Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

Hi all,
I have been on the forums drooling on peoples amazing builds for over a year and finally got started on my own project. I really wanted to get a kh before this project for practice and for use as a scale but this should do. So around 8 years ago for my birthday I was bought this (its 1/12 scale):

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...psd4ebe930.jpg

I ended up making a yarder out of it by cutting the bucket off and splicing in a mainline and used some erector set pieces for a drift carriage. For the guy lines I just tied some string to the top of the tower and the other end to a stake in the ground. Well I ended up frying motors and striping gears(I don't know much about RC but where there's smoke coming from your yarder you should stop:cop::lol:) So it sat around until today when I decided to take it apart and see what I had (cat not included):

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...ps39ec3c14.jpg

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...psa00296d0.jpg

 As you can see its not very realistic but I took all the decals off, cleaned it up, took all the cheap electronics out (it was a wired controller that was starting to frey) The cab is on the wrong side and nothing is really to scale so lot of styrene work is coming my way. New motors will have to be bought and mounted somehow and build some high capacity drums and maybe small ones for guy lines. I want to make realistic tracks that will carry this thing up to the landings  Of course lots of other things and i'm 16 with really no RC or scratch building experience but with lots of time but not so lots money and family in logging industry I should be fine.

This is what I want to have it end up look like:

I love these forums and I have learned so much. Thanks for looking and hope to have updates soon. :bounce:

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

one thing about yarders is there are no two just alike , lol it seems companies build them on most any type of tracked vehicle or convert any drag line that they have sitting around , I have been kicking around an idea on making one from a 1/16 scale tank , I have a 1/6 scale tank now but it is a little big lol
please keep posting pictures as you go

thanks

Thanks! Well today I made the cab able to rotate 360+ degrees. I also started working on a tensioning system for the tracks. Buying supplies tomorrow hope to have pictures going. :D:D

Cool! Just make sure it can pull and lift a 42" long or bigger log. That way you could yard logs for my 850:bounce:.

I plan to make this around 1/12 scale so I should be able to stuff in some beefy geared motors;) The one craft store in town didn't have styrene so I will order some tonight. As for the type of glue and filler I need to do some more research. I'm try to find some blue prints or drawings of some sort and get the courage to start hacking away.:eek:

Looks pretty cool!! I'm new to this also, and I thought building a dozer would be a challenge. This yarder looks like it would be a challenge with all the rigging!! Interesting watching as I have found out that building is addictive!!!

Haha, building is addictive! Next thing you know you'll have scale RC's stacked on top of the Corvette...

:cop::lol:

I got some progress done but ran out of styrene. Now I know what I need and can order a bunch online over the weekend. Im using .08ish thicknesses.

I rebuilt the seat and started working on the main boom::eek:

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...ps244fc091.jpg

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6b009f5f.jpg

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...psf74a0b81.jpg

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...psd070d8fd.jpg

The boom will be around 3 feet long when done. Its about 5 inches wide by 1 1/2 inch thick. Not very scale but whatever:D The seat will be around 8 inches off the ground.

If I were sticking to 1/12 scale the boom could reach 5 feet  So I am just building it 1/jarrett thinks it looks good scale:lol: More will be done over the weekend!

Thanks I'll have to try that! I PM'd you and forgot to mention I have a few more parts I could throw in as well.

Well I got a huge chunk done with the cab today. The interior will get more detail once I get some sort of filler. I am addicted to styrene now:eek: The window guard material is galvonized nails cut to size. I have window material on the way. The front window sheild is actully mounted on the boom and I just burnt 50 bucks on materials coming my way next week:o:D

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

Great start Jerrett...Yes working with styrene makes it a little easyer ..Takes a little while to get your head wrapped around how you are go to put things all together ..Theres where insomnia come in ..Most of my designing is done on my back ..lol
Its amazing what kind a materials are already at hand ..good idea with the nails..keep up the great work bud

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

Would it be too cheesy if I said you "nailed" the cab? Yeah that's what I thought...

Keep at it!

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

Hahaha. Thanks guys! I started working on the body today I will have more pics probably tomorrow.

Trucker_Jo 12-02-2013 10:00 PM

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

Today I shaved off bits of the lower black part of the body so it was flat to put some styrene on and start getting the square edged shape i've been looking for. I spilled almost all of my Plastruct glue  all over the table so I will have to get some more. Lots of styrene should come in tomorrow and I can really start cranking away.

The cab will be sitting around 4 inches taller and a few inches more forward than it is now.

I still have no Idea how to do electronics and how to mount the drums and gear reductions and mechanical stuff like that. There will be 7 drums overall in the machine so i'm guessing a radio with a bunch of channels will be needed:eek: Thanks.

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

Nice work Jarrett..Realy taking shape ..Check out MEK for adhesive ..hard to to get but works great ..very thin and watery ..all you do is hold the 2 parts together and brush overtop and peices almost melt together ..stong bond too

Trucker_Jo 12-06-2013 03:37 PM

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

Hey thanks guys. You wouldn't think that a thinner could melt plastic but it looks like I can buy it pretty much every anywhere. Ill try it out.

Trucker_Jo 12-08-2013 12:41 AM

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

:update: I found MEK but only in gallon sizes so i'll order a quart online along with some other things. After working on the yarder the past few days I am beggining to realize the size of this monster and am figuring my boom will need to be bigger now:o I put more details on the cab, and got some more main body panel work done. The base seems to be floppy with all the stress that will be put on it so i'm planning on bolting some aluminum strips on the bottom out of sight to make everything rigid again.

Excellent job on this build ,good to see your back on it ,yea the electrical is the fun part ,lol !! just got through with my dragline the wiring was a pain ,
noticed some hinges on the bottom of the cab will that be easy access to electrical/batteries ..

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

I have worked on the yarder some more this past month. Some more body work and details are done.

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...psbfacb62d.jpg

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4f82dd21.jpg

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4914ea38.jpg

And I have been playing around with the gearboxes. I eliminated the slipper clutches and put in a few spacers so now everything is nice and tight. I have no idea what motors are in this but I do know that they have no power. I have been shopping arround looking at gear motors but am not exactly sure what to get and if they will even fit. Do I just put in a can motor like these but with a little more poop? In the pic with the shaped drive shaft I hope to find a plastic gear the size I need and put it on there and then run k1 chain on it. The other end I'm working on a tensioner with a gear the same size as the driven one.

http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9b728432.jpg

Oh yeah, I decided this is going to be a 124 instead of a 122, only because I could find a bunch more pics and it will also be MOAR bigger. More to come soon:D

Built the main boom mount. Sure hope it holds together...Styrene and MEK are pretty great so fingers will be crossed!

Re: Madill 122-B Swing Yarder

I have almost finished the main boom now. Yes I am still alive haha, but my summer has become far too busy....
I graduated High School and also earned an associates degree in college at the same time. I realized I will really not have much time for this hobby, and if anyone would be interested in this well built lump of plastic for close to free I would give it to them + extras etc.....I may post it in BUY SELL soon. Thanks guys.
