder coated finish, on the main chassis and track frames? Do you powder coat things yourself, or hire someone?
|
Re: Carson L634
So did Premacon cut you a deal for buying 160 track links ? And great build so far, can't wait to see some video of it digging some dirt !
|
Re: Carson L634
Looks great Mitch! Keep the photos coming.
|
Re: Carson L634
Powder coating was done by me at home. No deals w/Premacon on any of the items. In addition, I had to pay a machine shop (90 USD) to mill the tracks to proper width. BTW, powder coating is a little messy but you get a nice durable product.

Re: Carson L634
Man that bottom weight block is an awesome idea. I might have to copy you ( if not trade marked :) ) or if you make them your self I'd buy one from you. Everything looks fantastic Mitch !!

Re: Carson L634
Came across a few web sites you guys with the L634 might be interested in. I know its a little too late for Mitch but they have the factory track rollers , main track drive sprocket , replacement plastic track and a few other things.

Re: Carson L634
Looking great Mitch! Now that I see they have metal ripper shanks available, I think I'm going to look into getting a ripper a little more seriously!
|
Re: Carson L634
Tried to order the metal shanks from AFV as recommended, but was unable to work through problems with their website. This has been a recurrent theme. Has anyone else had success with ordering from AFV? I had no problems last time (year ago).

Looking good!
|
Re: Carson L634
True work of art. The upgrades you have done are so nice, taken a nice model to a whole nother level.
|
Re: Carson L634
Looking sharp ! Did you ever have any luck getting the ripper shanks from AFV ?
|
Re: Carson L634
Metal Ripper shanks required a little trimming to make them fit. They appeared to be made of Brass. Thanks for the comments;)
