Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Everybody does Custom & Show trucks, but in the real world i see a whole lot more stock and Fleet equipment out doing things.
Nylint 1975+ Chevrolet squarebody U-HAUL Maxi-mover. First teaser pic when i brought back a 1950 Woody wagon from Florida https://imgur.com/DE47gIgh.jpg I still don't see a change between any 'rounded line' square-body Chevy or Gmc truck, but people will claim there are very many differences! (The paint stores sell 57,000,000 shades of white, so sure why not?) Chevy squarebody grilles by year https://www.cjponyparts.com/resource...fication-guide I guess Nylint chevy pickup uses close to a 1973-74 grille. Then a gm 4wd truck with a 1 ton carrying frame is a K-30. I can't find anything about uhaul actually running this cab with that box, but it looks pretty cool. https://imgur.com/8sNClCrh.jpg The first step of RC Conversion is buy more rolling stock??? https://imgur.com/f2t999mh.jpg Then might as well repaint the cab closer to the actual Uhaul livery, but do it 'Fleet style' so that every section of white is a different color. "The boss just said White paint, i dunno." Chopped some steel square tube into a pair of C-channels to become chassis rails. Got a pile of aftermarket wpl metal crossmembers, gearmotor trans, leaf springs, and some chassis rails mocked up to start planning holes in the Loooong frame. Pro tip: Always remember to leave your nylock hardware loose so you can drop parts into the abyss! Then you get to reorder kits and pretend your original plan was to 'millitary wrap' the main leafs before you start adding helper leafs. https://imgur.com/nj1AF3nh.jpg WPL / JJRC running gear, axles, D12 steelies. I want to stick with open-differentials to help with turning radius so i can still fail massively with backing trailers. Steel stretched frame under a steel body, with useable payload, it's going to need ALL of the springs. Planning on using at least 1 frame mounted carrier bearing with the metal cvd driveshafts to reach from trans to rear differential https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gadg...ong-wheelbases Trailer options? Dollhouse furnature? Rental Center? |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Side-quest while waiting on parts:
Back on the Farm, there's still the old Ford (nylint happy rancher) truck "with the tree growing through it". https://i.imgur.com/KhCd0fPh.jpg Badly rust pitted, some areas rusted through. I'd be forever filling and sanding on it to make something new, or even nice, but on a rental those aren't pits, they're dents... Ordered some parts & stickers, picked up a couple cans of paint... https://imgur.com/406i7pIh.jpg https://imgur.com/8hRXkifh.jpg Think that has freshened up the 1959 ford flatbed just a little, still need to get a bunch on scale lumber made up to do the stakebed parts so i can mount up the rest of the signs somewhere. I dunno, might as well try to build up my Uhaul Rental Fleet some, especially with a truck that wasn't actually ever made. https://www.tnttoytrucks.com/NYRent1.html -- Nylint produced many types of rolling stock for the rental trucks .... whitewall & hubcap wheels Orange 2 wheel Open trailer, round fender (rental fleet - ford pickup) Orange 2 wheel Box trailer, round fender (rental fleet - ford pickup) Orange 2 wheel Racecar hauler, round fender (race set - ford pickup / or roadster) Orange 2 wheel box trailer, no fender (econoline pickup / also "haul it" brand) .... white letter with mag wheels Orange 2 wheel Open trailer, square fender (multi mover - coe truck?) Orange 2 wheel Box trailer, square fender (mod mover - car?) Orange 4 wheel box trailer, square fender (Movin' mover - chevy blazer) Silver 2 wheel box trailer, square fender (Movin' duo - purple truck) Silver 4 wheel box trailer, square fender (Movin' trio - gmc jimmy) Blue 2 wheel boat trailer / red over white boat (Rv campin' combo - blue truck) Silver car-top carrier (Movin' trio - gmc jimmy) |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Had no idea there were classic uhaul toys. You guys find the craziest things.
Some balsa furniture would be awesome. A stack of moving boxes would be great to fill up the trucks. |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Yeah Blender, its pretty wild what kinds of stuff are out there!
