Ag-Chem Rogator 854 Sprayer Project

Hello everyone! I'm new here. A big reason for joining the forum was I spotted rc_farmer's fabulous 8103 Terragator! I freaked! I actually saw it some time back on the Toy Tractor Times (I think) and re-spotted it again here. Nice work rc-farmer! Ag Chem equipment is special to me since I own and operate a fertilizer retail facility in Wyoming. We have 4 Terragators and I recently purchased an 854 Rogator. Soon afterwards, I decided to build a scale model of it. Started in mid-September and here is the progress, more or less to date. It is not remote controlled, but will be a static model in 1/16th scale and is entirely scratch built except for the cab. When finished, the 90' booms will be 5 1/2 feet wide.

The real machine:

I have about 175 hours into the build and the rig is about 3/5 done.

Here is a video of me playing on the real machine.

Those pictures don't do this rig justice!!!!

Let me tell you all, this model has some serious details. As I have been following this build on another forum, all I can say is that the users here need more detail pics!

Keep it up!

Welcome to the forum! I saw your build on priate farm toys and thought it was incredible! You need to get some more photos up. The way you made the tank was very cool. Looking forward to seeing this one come together!

Re: Ag-Chem Rogator 854 Sprayer Project

Thanks rcf!!! When I get the gator done, we should do a photoshop where your Terragator and my Rogator are in the same pic posing together! BTW, Helena Chemical Company is a large supplier of inventory to our company. Would like to send a pic of your 8103 to him. He was pretty awesomated when I was telling him about your air machine.

Well, I can't post links over to the other forum, unfortunately. The links direct you into the login page, so unless your'e a member, the links cant be accessed. Ill put together a photo collage here. Basically I started on the rig in mid September and the pic above is the progress you see.

Truly beautiful build.

Were did the engine come from?

Are you using a resistance solder iron?

Thanks again guys!

Mike, I built the engine from a JD 4430 precision engine (404T) and a plastic JD industrial engine. Between the two, and some custom fab work, I was able to reasonably replicate the Cummins 5.9 liter 200 horse engine found in these rigs.

I use a solder flame torch for all my soldering. I use Forney lead free solid core solder and a Japanese mfg'd thin wire lead free rosin core. The big Forney works great for strength soldering and the wire solder is good for flowability and delicate areas.

Here is the mess on my bench. Can you spot the red solder torch? What about the rogator, lol!

Well then that makes this even more amazing. I know how hard it is to solder delicate and intricate parts like these with a flame, getting one thing soldered on and then another with out un-soldering the first, or having it move on ya..

NICE WORK!!!

I really should get some butane for my little torch, sure would be easier than using my big 14oz propane torch...

Re: Ag-Chem Rogator 854 Sprayer Project

Thanks again guys!

Mike, soldering with flame is not always user friendly. Like you stated, there is much potential frustration. Its taken years to learn to solder, select the solders, and fluxes which work for me, and figure out clamping and assembly techniques to minimize the cussing. It doesn't always work though and I still get my share of stuff falling apart, moving, imploding, etc, etc! I still have some major solder cleanup and "body work" as I'm closer to getting the chassis ready for paint.

your model is very cool it would be easy to make it drivable with the small gear reduction motors the have out now days and all the micro electronics but then again your gator is a nice peice of model building
