The Spektrum DX18 radio is a good one. Pretty straight forward to use. Bought mine second hand (Gen.1) for 450.

I've been looking at doing the same thing but I guess I need to get a hold of Spektrum, I'd like to know what the difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 is, to make a determination as to whether it will effect what we do.

I too recommend the Spektrum DX18. I have a few of them and they work for everything. I am pretty sure that the only differences between the Generation 1 and the Generation 2 are as follows:
-The Gen. 2 has the speech software where the radio can be set up to talk/tell you things (This would benefit someone piloting an airplane or heli in flight).
-The Gen 1 does not have the wireless trainer link (again, for an airplane or heli benefit).
-With software updates they should be the same.

Something that you will have to do on either gen 1 or gen 2, is setting up the left stick to be spring loaded for the up and down movement. They are all set up for airplane and heli throttles, therefore, the stick will not return to the middle position on its own.

Good Luck,

Good Luck,

Thanks for the info, I figured it was something simple that was of no concern to our genre. From what I've heard you can change the left stick fairly easy on a Spectrum, I've done Futaba years ago and 2 Airtronics over the years but haven't tackled a Spectrum yet.

Here's a quick how-to video demonstrating how to adjust the left stick so that it self centers.

If you buy a radio from Horizon Hobby and you want self centering sticks tell them that at time of perchase and they will do it for nothing they are great people to do business with. Ed