Once i found out there were some 'construction scale' Uhaul trucks, the search was on. A couple years back my dad suprised me with the Maxi-mover, and i've been trying to source out some of the other accessories they made. Then also sarted looking at what the company rents which wasn't made as a toy, that could/should have been... I've been trying to decide if i should get the sticker set to redo the box orange stripe 'adventures in moving' part. Maybe look into some of the other uhaul stickers as easter-egg joke. Probably going to put dollhouse hinges with scale hardware on the rollup door sections. No lights, but using rinestones for the marker lights Planning a "sound kit" so it sounds like broken glass when hitting bumps. |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
LOL... There you go Frizzen.... "Call em the way you see em... If you didn't see em... make it up"
Those are going to look great... Is that the rusted up cab...it turned out really nice... Yeah Blender, there is a big collector segment for the Nylint U-haul toys... in any condition... |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
If you're looking at doing easter-egg-joke stickers; I always liked the joke: What is U-Haul called in Texas? Y'all-Haul.
|
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Now that was funny.
|
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
"A stack of moving boxes would be great to fill up the trucks." A color printer, some appropriately colored paper, and you can too can become a scale moving box supplier.

Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Yeah jerry, that flatbed is the same rusted truck after it rode the wire wheel + cab roof, windows, bumper, bunch of paint, the pickup train sticker set, flipped the whitewalls around to steelies and added some extra wheels to make it a dually. Since i already Ruint it, I even left the rust-through hole in the dash. I'm not Collector enough for my fake truck to get a set of the plastic bed stakes.
Sassgrunt, part of the push for this one was watching a guy build a uhaul minitruck as a "YeeHaul". That's right, come on down to Puddins Fab Shop today, rent this rig and Yee can Haul it yourself! Ddmckee, Dollhouse furnature and moving Boxes are absolutely on the list! I'll probably need to buy a bunch of boxes to get pics & scale them. I'm absolutely open to ideas of things to have this rig haul!!! |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
A rental flatbed truck could be hauling anything. Bags of stuff, cement, sand, fertilizer. etc. They aren't hard to make. Years ago one of the administrative assistants where I work had a small Zen rock garden on her desk. As a joke I made a stack of bags of Purina Rock Chow to feed her little rocks so they could grow up big and strong.
A little CAD work, a color printer, some glue, and a scrap of foam and you get something like this. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-gm?authuser=0 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw...-gm?authuser=0 |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
I got the idea for the Rock Chow bags from the Purina Lion Chow scene in "2nd Hand Lion."
The bags are about 1"x2"x1/4"-ish, and are modeled after the old style of paper bag that was sewn shut after it was filled. That leaves a little flap at the top of the bag. I printed out a few copies of my bag "blank" on one sheet of paper, cut them out, glued the seams, stuffed the foam in, then folded over the flap and glued it shut. They were so light I wound up gluing the stack of bags together - so they'd stay stacked. |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
DD, thanks for reposting those pics, those look really cool. That's pretty funny, i guess the Purina Rock Chow is probably a pretty good stone meal. I should do a bunch of something like that as pallet loads for the forklift.
At least for now, i was thinking the Stakebed would just be some scenery to sit around with the trailers not being pulled, if a rental center or gas station that rents were to happen. Maybe doing some mods to freewheel the axles so it can be towed around smoothly, if a car dolly or tow truck were to happen. |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Sorry about that, I had linked to an album that I wasn't sharing. I shared the album and redid the links. I could see the stuff, but nobody else could. See if they work for you now.
Yup, like I said bags of cement, sand, fertilizer, or whatever. Don |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
frizzen:
If you are modeling a modern pallet load you'll want to wrap the sides of the pallet with food wrap to simulate the stretch wrap used to stabilize the pallet load for transport. Cut a strip of plastic food wrap, either clear or green, about a scale 18" wide then wrap it around the pallet stretching it as you go. Overlap both the wooden pallet, and the top of the stack by a few scale inches and Bob's your uncle.... You've got an authentic stretch wrapped pallet. Slap a bar code sticker on it front and back, and it's ready for delivery to the nearest Walmart distribution center. (They're touchy about those barcode labels.) Don |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Dd, great tip on making cargo and shrink wrapping pallets. I'm probably going to need to knock out some more forklift stuff soon.
