Our new M41A3

Never thought I would be posting here but funny how things work out sometimes.:D After attending the Clifford truck show we spent a day with friends who took us to a massive Flea market in the area. Well there was a RC booth and I just couldn't pass up on the great deal! $120 bucks and S&M is the new proud owners of a tank!

this thing runs great right out of the box but I think once the plastic tracks start giving troubles I'll upgrade the undercarriage to metal.
Already having lots of fun but if there was one other upgrade I would like to make it would be... a gas charged barrel so I could shoot my neighbours dogs which keep #%^$ in my yard!:cop:

check it out !:D

Wait till you try Tamiya tank,no comparison to heng long, but for the money it definitely worth it. Next time you in Toronto, come over and see my collection of tanks, especially a couple of new Leopards, the sound is amazing! The engine, hydraulics, electric, everything digitally recorded.
Enjoy the new toy.

Funny you mention boats:) ..... the last time I was visiting my mom she asked me if I could get her something out of the attic. while I was up there I saw something that caught my eye and was amazed to see the ship my father built the year before I was born. 1967 to be exact and there it was after all these years! I remember playing with it as a kid.I'm probably the one who did the most damage to it

Its in rough shape but I want to restore it to its original beauty in honor of my dad who passed away 3 yrs ago. He was a true master of woodworking his whole life. I want to see this sail again someday! and unlike 40 yrs ago when you just pointed and let her go, now with RC it will be the icing on the cake.

enough said. heres what I got to start with..... enjoy :)

This is an actual ship that sailed the great lakes back in the late 40's early 50's so I have tons of pictures for reference and my mom figures she can find some old pics of the model so all is good:D

thanks for looking.

I guess this should have gone under boats ? Please move if need be.

WOW that is soooooo cool! I can't wait to see you work on this Mario! The fact that your Dad build that makes it so much more meaningful. Obviously your Dad was a talented man....I guess I know where you get the hobby bug from now....

How big is it?

Hey Reg. ya, I guess I was born with the bug, just didn't know it till a year and a half ago:D. Lol

From bow tip to stern she's 43"
Beam is 4 1/4
And a height of 3" along the cargo deck and 5" to the top of the stack.

The WILFRED SYKES is still sailing on the lakes. She had an unloading boom and associated gear installed in 1975.

This will be a labour of love for sure. My plan is to keep as much original as possible. The paint is still in great shape. The deck needs cleaning and then a new coat. The way I see it, this is still my dads boat and I don't want to change anything....except a servo powered rudder of course :)

The challenge will be replacing the broken wooden bow section and all the railings! I think my dad used sewing needles or pins as the vertical posts and then lead soldered the wire to all of them:eek:

I will definitely be posting a thread in the boats section once I get started on this one . Thanks for the pics of the 1:1 and any comments, suggestions.

Mario, don't buy anymore Heng Longs, once you drive Tamiya you would never go back to them.If you really itching to spend money,I have two tanks on Kijiji Toronto: Sherman and Leopard 2a6,both are new ready to run.Pictures don't do justice. There are a lot of youtube videos with sound that will blow you away. Also there is tank club in Niagara region where guys get together and play war in a mock village using infrared systems.INTERNATIONAL CAN-AM RC TANK CLUB check it out! can-amrctankclub.forumotion.ca/
Cheers, Jack

Re: Our new M41A3

Cool Mario. I assume your dad scratchbuilt that ship? Being that you are so close to the locks, this restoration should be right up your alley, no? It would be a nice way to honor your dad.

Supermario 08-06-2013 04:19 PM

Re: Our new M41A3

Thanks Nathan. This is a great way to honor my dad especially with something from so long ago in his early woodworking days. After talking with my mom, and looking at the detailed steps, doors and hatches on the ship, it's a kit my dad purchased in the early 60's.
Nevertheless, I'm going to enjoy restoring this ship and I think the perfect place to take it on its first voyage will be the St Mary's river near the locks right where the real ship has sailed many times in the past:) Who knows, wouldn't that be something if the real ship was going through the locks as I run the model! Lol

Mario, that boat is really great and I know you will do a beautiful restoration...I wish I had one. too bad it wasn't the Edmund Fitzgerald though..that was always my favourite freighter since falling in love with the song as a kid. can't wait to see how it turns out.

Neat boat! I love the fact that your dad built it!

I have some wings for an astro hog that I bought, but never started. One day I gave it to my dad to build for me or him. He never finished it, but I have one of the wing panels hanging in the hallway as artwork and a reminder of my dad!
