Liebherr R954C

hiya,

just thought I'd start my build thread for the R954.

I am building it for a friend as a fully hydraulic 1/14 scale machine.

Most parts I will be making my self other than the Hyd Pump and Hyd Rams.

the rest such as the Hyd motors for tracks and slew ring, Control valves and the slew joint are amongst those I will making in my shed of wonder and mistery.

it's a bit of a beast at around 16 Kg and a full length at stretch being just over 1000mm.

I will add the first pictrues on sunday. :)

Just a little more done.

Time is spent more on angles and making sure they are spot in.

A huge project and challenge!

Good luck. There's somebody building a 954 in a German forum too.

Impressive. This is going to be a beast.

Cheers

Pip

Re: Liebherr R954C

Thank you. At 1/14 it's on the large side. But it's going to be fully hydraulic. I think I've seen the German build. Is it with electric tracks?

Re: Liebherr R954C

Wow, this is going to be a monster. I read that you were going to make the hydraulic motors and valves. I'd like to see that step by step as I would like to build my own. Great start on the build.

Re: Liebherr R954C

Hi there!
I think the German build has electric tracks, planetary drives with brushless outrunners. There's a picture on the last page of the thread.

How do you plan to get the hydraulic oil from the upper to the lower section of the excavator?

Cheers

Pip

Re: Liebherr R954C

The transfer from body to undercarriage is done via a slew joint.
Alot of the the new parts are going to be made as the original.

Its long to explain but it's the easiest part out of the 3 hyd components I'm making. I'll post pictures when I have completed it. But it's a barrel system.

Hiya,

Here you can see how the hydraulic components are being made.

Here is the barrel for the axial hyd motor.

HMM, Pistachio nuts, graph paper, pencils. This build is getting interesting.
Oh, I forgot to mention shop built cigarettes too.

Re: Liebherr R954C

May I ask why you are going for an axial piston motor and not radial?

Axial machines typically have considerably higher RPMs than radial ones for a given power and hence lower torque on the shaft - are you using a gear between motor and chain wheel?

Rebekah_harper 01-30-2012 06:03 PM

Re: Liebherr R954C

Yeah I'm using a reduction gear box like in the real final drive.

great work so far . I'll be watching the hyd. motor build ;) my dad has a hydash pulled appart for 1 of our koerings 6605 excavators , I've been tempted to build some mini 1's . It'll be a few years yet till I get all the equipment aquired :( unless I get a brain storm :D

Re: Liebherr R954C

Just a little update:
The axial piston motor now has one piston.

http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/c...5/b28febce.jpg
It does look wonky but that's because it's right on the end of it.

Re: Liebherr R954C

Rebekah , you are a genius :D . I've been trying to figure out how to do the ball on the end of the piston . Thats a great idea ;)

Rebekah_harper 02-22-2012 06:48 PM

Re: Liebherr R954C

They are ball joints from a remote controlled Heli. Trex I think. M3 thread and 4mm ball. Piston is 5mm dia. Length is about 15mm

The cylinder barrel is about 25mm dia with 9 cylinders. Centre for drive output is 6mm

you have my gears a turnin now :D;)I think it's a good thing my 385cl is still on the drawing board :D

Re: Liebherr R954C

Well a short quick up date

This is what I am building in the right colours.
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/c...5/7c0645a2.jpg

The main effort has been designing parts.
This is the final drive unit. Possed a big head ache. But got in the end. Will require learning/making internal gear rings. And nope can't buy what I need, I've looked. Lol but if any one finds a 31mm ish dia and 15mm deep with a 0.5 mod then let me know other wise tips on making one would be awesome.
http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/c...5/6d6a69cd.jpg

The under carriage has been redesigned and so has the boom since getting the model.

Re: Liebherr R954C

only suggestion is to look at drill planetaries I have looked high and low for a source of internal ring gears . making them would be done on a shaper or if someone knows of a newer process I'm all ears . My dad just put a hy-dash for a koering 6605 back together (I didn't get pics of it :( ) it has 2 walking plates driven by 3 cams . All the parts for that setup except the cams could be made on a mill . I could make the cams on the lathe with a 4 jaw . this is quite a project that I want to attempt some day :) your doing a great job so far .

Hiya,

I thought I'd share this. It is one of the track, final drive hub.

Doing things on manual machinery does take some thought but getting there.

I look at your drawings and wonder - how is the motor connected to the sprocket? Could you explain or show a pic of it?

Inside there is a double planetary gear box providing reduction and torque.

Re: Liebherr R954C

Wow! Seriously? An axial vane motor, in miniature? That's incredible. Kind of takes builds like these to a whole new level. There must be a lot of thought that goes into building something like this. Did you figure out the displacement of the motor, the pressure it would be run at, and the flow of your pump, in order to get a realistic operating speed? That's amazing.

Rebekah_harper 07-03-2012 12:24 PM

Re: Liebherr R954C

Yeah it's taking alot of planning to achieve this and I'm nearly ready for the prototype.
The one but last post on page one shows two parts of the motor. Once the prototype has been completed and tested I'm going to apply it as a pump too. The pump will then have three of these. 1 for tracks, 1 for boom and 1 for slewing.

Re: Liebherr R954C

Hi Rebekah, are you including a case drain line on the pump's and motor's, to deal with internal leakage? Same as full sized motor's and pump's. Just curious! That affect's how many port's are included in the rotary union.
Look's great so far.

Cheer's, Neil.

Rebekah_harper 07-03-2012 05:01 PM

Re: Liebherr R954C

That's a fair point. I'm leaving that option open. The port you're reffering to is on that's going up the middle.
Am not sure if I'm going to need it but will see what happens during testing.

Re: Liebherr R954C

Just to give you an idea of size. This is the design of the upper body. It's 380mm long

Re: Liebherr R954C

Very nice planning - easily understood that you have a pasion for this model - great to see - and great to learn from - thanks so much for sharring your journey! I am interested to see how the vane motor / pump turns out for you.
Q - do vane motors have a tendancy to cavatate on start up due to lackof pressure on the indiviual vanes?

I've like vane motors since they do self adjust for wear - at least on the vanes that is....

another place for planetaries are air tools - drills specifically - they use vane motors as well which inherintly need high RPM due to being pneumatic.
- check out a low RPM but large chuck hand drill.

Re: Liebherr R954C

The vane motor is something I will be making for some of the attachments. This is to provide rotation to the grab and shears.

Planning is key, I'm an ex digger driver and I haven't lost the love of diggers.

There are companies that build rc diggers but I believe only one does hydraulic tracks and slew control.

The motor is a scaled down version of the real thing. This is the best video that discribes the workings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l5Ft...e_gdata_player
Great thing is that it works for both pump and motor.

ihbuilder 07-04-2012 08:10 AM

Re: Liebherr R954C

Rebekah , don't you mean axial piston pump/motor ? or are you switching to a vain style ?

Rebekah_harper 07-04-2012 01:25 PM

Re: Liebherr R954C

The track and slew motors are going to be axial piston type. The vaine is for attachments.

Just another little update.

I've just got the first run of bearings in just the second to go.
