My Carson Goldhofer low loader/drop deck

3 Attachment(s)
Hi all, look what turned up Monday morning on the doorstep the new Carson Goldhofer low loader/drop deck more pics to come as this will be a very long build instead of slap it together in a couple of hours like other trailers..

There are alot of pro's and cons about this trailer,
The length of this trailer is 880mm from front to rear without the ramps mounted to it.
I comes with sealed bearings not bushing like standard trailers.
The body is laser cut steel spot welded together and the chassis rail and skid plate are also spot welded to the deck, there are side support that need to be cut from a sheet (similar to photo etch part) this is a solid looking trailer with aloottt of raw steel/alu parts and **** loads of small bolts/screws ect,

Part of the lower decking is ply wood with plastic chequered plate that they say to use with thin double sided tape, the travel arms, some brackets, U bolts are also hard plastic, the air bags a soft rubber and the axle are mounted over the top of the travel arms where as a normal trailer they are mounted under, the tyres are hard Carson Fulda's about 58mm in height and the other parts that aren't metal there hard plastic.
The lights that come with the trailer you need to use the Carson 7-chamber light set for trailer as the light lenses that come with it are different from the normal Tamiya trailer lights.

The biggest let down for this kit apart from not being what was promised, wrong size tyres ect is the raw steel and alu as nothing is painted/anodised/powder coated as when I got the steel one piece deck out of the plastic bag my hands were dark after from handling the raw metal so after forking out the 399,00 ish EURO's you have handed Carson's you still needs to painted/powder coated it yourself.

More pic's to come as I build it and I will be bringing it to the Sydney 14 Scale Modelers meet that RCRoadtrain (Richard) is doing this Sunday so people can see it as it comes out of the box..

Cheers Tracy

I've only seen a finished one yet.
399 for such a solid trailer made of steel and spot welded is pretty reasonably compared to the other Tamiya trailers. But you really can't expect getting an already painted trailer for so little money. At least not one beeing made in Germany. It's quite labour intensive as you'll find out soon and it would only result in a price no one wants to pay.
Put it this way: Pretty good deal with the current exchange rate ;)

Looks pretty good from way over here. LOL. I bet the price would double inthe small bits were machined instead of plastic.

Are you going to try and alter for the correct size wheel or build as is? Is the deck height correct? Maybe they did it on purpose to compromise?

Hi all, there is no build progress but I took these pic's for a friend and thought I'd post them here with some of the measurement I took of them compared to a tamiya truck wheel
59mm high Carson Goldhofer tyre, 32mm wide on both rims
83MM hight Tamiya truck tyre, 46.5mm wide on both rims
Carson Goldhofer axle diameter 5mm
Tamiya truck axle diameter 4mm

I also forgot to add you can but the Goldhofer tyres & rims separately from http://translate.google.com.au/trans...%26prmd%3Divns (when you go to the site look in NEWS for details) if you require a slightly larger tyre than the normal Carson low loader one, also you can get the air bag suspension /axle from this site if you want to scratch build a trailer to suit your own purposes, one other thing to note with the new suspension it give you the option to mount the axle over or under the travel arm..

Hi brian yes the airbags are the kit ones for this trailer and www.veroma-modellbau.eu/ is the only place I've come across that you can get then separately...

I don't know, Tracy, I think it's a nice looking trailer. Besides the tires and paint concerns, what else really bugs you about it? Lacking detail? It looks pretty nice, well designed, and strong.

Re: My Carson Goldhofer low loader/drop deck

I think that is a first class trailer. It is a lot of hard earned cash, no doubt, but if you tried to scratch build one to even close to that quality, I reckon it would cost a lot more. Having to buy axles, suspension, wheels, tyres, bumpers, legs, and all of the rest, you would still have to have metal fabricated (and the cost of the raw metal), not to mention tools, workshop and time. I don't think you would get the detail and strength, I mean look at all of the ribbing underneath and it's not even cheap leaf springs, it's airbags.

I can see you are unhappy, but believe me, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE that trailer but just couldn't spare 400 euro at the moment. I think it's a real shame that for the money spent, you are not enjoying it, so for your own sake Tracy, get it painted or powder coated nice, to match your truck, swap the tires and whatnot and who knows, it may grow on you and you could come to love it.

It really is a seriously high quality piece of kit. Best of luck, I really hope it works out for you!

I was just wondering how this trailer turned out?

I think it's a nice trailer just wish it were longer and Wedico width.
