Does any one know where to find metal for the Telescoping Boom?

Aluminum Square would work also.

Check the K&S site. You will no doubt have to machine one down to fit inside another unless you can install nylon bushings to tighten them up.

i would make shere that i would use some thing like nylon as 9W said. if you have aluminum on aluminum it will gull up in no time flat a steel one and aluminum core would work fine but aluminum dose not like rubbing on it self and you will be stuck with a big mess in not time i found this out the hard way. i eavin whent as far as too try lube like graphit spary and just about evey thing els i could think of steel on steel works the best that what some of the real picker use.

If you can anodize the aluminum parts they would slide better. But not real well for very long unless it was a hard coat,meaning the temperature of the water it was anodized in and length of time. (don't mind me I was just rambling):D

You may be able to add small rollers on each end ...I would check your local metal recycling depot..Some will have an area that you can shop in ...I find very many and different profiles there and at scrap prices

Well with help, have found telescoping boom, wheels, and how to mount crane to chassis.

Now need how to raise boom, no hydro way.

Found motors for swing, and winch. Also for boom extension.

Ken , Are you going to make this a build thread ? If so do tell so we can move it to where it belongs :) it is in the wrong place if it is . it'll be great to see more crane builds :)

Well I layied the Keel Sorry I have built to many RC ships. I meant Chassis to day.
Aluminum deck, will have Aluminum Crane.
So will slowly start working on other parts.
Found Telescoping boon, still no wheels, need to be small hub, 4 1/2 in tires.

Will be using Chaseracer's system to raise the boom, just motor on other side.
If it works will share. LOL

wheels from du-bro. Big Wheels, smooth inflatable with positive seal air valves , plus rim has 5 bolts look.
Hope they work.
hard to find race car tires that are 4".

Was looking at the winches they use on 4x4 jeeps.
Or just make one up.

I would think about using servos modified for continuous rotation. All you have to do is plug them into your receiver and they will operate just like a hydraulic winch. Modifying them is easy, but I'm not sure if you can modify all of them. Metal gears are good and double ball bearings are a must. I think Smallhaul or Stuff knows where to get servos already set up for continuous rotation.

To chose a servo, just figure out how much weight in ounces you want the winch to pull, then multiply that by the radius of the core of your winch drum and that will give you the inch/ounces of torque required and then chose a servo that has at least double the torque (a little is good, a lot is better) so you don't burn it up. If you want to lift 320 ounces (20 lbs) with a four-part line, then you need a line pull of 80 ounces. So, if your drum core is .75" diameter, the radius is .375"; then 80 X .375 = 30 in/oz required so you need a servo capable of at least 60 in/oz.

And to make sure it has the right speed, take the time/60 degree rotation spec and multiply by six and then divide 60 by that number to get rpms. If a servo has a .18 second for 60 degree rotation, then .18 X 6 = 1.08 seconds per revolution. 60 divided by 1.08 = 55.55 rpms. Since the drum core has a diameter of 3/4 inch, the circumference is 2.35". 55.55 rpms X 2.35" circumference = 130 inches/minute of line speed.

You probably already know how to do the math, but if anyone else wants to know, that's how I do it.

well i figger out my boom for my crane and it truns out you can get steel tube from any local steel place. if you get .100 squar tubing it works great. but that might be too heavy for your crane. 1 1/2 goes in to 1-1/4-1-3/. 3/4 come's in .065 wall so your will have to shim the 1/2 if if you need that size. good luck

Hi Mog, found the SQ tube, in All.
Also now know how to extend boon together like the real ones.
Made a wood model, used the Liebherr way on their home page.

OK found tires/wheels, found boom, working on boon mechanizes for raising boom.

Still meed to get two more tires/wheels (on order) for back, and motors to drive them.

I now know how to make the boom sections work, made it Out of wood to make sure. Will work like the real one.

Should have photos soon.

Now need to find a sound system, so when lifting something I get the sound, any input??
Just crane sound running, then speed up when raising boom, or lifting.

Have boom lifting cylinder almost, still need a good motor, any USA store and what size to get?
