JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Well I have been working on a few builds and this is one of them but I have been held up do to breaking the USB port on my camera and I have the pictures to the beginning of 3 builds on it but it is to be back tomorrow so says the tracking number so I am going to get the thread started.
I am building a JET trailer for a customer of mine he can make himself known if he likes. It is a as the title says a 53 foot trailer with a drop deck and a beaver tail with spread axles. These trailers are used a lot in the Ag Industry and in the Construction Industry do to there ability to carry good sized loads and ease of loading.. So here are the pictures of the 1:1 trailer I am going off of.. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...beavertail.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...y/76093651.jpg The hole trailer will be built out of 1/8 alum deck and rails the rails are cut out on a water jet then the deck will have would veneer over the top of it with brass edging and flip down ramps. Also the trailer will be running tamiya trailer axles with wedico tires for Low Profile tires. All parts will be hooked together with 1.5 and 3.0mm screws that with drilled and taped and very few screws will be able to be seen to keep that scale look and that clean and quality but look.. |

Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Nice looking drop deck. I am surprised at how close the tires are to hitting, does the 1:1 not have suspension?

They don't have a lot of travel do they.. The 1:1 trailers have big bags on them that allow them to haul a great deal but they do not have a lot of up travel but they have a pretty good amount of down travel. |
Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Wow, this is cool Paul.....good to see someone building a JET! Great trailer, great manufacturer, and simple but tough design.
Used to work for the #1 seller of JET trailers (at least grain hoppers anyhow) in North America. The red T600 they had to haul their trailers around to the dealerships would roll into the yard about twice a week from Humboldt, IA. Guys can have their Wilsons and Easts......product design on both sucks, especially from a service standpoint. No easy access to anything....airbags, thrust washers, shocks, air fittings. Wow, anyway getting back to your project!:D Looks like a neat build to keep an eye on bud!:) -Alex |
Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.

Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Ok boys and girls here we go finally got my camera back so I can get some picks up of this trailer build.
Ok so here is one blank rail and one with the 1/2 angle bolted to it with 1.5mm screws. All screws are drilled and taped. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/004-15.jpg So here is a pick of the end of the rails with the taper cut in them laying on the 1/8 inch deck. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/005-14.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/006-12.jpg Here is a pick of the lower deck all bolted on with 3mm counter sunk screws that are 4mm long with nylock nuts on them. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wboy/014-2.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wboy/015-3.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wboy/016-4.jpg Ok 2 more picks. just a little mock up of how the axles will look when up the trailer. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wboy/017-4.jpg Here is a close up pick of how the wedico truck tires look as low pro tires on a tamiya wheel. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/003-15.jpg So that's it for right now I will be working on the upper deck some tonight and hopefully have the axles bolted up under it tomorrow.. |
Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Wow the trailer looks great.

Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Looking good I noticed that the 1:1 had solid frames??? Or at least it looks that way. Did you go with cutouts just for weight savings or looks or is it me just thinking they are solid on the orig..
anyway keep up the great work --Dan |

Paul,
Where did you find 1.5mm bolts and nuts? Lynn |
Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Paul, I like the way you built the trailer, it should easily carry any piece of rc equipment you can fit on it. Nice work.

Paul.
that trailer looks sweet can't wait to see more now, the wedico tires look good as low pros which ones did you order from uncle ricky? merritt |
Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Hey Paul, love those trailer frame rails. How long are they? Obviously scaled to Tamiya size, but I just wonder if they could be useful for a Wedico trailer. Width is no problem to change. Length might be. What do you think? Did you ever think about just selling the frame rails?

Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Great work Paul. Looks like it will be another one of your fine builds.

Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
Must say, "That is one sweeeet trailer!!" Went to McMaster-Carr, no 1.5mm screws or bolts. 1.4mm or 1.6mm are offered. Am I looking for the wrong thing?? Would like to get some as they are closer to scale for some things.

Thanks Much guys for all the great comments all the comments just prove the great bunch of guys and gals we have over on this board. Nate Ill get you some measurements on the rails and Lynn I have to correct my self I am using 2.0mm sorry I thought I was using 1.5.. Ok on with the picks. I got the decking done on the front of the trailer and I installed the plate and the hitch pin. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/002-14.jpg Then I got the plates cut and drilled and taped that the leaf spring packs bolt too. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/003-16.jpg And installed the axles too. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/004-16.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/005-15.jpg The spread on the axles is a standard 10foot 2inch spread. And the finish pick of the wheels mounted and it is now a roller now it is time for the brass edging and the wood deck then the ramps and paint.. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/006-13.jpg Let me know what ya'll think. |

Thanks for all the great Comments guys.. I have not had a lot of time to work on it till this weekend. Well here are some updates I am trying to get it into paint this weekend but I am running out of time for sure.. I got all the brass edging done and also got the oak plywood down. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/002-18.jpg Then I tackled the ramps. I made them out of derlin as they will get marked up by loading and un loading so this will help keep them scratch free sort of.. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/004-17.jpg Also added the extension to the deck that the ramps mount too and mounted the ramps. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...boy/005-16.jpg http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wboy/007-9.jpg Then I started on the cleats that go on the ramps and the beaver tail. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wboy/009-7.jpg Closed up. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wboy/008-8.jpg And one side all done.. http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g2...wboy/010-4.jpg So hopefully finished picks without paint today..:( |
Re: JET 53' Drop Deck/Spread Axle/Beavertail Trailer.
