Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

Hello,

today I'd like to start a thread about my custom build Kenworth C509 as australian roadtrain. I try to create a scale truck, but I can't promise.

The only difference will be that I want to add fuel tanks of a T909.

Because of my lousy english, I'd like to speak via pictures with some comments.

Actually the build is stopped to finish my rebuild of my Knight Hauler, but after it is done, the C509 will be continued with high priority.

When I started the project, I bought a King Hauler as the base kit. But after some changes to the cabine, I saw that the needed modification would be more work than building it from the scatch.

The base for the truck is a 8x8 frame.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-j-1f0e.jpg

So I started the cabine with the mud wings.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-18-17e6.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1a-6c83.jpg

Because of the fact that the bowl was round, the mud wings are not completely in parallel. :(

After this, I started with the hood

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1l-9f61.jpg

After that the saw was taken into action to cut off the part that will be fix at the cabine. The hood will be openable.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1k-b53b.jpg

After this was done I started to build the cabine. The doors will be openable.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1r-44f6.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1u-fc49.jpg

Parallel I added the cabs for the lambs.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-20-7cbb.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-2c-9778.jpg

After that I started to build the sleeper.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-2g-93db.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-2h-c7e1.jpg

So far so good, the PS works were finished for that moment.

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

After the sleeper was finished in its format, I wanted to be able to open and close the sleeper doors. They will hide the On/Off switch, the charcher contacts, connection points for the sound module and custom build computer boards.

My first idea was to create lock bars moved by bowden cables.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-30-65b9.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-33-a3c6.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-34-2723.jpg

The doors were fastened with brass hinges.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-36-698d.jpg

The next step was the control block

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-37-7f6f.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-38-7327.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-39-5fd0.jpg

But the hinges set on the outside wasn't very nice, I wanted to hide them. So I tested other hinges that were fixed from behind.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-3j-c8ff.jpg

Horror !!!

Because of the fact the the PS plates are 2mm thick, the doors can't be opened with a standard hinge without a hige gap between sleeper and dor. So I started to design custom hinges that can open and the door can slide out a bit.

After finishing all the work I realized, that the bowding cables are having to much curves, it's not working easily. So a complete redesign was needed. In addition, the hinges are too flexible, the door is hanging down when it's open.

So I started to design new hinges.

Thanx guys ;)

Let me update you with the actual last part, the grill. Yesterday it was too dark on the balcony to go on typing.

The grill was my first project with bigger brass elements. Some parts could only be soldered with a flame. After finishing the frame we had a bit smokey smell in our living room. :D

First I folded the upper frame element to fit to the hood contour.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4g-1c9a.jpg

The edges are additionally fasteded with a thread rod.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4i-0640.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4f-2a79.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4l-bd4c.jpg

After the frame was finished I started to build the grill elements. Here's a picture of the procedure started from left to the right.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4p-9766.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4q-7e77.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4r-5878.jpg

In addition I started a sub project. The saddle plate handling had to be modified that way, that the mechanism can't be seen. So I tried to find a solution with a micro servo under the plate.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-66-45fb.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-64-ca46.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-65-3b8a.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-67-63dc.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-69-c0e1.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-6a-ec8c.jpg

A short visdeo how it works

But after finishing I found out that the servo can't be hidden completely. If I create a brass plate to hide it, it would block the plate if it tilts to the front. So the road train will get the same mechanism as the Knight Hauler.

Your grille looks amazing! Did you file and sand the grille surround's inner contour after it was soldered together, or before hand? You have so much patience!

gismow 06-10-2014 03:34 PM

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

Thanx to all ;)

@ Nathan: Yes, it was filed and saned after the soldering was completed. It was a job for round about 4 hours. After had my hands were no longer usable for the evening and my wife grumbled about the brass dust around my working table ;)

But it was definitely worth the work.
