Bucyrus Erie crane truck
 

Well, here it goes my first build ever. I want to build a 3 axle 18t crane truck in 1/14 scale, like this.

So far the only thing have made is a clamshell bucket and it is only about half finished, but here is what I have done so far.

I will follow this build . I've been writing a list of stuff I need to build it . I have the operating manuals for it and the chance to have the real one and then they scrapped it ,so sad . Mike

Don't be afraid to build weight into a clam. Weight equals digging ability.

:bounce:Looks like your off to a great start. Will be watching with great interest. I raln one that looked like the Bucyrus only it was built by American so my vote is for #1..:bounce: I keep thinking I should try one but havn't found the subject yet

Looks like your doing a 14B or is it going to be the 22B ? Any drawings for the upper works let me know. I have an extensive collection of Bucyrus-Erie parts manuals.

I have not decided what crane type I'm gonna make, I'm gonna finish the truck frame and maybe the wheels before I start on the crane, I will be sure I ask you when I start working on the crane body.

I hope you also plan on a drag bucket? I have both for my NyLint conversion. The drag bucket is SO effective compared to the clam when trying to dig dirt or sand or any other loose material. The drag bucket always amazes me when I run it, it works REALLY good compared to the clam.

I like to use the clam to pick up solid objects like chunks of concrete paver blocks. Also, the clam is so sensitive to line control, any operator slip ups means you will likely drop the contents of the bucket. And one more thing, don't try to use a single wrap on the closer pulleys. It really does help to have more leverage on the closer line to help prevent lifting the bucket instead of closing it.

And, I would like to see the second one.:D

Yes I do plan on making a drag bucket. For the clamshell I'm going to do a triple or quadruple wrap for the closer pulleys.

So I have 1 vote for the first one and 1 vote for the second one now, hmm... :p

I'll make it easy for you. Build both of them...........one with drag bucket and one with the clam :lol: The fact is you can never have to many........:bounce:

I will be watching this build since I am also a dragline fan and this kinda falls into that group. Personally I like the 2nd. one but I would say build the one that you have or can get the most information on. Info is key and very hard to find on some of these old builds. Good luck!!

Well the kit got here yesterday so i have a chassis to start on :bounce:. Now I need get some styrene for the fenders and cab.

Where's the best place to get styrene? And what thickness should I get?

Get in touch with fhhhstix (Travis) here on the forum, he can get you the styrene and help you with deciding what thickness you need.

Sign shops and a decent plastic shop will have all the styrene you will ever need . I also use thin plexiglass . Mike

Well, I'm back to work on the crane truck :popcorn:

I have started on the front cab, this is my first time working with styrene so I made some mistakes :o I don't think I did too bad for my first try :confused: what do you guys think?
