Biggus' King Hauler

I had a truck a few years ago but now in ownership of the missus a Knight Hauler she also has a Scania 470 and an Aeromax. We attend some shows/meets in uk, and whilst at the Oswestry Truckfest I found a truck I really liked and told her that sometime in the future I would like to build something along those lines. She surprised me on Christmas Day with a King Hauler and so the build began its also what got me back here.

This is the truck that Im using for inspiration.

My skills dont match what I see on her so am only posting when I feel reasonably happy with results. Shell has been painted UltraMarine Blue with satin black roof. Bumper was made by a mate from folded aluminium, Visor is from Stepside (cheers chap, once truck is finished and have a good photo will post in your section), the stacks I made myself from aluminium tube but I plan on making a bigger pair.

I do have an MFU to fit, still need a rear plate for lights and have a few bits from garden trucking. I also have a pair of fenders from Stylin N Profilin on order.

Thought I would also post a photo of the spray booth I used, temp set up on bonnet of a 1965 Datsun Fairlady.

Oh and sorry for poor photos, makes truck look a little washed out.

Thanks for comments..

@ 1985 kenworth the skull emblem on grille I bought of ebay for just £1 plus postage and it started life as a charm for a bracelet (advertised as emo goth ) I removed the bones from behind skull and the little eyelet at the top and it does the job I want it for just right.

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

When it comes to cars (1:1), I always prefer the dechromed look but on trucks, I love to see the chrome piled on, the more the better. However, this is the first time I have ever seen a rig dechromed and I really, really like it. Well done, great build, quite unique and looks amazing. Clever idea for the skull too. Pop up some more pics of it all finished.

I will post more pics soon, not had time to do anything to it lately.

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

Due to my ability to cut anything straight, I had a top plate made to cover top of chassis by a mate, I can also mount the 5th wheel direct to this so I dont need the ugly plastic plate. He also made me a license/light plate for rear out of same aluminium sheet, will be giving them a few coats of satin black.

Photos are a little better and help to show colour of truck.

Hi, if you want a quick and easy way to de chrome the wheels just pop them in a plastic bad and then cover them in the cheap spray oven cleaner and a couple if hours later you have bare plastic rims :-)

biggusditchus 01-30-2012 04:07 PM

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

Thanks for tip chap but at moment I plan to leave them chromed.

Rich The truck is really looking great man nice work..

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

Looks great!
I have also thought of blacking out a lot of parts to build a work truck - chrome is great, but for a real life, day-to-day utility truck, black is more often what you get.

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

Yet more washed out pics but wanted to show the progress, parts painted 5th wheel mounted. A mate of mine made up the plates that mount in front of the air cleaner.
I have started to sort the MFU but not sorted space for the vibration unit (may just do without)

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

Very nice looking, its coming along great. Even though your not planning on it yet I also agree that black chrome or even satin black rims would really set this rig off add in a nice color matched pin stripping on the chassis and wow.

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

Finally a bit more progress, got some wiring done on the roof lights and then test of all lights.. result only 1 not working (nearside rear indicator)

http://www.tcphotos.com/pc_userimage...12174805_6.jpg

As for the wheels I dont think the shiny chrome are working with the blue and black but think if I paint them satin black it will be too much black.... help any ideas I love the white rc4wd wheels but pretty sure that wont work with black n blue either.

Tamiya Cowboy 02-11-2012 06:19 PM

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

Rich it is looking great.. With the wheels a black wheel with a chrome center cap or using Dupla Colors Black Chrome with give you that black look with ok being solid black..

Re: Biggus' King Hauler

Finally got the cab all sorted, speaker box, MFC, and control box all housed in the sleeper, vibration unit mounted above the servos and the interior fitted. So truck is almost complete just waiting on the mail to get me my fenders delivered, oh and got a pair of Wedico CB aerials and the swan mounted.

This time I have managed to get it outside for some half decent photographs.

Ferric chloride used by electronics enthusiasts to etch copper circuit boards also dechromes plastic parts and does it in minutes...:)

Not done much on this lately, but finally got the 2nd trailer painted and the hitch for dolly sorted and was able to connect them all for first time earlier, a little drive around the back yard as a test. Will give it a proper test run at weekend at our boat clubs mini fun day.
