American Crane Boom

Hello everyone, my name is Price, new member to this forum. I enjoy working with metal as well as model cranes (scratch building).

This is my first attempt at building this 92 H boom. It is built from sheet metal and mig welded. It is more like rapid prototyping. Each panel cut with CNC plasma, 12 panels in total. I built this thinking it was going to be in a 1:32 scale but it didn't connect well with my 32 scale crane deck. It could be in the scaling or it could be that an American 11320 boom will not fit an HC230 crane deck. Maybe a little of both.

Note the offset bends at the base (Trying to make it fit)......

Lots of great threads here and I have enjoyed this site very much.

Cool, I'm not sure I understand the method of construction. Are the flat panels cut and then welded along the edges? If so, the cross tubes look great, and round for being cut from flat . It looks nice.

Re: American Crane Boom

Thanks Jim. Yes all the panels are flat. The material used (Galvanized Steel) is about 1/16" thick. I haven't built any booms from tubing yet. I am slowly building up to it. I think I will experiment with some Copper, Brass and steel tubing when the time comes to build the boom. I am certain there will be a learning curve in every element of it.

Thanks again Jim

I Mike, yes I am very certain that the laser would do a much better job. The edges of these panels are rough. I built this to be a visual aid basically. It took about an hour from cutting to paint. I have seen laser cut edges and they are much cleaner and precise. If I get the chance today I will re-cut one of the panels to show it pre-assembly.

Thanks Mike

I am certain that if someone invested the time with a dremel tool, the edges could be cleaned up quite nicely. I am very fortunate to have access to the equipment to produce something like this so quickly. I hope to work with some metal tubing for boom construction. Several years ago I did build a short boom out of hard drawn copper tubing and silver brazed it all together. It seemed to would well.
