4200XL v1.5 - Replacement Servo Recommendations?

Hi all,

After sorting some of the issues with my 4200xl I think its time to start slowly replacing all the electronics bar the controller and receiver.

What would people recommended for good quality replacement servos which would be a direct fit? Not too worried about cost as I always put quality before price. I'm also based in the UK so any links for Amazon or eBay UK would be perfect.

Thanks in advance

Hitec would be the way to go probably, have a look at Steve webs servoshop.co.uk

I also seem to recall that if you go Hitec the stock servo horns will not fit. You'll have to cut down one of the horns supplied with the servo to fit the valve block.

Do you mean cut down the splines in on the servo as they connect directly to the valve block.

What the recommended Hitec servo I should purchase, still the Hitec 5645?

If you go with the hitec it comes with a red 4 arm servo horn. You have to cut it down a bit to fit in the valve head. You'll see once you try and install it.

Hi guys,
In order to get to the servos are you guys pulling the metal side of the excavator body off by unscrewing the screws or are you pulling the pump mechanism off the floor of the frame and getting the servos off that way. Seems like both ways aren’t very good as I think of you pull that safe off the paint is going to chip where the plate meets the other body edges.
Thanks!!!

Do not take the body side off, your paint will be screwed up, just take the one screw out or two screws on the bottom of the excavator where the valves are located, mine has one, then turn it and pull your servos off.

Thanks very much for that info!

Look at the attached photos. You need to remove 3 screws that secure the hydraulic pump, and 1 screw that secures the servo/valve frame. All the screws have rubber O-Rings that I presume is to keep hydraulic fluid leaking out the bottom of the body. Don't disconnect any of the hydraulic lines - not necessary. 2 screws secure each servo. I highly recommend replacing all 4 at once. Once my 4200XL was acting crazy - the tracks would go, the turret would turn, hydraulics would move at the same time even though I was not inputting any of it - it was a bad servo that electronically was making the machine out of control.

For the Hitec HS-5645MG splined shaft go into the socket that controls the valve you need to remove a fillet support. In addition I milled off some more material to match the original servo dimensions. My concern is that if the servo shaft is only partially seated in the socket it might strip out. See photos.

Now the last thing about the servos. I had to reverse the Channel 8 servo. It needs to be going clockwise. When that is done the servo rotates a bit initially. If you have to reverse any of the servos, you want to remove them from the servo/valve housing before initiating the reprogramming. Otherwise you risk throwing the valve out of adjustment. What I did upon removing the original servos I devised a scribing reference system. See photos.

.........One more thing - on my 4200xl the tank and pump are jammed together - not the best design. See photo.
