Trouble with Taps
So, As the titles says, im having fun with taps... I bought a set of metric taps ( Du-Bro M2x0.4 2.5x0.45 3x0.5 4x0.7 5x0.8)
So to make sure i had right size for right hole i tried them in the tamiya frame holes and the 2.5 goes right through yet the 3m wont go. it just binds and i fear of wrecking the stock frame. did i get the right ones or did i mess up?? |
Re: Trouble with Taps
I think all the tamiya stock holes in the frame rails are a .5mm thread pitch.
Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in... |
Re: Trouble with Taps
3x.5mm is correct. If the tap is binding up on you, don't worry. It is the right size. It's probably just a minor tolerance difference. As long as you are threading it in nice and straight, it will not ruin the existing threads. A drop of thread cutting oil, on the tap or in the hole, is a good idea. You'll need some oil anyway, when you start to tap new holes. The drill size for a 3x.5mm tap is 2.5mm. Hope this helps.

thanks! I'll try it and see what happens.

Re: Trouble with Taps
Instead of thread cutting oil, you might want to try bees' wax. Not quite as messy and works just as good in aluminum.

Re: Trouble with Taps
well i got the 2.5 mm one to work right, screws like it. just the frame has holes drilled not where they are supposed to.. garbage.