Paint on cab right didn't hold up as well, so i hadn't been showing off the Curb side. https://imgur.com/NcuNR5Lh.jpg It's likely going to keep most of the pressed 'original frame' to bolt to an 'rc frame'. Spring-under-axle with lowering blocks. "Millitary-wrapped" (doubled) main leaf, with a bunch of helper leafs. Then going to run a 2 or 3 piece rear driveshaft with carrier bearings. I'm still undecided on a servo and esc. I've noticed we need better axles under it before i get much farther, plastic axle-C already feels weak while just flexing. A couple weeks ago, I had asked a friend if they would be able to 3D print a couple items for this build. Too much life was happening, so instead they gave me a very "affordable" printer that had also been given to them. Now i have an Easythreed X1, to learn about, upgrade and whatever else. Some of the machines reviews help explain this price, so there is a lot of "Opportunity" there. It's PLA only, with lots of backlash, and fairly limited ability. Pooping Robot: aquired |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
You'll find that Plastic Pooping Robots are much like cats, you don't acquire them - they acquire YOU.
A 100x100x100mm print volume is not huge, but it will serve admirably for MOST RC truck doo-dads - other than frames and bodies. You WILL need to learn 3D CAD since not too many people are crazy enough to do the stuff that we want to do. You won't find STL files for most of the parts you want/need on-line. You'll most likely need to make your own. Don |

But still many are usable and good opportunity to learn about the capabilities of your new plastic pooping robotic cat troublemaker thingy. |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Haha! Yeah, i'd heard that about Pooping Robots aquiring people. The friend that gave me this one has 3 machines, my sister has 2, the guy who printed my dodge van chassis has a couple...
I know the 100mm cube isn't much, but there are some documented hacks for making each axis longer. Some swap in better motors, more frame support, better backlash tolerances, better nozzles, heated beds, more fans... This rig is priced where "add a power switch" is a mod, the board already has connector 'sw' that's just been factory jumpered ON all the time. Spared no expense! - After a couple of the preloaded Gcode things, i started with printing some upgrades. Filliment guides, spool rollers. Made a glass bed from broken picture frame to flatten the magnetic build tray up from warped plastic basal platten. Adjusted belt tensions They say it can print in: PLA , PLA+ Apparently even TPU if you shutoff parts cooling and set up like this https://youtu.be/JmeuciGMvb0?feature=shared |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Wait, now what have you got there?
https://imgur.com/u6q6D39h.jpg Ok, it's a rusted / repainted Nylint based on an old Stidham horse trailer? Yeah, i liked the movie "Llamageddon" and that style trailer was the "spacecraft" the killer llamas flew to earth. But, why? https://imgur.com/uE1OXPUh.jpg https://imgur.com/G3v8HYUh.jpg Oh no... https://imgur.com/vyik79eh.jpg Don't you have a Truck to build? |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
U-Haul actually rented stock trailers? Who-da-thunk-it?
|
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
I have lived and worked all over the country and I have never seen a U-Haul horse trailer. Any idea where those photos were taken? For the record, I absolutely hate U-Haul trailers. The wiring in them is always a complete rats nest and never works right.
