Machinist's jack is used for an added support when milling or drilling on a long part that will not completely fit in a vise or fixture. It just keeps the part stationary while you work.

Basically an adjustable support when working with large things. Usually have the jack piece itself and a few spacer blocks for added ht, that lock into each other.

somebody on this site was using a mini pair for jackstand's in there build, don't remember who at this point.
