was going to wait a bit before I started this till I got further along , so mostly parts :o I'll put long run parts on the mill while I'm turning parts on the lathe . with no tool changer on the mill , it's hard to concentrate on turning while changing tools and parts out on the mill :( . I hope to change that someday soon

Steve you have been very busy lately. Progress looks great on those pads. Now when do I get a set to throw on my CAT?

Keep it up.

Very nice! Two at a time is a good idea. You won't need a quick change because you can just switch machines!

Dang, that looks nice! And beefy! I like it.

What is the little piece of equipment, sitting in the background, with the rims piled on it's base? A snow cone maker? :D The handle makes me think mini drill press, but I don't see a motor, chuck, or cord anywhere. I thought maybe a hand tapper, but there is no handle for turning the taps. Can't be an arbor press. Not even leverage with those little handles. I give up!

if you really want to know http://www.alspi.com/corepress.htm I found it in a scrounging trip at a place similar to HGR industrial surplus . I thought it was a press of some sort . So, I grabbed for some wild idea of using as 1 till I investigated it a little more  . It's got a granite base ;) and a dial indicator put in it and we got a hight test stand ;)

Re: twins

Thanks Greg , yea your right I could use a good tig welder who has time to weld right now

finished up a little aluminum turning early , pulled the alm chips out and threw in some ss . the result was 2 drive spindles :) gotta cut my keyways and drill the 4 screw holes for the ring gear. yea I'm using my trusty ol hpi savage axle parts  I couldn't find good small bevel gears without breaking the piggy bank :( . I'll be keying all my shafts on these to eliminate any possible slippage . Designing the track frames and drive housing . going to try to mill them out of solid bar .

Huh? Are you thinking about getting into shin grafting or something? :D A tissue coring press? One of those, 'I didn't know that even existed' kind of things. Using it as a height test stand, in the mean time, while you read the manual, doesn't sound to bad. :p

Track sprockets and gears look great, by the way!

Did you see these gears Steve?
They would be better than the old straight cut bevel gears.

I wonder how hard they are ? these nitro ring and pinions are pretty tough .

Another fine digger coming up, Like that weight with the logo in it.
How many times do you have to change setting or can you make it all at once?
Dan

Re: twins

Az , Nate thank you

Dan, thank you , 1 setup as of now all done by 3D milling . I'm going to have to set it on the 2* taper from top to bottom to clean up the logo . A sin plate would be nice right now :( But , I'll make do . The bottom part I'll do a couple setups cause it's only 1" thick . I was going to flat surface all the angles with jigs . The 3D work actually ran pretty quick at 120 IPM with .5" ball mill . finish came out good for paint . The logo area took the longest , that I learned would be better on another setup :o

I let it finish up last night with the lights out then finished it in an hr this morning. this is 4/5th of it so far .

Lookin good Steve.

What does it weigh?

Would it be too hard on tools to do it from steel?

I have nearly 11lbs of counterweight on the 850 and there are times it's not enough.

How far back from center is your counterweight? I'll measure mine to compare.

right now I got 13"+ to the back of the counter weight at 6Lbs I could make the bottom 1/5 in steel . That'll add as much if not more then what the 990 has . the 990's solid is around 12 lbs but I hollowed it out a bunch . I could've gone steel , but the wait will be forever till I get back on steel cutting :( since most the parts I do are in aluminum and the scrap yard does not like it mixed .

:edit: I'm finding it hard to believe only 6 lbs it feels much heavier . It has about the same cubic inch volume as a 20 lb sledge and feels about half .

Re: twins

13" from center pivot?

Mine is 9.5" & the entire length of the house is 16.5".

yes , from the center of pivot . From front of cab to back of counter weight is 17.80" X 10" wide . the counter weight is 5" high what is the diameter of your front idler and sprocket ? Mine are 3" major dia with a 2.6" DP for the sprocket .

Lil Giants 02-18-2013 06:48 PM

Re: twins

Front idler is about 3", maybe a bit more... difficult to see clearly with the tracks on & me standing on my head to look. :p :D

yes , yes , using auto cad I like It I learned on it . solidworks looks nicer but 2 things are holding me back from it : 1) compatibility with my existing A cad 2) price , I own A cad so it's not costing me anything ;)

HA HA , Reg , yea I could start casting the daytons , It's just quicker to mill them

Very impressive.

Just curious, but for those of us who know nothing about machining, where does one buy a giant block of aluminum like that?

Re: twins

thanks Greg they should be ready for the fall time . At least 1