|
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Zabco, i hadn't noticed them either, but i'm also not in horse country. i'll show my work
My phone won't show exif data on an image, so i don't know where it was taken. I found those trailer pics on Reddit, with a couple people saying not-fake, but old and very rarely used. Then while searching for more horse trailer info i found a total of 3 pics, all of the same trailer! (Fleet number 3666 SO 8133, which has a Georgia plate in a pic) That Georgia farm plate is odd since almost all of Uhaul fleet is plated to Arizona I mean is it weirder to go around taking pics of fleet vehicles to post on the internet, or weirder to paint your own outfit in a rental livery? Then several horse owner sites popped up mentioning 'renting a u-haul horse trailer' maybe it's a thing, could be the "All 'facial tissue' = Kleenex" thing, could be search engine optimization bs... Well, i still liked the idea and thought that seemed plausible as close enough to real to make a toy fake one? So working off the rental company "seems to have run a few of those", and that the toy company "could have produced those with existing parts" was close enough for my destructive tendencies. https://www.uhaul.com/FrequentlyAske...owing-Rentals/ Then since you asked, it looks like there are only 5 locations in California and New Mexico that have horse trailers available as of 2021? Third pic https://imgur.com/ci1c4Rih.jpg Don't worry instead of an inop rats nest of wiring, none these are even getting lights! Just some rhinestone reflectors. |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Tracking down where the actual horse trailers can be rented is awesome. I expect license plate and phone number of the branch on the finished trailer.
|
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Haha, yeah Blender i spent some time on that one... i mostly hack up old toys and do weird car things to make me smile, i don't really do "exact replicas". I haven't even figured out what model each trailer is trying to replicate. If gets people to notice and smile, it's usually close enough.
I may be neurodivergent , but not quite THAT flavor. Well, how about we fake something they DO commonly rent? https://imgur.com/NLfIQaWh.jpg It should get the shorter Uhaul tires once the chevy is mounted up on WPLs https://imgur.com/HFFInM4h.jpg Trashing a Boat Trailer would probably have been the better way to go for a car-dolly since it was production, and has the baby fenders. I haven't seen any of those go cheap, and I had a frame offcut from this rc and a fire ladder truck axle Uh, ok, but isn't there supposed to be "A Truck Build" going on? https://imgur.com/y0zmg1Th.jpg Some carrier bearing crossmembers are printed, with bearings, some body tab clearances got hacked into frame https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gadg...ong-wheelbases These use the same bearings as the axles |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
It was finally time to get the chassis moved off the mockup axles. Decided it needed some wpl 'potmetal' axles, and might as well get a set of brass Differentials instead of the steel Spools those come with. My thinking was that a Box truck probably needs turning radius more than 4 wheel traction or durability.
Get in the zone, Advance toy parts Oh oh oh, oh Napa. We didn't need liftgate service, so they were willing to send a parts-runner out to the garage. https://imgur.com/GMoGNiRh.jpg These brass Differentials felt crunchy, so i spent a while pushing inward on axles while rotating to help wear in the gears. I plan to run them for a while, then open to clean and lube. Everything needs to come apart for threadlock once it's more final anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem. To make up for the larger housings for spiders, these diffs come with a shorter pinion than used on wpl spools. --- I've been looking for a D-wheel dually conversion rim with the convex face. Chevy and GMC grille https://www.etsy.com/listing/1599115...original-style https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gadg...conversion-kit https://makerworld.com/en/models/374...42?from=search Rally wheel center in d12 structure https://youtu.be/l5PnA-2UCSM?feature=shared m2.5x20 hardware to stack wheels https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6174132 Squishy tire with d12 steelie profile wheel |
Re: Chevy K30 U-haul Maxi-mover 1973-75
Remade more carrier bearings, stabilize filled those with jb weld.
Modified the rc-frame and toy-frame to sit better. Modified the box and rc-frame to sit better. Modified the cab front mounts. Now i can pull the box off the truck and have a cutaway truck, so it could become a ramp-deck or something? Yo dawg, i heard ya like driveshafts! https://imgur.com/R0KRJLsh.jpg 3 piece rear drive, plus putting in a front make this a 'K' truck instead of a 'C'. You may have heard me say i want a lot of springs, but what i actually said is Bring Me All of Your Springs. Bad chrome is weird on fleet truck, but thought that front end still needed some more colors https://imgur.com/NK2bf5Dh.jpg But those diff pumpkins needed WAY less red! I'm still ok with red trans and knuckles though? So how's that ride height look compared to before YOU RUINED IT? https://imgur.com/NJtfGK0h.jpg I've been looking for a design of a 'Budd' style D12 dually rim for 2 of the d12 rubber tires, but no luck yet. All the duals seem to be for B or C truck tires. |
