First Globe and trailers
 

Hi everyone...just joined and thought I would start my own build thread.

This is my globeliner just painted TS-9 with a stock (for now) flatbed and the beginnings of a lowboy I started last winter.

I'll add as time and $ allow;)

from what i can see it looks good. welcome to the forum (im new as well) can we get some larger photos and maybe a closer on of the flatbed.

Made a couple of changes to the flatbed. I have ZERO experience w/ styrene but I have to say I really like fooling around with it:D.
Waiting on some lenses to finish the lighting and need to paint...now I think I want to stretch it.
I'll post more when I am able, thanks for looking.

here's some work I did on the lighting. got the controller from a guy in Canada. quite a bit of work to set up for the truck but a nice product nontheless. I control the marker lights on the trailer w/ their own power triggered by an aux output on the controller to a solid state relay in the trailer. want to add more lighting to the cab and do some tweeking w/ the brightness but this is a start.

btw, those who have asked for lowboy pictures, there's not much to show. In fact I'm kind of leaning toward scrapping the aluminum structure and going to mild steel...thats down the line, need a couple of tools first;)

Bill, the lighting on the Globe looks great.

If I may ask, why are you thinking about scrapping the lowboy? It is a really good looking trailer. Adding some decking and swimg arms will complete it. I for one would like to see it finished.

The main rails of the trailer are 1" channel "ripped" to width on my table saw and the cut isn't as clean as I had hoped (even with a brand new $60 specialty blade for aluminum). The more I look at the trailer the more I don't like the scale of the aluminum channel, the wall seems very heavy. I do have tons of time drilling and tapping all the crossmembers so it is hard to throw that away, maybe I'll come up with an idea to salvage the project, I have no deadline, I just have to feel good about my quality and not feel like I'm accepting mediocrity.

Looks great to me Bill. Maybe as stated before, with decking and details you may have a different feel for it. On the other hand you know what you want it to be. Either way not for the scrap heap at all!

I understand what you are saying Bill. Sometimes scale will be sacrificed for strength. In your case, the strengh is there.

As for cleaning up the channel after cutting, I have found that running the rail through a thickness sander cleans and levels the rails in about four passes @ .020 per pass. Just need to leave extra material to be able to do this.

I think that you can bevel the inside edge of the C-flange to reduce the extra thick flange appearence. Sometimes just rounding the exposed edges of the C channel wil improve the appearence.

For a 1st time scratchbuild, the trailer look fine. Just keep adding details and the decking with some paint and it will look great. Strength versus scale can be a tricky problem. For me on a trailer, I would go for strength as you never know what you might want to haul on it. Just ask Izzy when he put dirtpusher9's dozer on his lowboy. All 150# of it. Trailer came thru with flying colors but I am not sure about Izzy:rolleyes: He has been trying to get his IH to pull its front wheels off of the ground every since:eek:

I like the trailer as it is. My trailer had long flanges and after a little while I forgot all about them and nobody said boo. But as you stated the build is yours - so it's your choice.

And dirt pushers was a heavy haul - fun though. Kept her in first the whole time!
