70's Wilison Cattle Trailer

Well this is a trailer I have wanted to build for sometime but it has taking some coaxing from my oldest son to get going on it. It is a 70's style Wilison cattle trailer they were made out of wood and steal so this one we are going to build all out of wood as once it is painted you can not tell the difference for the most part. It is made out of Aspen and Poplar and Basswood NO balsa it is all rabbited and wood glued and air nailed together..

Here are some picks of a trailer that is in really bad shape but it is the only one I know of so we took all are numbers from it..

This trailer is a 44 footer in length same height as any other new cattle pot but the belly on these older trailers is higher than a newer trailer..

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/005-58.jpg

Here is what we have so far I ran out of Aspen and Basswood so I have a bunch coming in this week to finish it off..

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/007-40.jpg

There is a fair amount left to do before I paint it we have not done any sanding yet but that will wait till all detail work is done..

Nice job Paul. It's it heavy? I know those are lighter woods but it adds up real quick.

Real sweet trailer, Paul. Something totally different. I like that. Now you just need a true '70 era KW or Pete to pull that thing.

Oh man, this brings me back to my RC plane days. We used to scratch build with wood. Of course that was only balsa, so no comparison in quality and strength with your trailer, but we were building to be as light as possible. Anyway, point is, I really appreciate RC scale woodwork and really, really admire your work here. Well done and keep us posted.

Looks great, wood is such a nice material to work with. This will make for a very interesting and original trailer! I'd be interested in seeing the old school tractor you have in mind for this too.

Looks Sweet Paul. For some reason I never thought about wood for the trailer. I think if I can build RR trestles and buildings out of it I should be able to build trailers... Might have to give it a try.

After the trucks done of course... **** ocd:o

Yes Mike it works very well and with the right primers it looks like painted metal when finished..You will like the next trailer he will be starting on..

Thanks much for the complement Steve but I am far from Da Vinci this is mostly my sons baby he deserves most of the credit..

Ok guys i got some more done the last 2 nights.. I had a stock pile of trailer axle shafts but no housings so this is what I came up with so I would not have to wait for them to get in..

I took 1/2 alum tube and pressed the bronze bushings in the tubes and them made derlin blocks that fit around the tubes to give you a flat spot to bolt the brackets on too..

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/003-58.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/002-55.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/001-51.jpg

Also mounted the axles to the rear of the trailer..
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/005-60.jpg

And I made the plate that the king pin mounts to with the ski on the front of it on the nose of the trailer.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/004-60.jpg

So that's were it is at right now..

And behind the Barn Burner..

Those axles are class! Simple but effective and they are stronger and look better than the kit ones, not to mention, possibly cheaper to make than to buy the stock axles. You possibly have a product there my friend!
