6X6 Quarry Dump Truck

I acquired the Knight Hauler we built at the 2013 Indy show from Tc1cat. I decided after the RCT&C Midwest Spring meet I needed to get busy and build a dump truck. It will be a 6x6 and maybe a little different looking, it depends on how many cabs I destroy trying to build it:rolleyes:.
I got it last night and started on it tonight.
Here's the truck as built.

And here it is a couple hours later. :D

Hoping to have it done buy Indy:bounce:, Thanks for looking!

Nice rig and love the work so far. I'll keep an eye on your thread to see how it turns out.

Hi,

nice work, proper build...

What about the back bord? Will you keep it as it is or will you add some plates to give it a structure ?

Thanks Tea wrex I need to get busy if I'm going to get it done by Indy.

Hi Gizmow,
There is some structure on the inside. I didn't put anything on the outside since you won't see it with the dump bed down. This is going to be what I call a "stand way off scale" build with emphasis on the play/fun factor instead of cool scale factor. I've picked up a lot of ideas from shows and meets I've been to over the last few years so we'll see if I can pull it off!

Not much to show, finished the back of the cab and roof. Cut and rebuilt the floor.
This photo is a concept shot, I was hoping to use the stock rails but they are about 2-3" short, I need to move the steer axle back and put a scale 65" spread on the rear axles. I might as well bite the bullet and start from scratch with some blank rails.

Small update, not getting far, more shopping for parts and deciding on a build strategy than actually building:rolleyes:
Made the frame rails. Laid out and drilled the front of the rails:

Added 4 leaves to the front and rear spring assemblies. (Rears shown):

Hand made spring mount plates for the driven steer axle:

Hi Aaron, Thanks! The box is a scale 19', it was originally made for a pup trailer to go behind a 24' main trailer, but that got side lined for this project. I don't have the metal working equipment to do a nice metal bed and my styrene skills aren't the greatess but I used to build a lot of RC airplanes so I thought I'd give it a try. I have some 3/8" aluminum channel (plywood cap) that will fit nicely on the top edge so the loaders and excavators don't tear up the wood.:D

The front tires and rims are just holding the front end up, still got to order the the tires. The wheels were a test in removing chrome. Made a set of rims for the front since it has a TLT drive axle.

http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...psvxg1qvhc.jpg

Got to remove the chrome yet, no shiny stuff on this build.

Thanks for looking!:D

Thanks lapazleo. The only thing Freightliner bought off Oshkosh was the chassis division which makes motor home, bus and bread truck type chassis'. Oshkosh still makes all there own heavy trucks and vehicles. ;):)

Spent a couple hours today making frame affixed fender mounts. Next time I do a build like this I'll mount them to the body. To many alignment issues mounting them separately.:o:rolleyes::)

Thanks, being at the 2 meets at Nate's is exactly why I'm building it, I figure if it gets around there it'll do well any where.

It's kinda like dishes in the kitchen. If you only own 4 plates and 4 bowls....etc the dirty dishes pile stays small.

Big bench means big mess and never more room!

:lol:Yeah I was wondering how long it would be before you'd say that!:lol: the nice thing about it is all that stuff are parts and tools I'm using for this build where as before it was spread all over the place and I'd have to get up and walk around looking for it.:D

Thanks Mario! Maybe someday if they let me back in Canada I can come play in the pit! You said you'd hire owner operators:D

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck

I feel your border pain! Funny you mention it because just today I found out it's going to cost me 2,500 to get a company to file for a waiver for me to get into the U.S. .plus the 580 for the U.S. government . And then only good for a year or up to 5 years and then pay it all over again!
What a great system we live in eh? ;)

Sorry to disrupt you awesome build thread, just scary how you mention border woes the same day I find out about mine:(

Wow they probably got terrorists and just plain weirdos running back and forth and they give someone like you a bad rap, that sucks. When I was in my late teens early twenties (read stupid) my parents lived in Canada and I stayed in the states and had a couple uncomfortable crossings. Never been back. Hope you can get it fixed so you can come back to Indy!

The build is going slow, its details details details . I tried to get some paint work done before the cold set in since I paint in the garage and it's not heated (yet) ;). I really suck in the paint department anyway :(.

Thanks Chris, I'm on rear suspension 2.0, the first one ended up with no tire clearance especially in an off road situation. 2.0 will be similar to a Hendrickson "R" series. Hopefully will have pictures in a week or so.
