Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Hello all. Thought i would share my build here. Hope you enjoy!
This is what im basing my model off of. Its a Century 1075s rotator.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...8LngSiQ_12.gif
Started with a stock aeromax and 30 inch rails
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_0014.jpg
Added lift axle
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_0021.jpg
Removed sleeper and filled in back of cab
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_0025.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_0097.jpg
Made my first wrecker body on my first atempt at styrene
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_0114.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_0115.jpg
Then the project went on hold for almost 2 years. Didnt have the time to mess with it...

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Once i got back to it a month ago or so i started building the base of the boom and working to figure that out. I picked this tank turrett unit up for rotation hoping its strong enough to do the job
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_0089.jpg
And my first attempt at the base was unsuccessful
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1006.jpg
Not strong enough
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1007.jpg
Then i went down to my snow plow buddies shop and got this bearing
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1010.jpg
And a one inch bolt i center drilled to hold all the wires in the middle of the rotation
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1013.jpg
This is overkill but i like to work that way! haha
Then i cut a piece of thicker aluminum to fit the gear and mounted it to the chassis
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1021.jpg
And it actually works haha. Surprised myself a little bit.
Then i started cutting and bending sheet metal to build the boom base.

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Once i got that together it was time to mount the winches which is where im at now on this build
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1086.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1087.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1088.jpg

Im hoping that the winches will be strong enough for this. Thats what i got so far.
I'll be ordering the aluminum tube in the next week or so to start fabricating the boom. Pics will follow as i get them. Thanks for looking!

Sweet build! Can't wait to see more!

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Very nice. those turret rotation motors are actually one of the better parts of th HL brand of RC tanks. Strong enough to brake the gun barrel off of the tank if it gets hung up. the only real draw back is you do need to use a bearing support base like you did for your application.

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

While waiting for the boom tube to come in i decided to try and keep some updates coming with what im working on. So today i was playing with some cosmetics while i wait.
Took the stock skirts and trimmed them
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1089.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1093.jpg
Cut some styrene to fill the gaps
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1092.jpg
And comensed gluing
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1095.jpg
And this is what i ended up with
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1096.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1094.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1098.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1097.jpg
Also worked out that i now have some space to hide a few of the many ESC's it will take to run this thing
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1099.jpg
More to come as it develops. I also have come up with a new theme and paint idea for this truck that i think will be awesome! Thanks for looking.

Thanks bigpipes!
As it would happen. My order of aluminum tube was "delivered" yesterday. Much to my surprise it wasnt here. Not sure where ups dropped the ball but im still tubeless. Called online metal store and mcmaster carr, online metal is sending another piece and mcmaster is calling ups to find out whats going on. A delay that im not happy about but hopefully i'll have some updates soon! Thanks for the patience

Thank you for showing the bearing, as I have trying to tell what I'm using as my base for my platform for my Liebherr LTM 1030.

Good job keep it up.

Just watch your credit card with mc master! I had parts missing, and the sobs billed me for the replacement parts. I haven't bought from them since.

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Just a small update. As the aluminum tube has arrived. Probably wont do anything on this until after the new year. My weekends are pretty busy until then.
Aluminum tube

Sitting on the truck
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1101.jpg
Just a mock up haha
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1102.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1103.jpg

Its going to be 3 sections as u can tell. They are 2 feet long but will be cut shorter when i go to build the boom. Thanks for looking!

Did a little cosmetic and functional things today.
First off i started the lift axle hoop. My soldering torch took a crap so i was only able to temp solder it in place but u get the idea
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1105.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1106.jpg
Then for cosmetics i put the exhaust on it. Modified stock stacks
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1107.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1108.jpg

Thats it for now. Let me know what u think!

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

It's really taking shape. The bearing you're using for the boom will certainly be up to the job! It's massive!

CustomClod 12-27-2011 07:44 PM

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Thanks snowman! If its not up to the job then something is really wrong! haha

Well finally did some more work and moving forward on the boom! Heres some pics
First a made a motor mount out of delrin
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1109.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1110.jpg
Got this assembly from a friend of mine (thank you) And put it together
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1112.jpg
Then i marked drilled the tube and drilled and tapped the delrin
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1113.jpg
Then inserted and bolted it together
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1111.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1114.jpg
I then cut the second section of boom and just mocked it up to see what im working with
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1117.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1118.jpg

Thats all for now. More to come soon. Let me know what u think! Thanks

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Thanks guys. I did some testing today and found that the little copal 60 motor has just enough power to move one section of boom very slow. Dont think its gonna have enough for 2 sections. Any suggestions for more power and speed motors in the same small size? Id like to try and stay away from 12v motors if possible. Thanks again
Scott

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Sorry to hear your having problems with the motor,I looked around on robotmarket place didn't see any over 50 to 70 oz of torque for the copal motor, what is the ID of the square tubing, would something like this motor work, may be to big though.Diameter is 21.8 mm ,works on 6v and 12v

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Thanks Cowboy!
Brian, yes the boom will telescope as u will see in this post!
Demond, we can arrange that for sure! haha
Ok did some work today and a good bit at that imo.
This is delrin drilled and tapped in the second section of boom that will telescope
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1119.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1130.jpg
The lamp rod (threaded rod with the center drilled out) Holds the motor on one end and has delrin in the other drilled and tapped to move the third boom stage
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1121.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1122.jpg
This is the third stage which is the final stage delrin tapped and jam nutted to make it move.

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

I then made a little test video after assembly. The boom still needs to be adjusted but im waiting for the new drive motor to arrive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9NuE...ature=youtu.be

Then i managed to drill and bolt the boom in place on the boom base and am finally starting to make some head way on this thing.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1127.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1128.jpg

Re: Aeromax Rotating Wrecker

Thanks everybody for the comments!
Well the new motor arrived and i installed it.
New and the old
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1136.jpg
Modified delrin
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1137.jpg
Installed in the tube
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...d/IMG_1138.jpg

Turns out i messed up in planning this boom. The second and third stage move at the same speed as you can see in the video put up earlier. I had planned on having one move faster then the other but i think im just gonna try and live with it for now. The new motor works like a champ and im very happy with it. That is all for now.
Next step will be the boom lift cylinders which will take 2 more geared motors and some figuring out. Thanks for looking. Let me know what you think!
Scott
