Life on the Pacific Ocean

I've been away commercial fishing Chinook Salmon(trolling) for the last couple weeks. Here's a few video's from the trip. Beware those with sensitive ears...I'm on the water so there is fowl language from time to time:D...No forum sensors out there:rolleyes:.

We had some great weather and great fishing...of course there was the opposite of this as well but who video's that? Very warm water so there was a lot of sail jellyfish floating around. I haven't seen this many since I was a kid so I guess I thought it was cool. Some Dall's Porpoise also came to visit one day and hung around us for quite some time. Normal sort of occurrences on the west coast I suppose but some may find it interesting. Other people pay big money to see the things that I take for granted at work.

Welcome back safe and sound Reg.
Judging from those massive swells in the videos, you had your hands full!

Thanks for sharing. Any chance you could send just a few of those fish our way.;):)

Boy oh Boy, getcha out on the water & the 'talk like sailor' flows out of you... of course there are days on the farm when I abuse the same lingo too. :D

Do you go for days at a time? And just you & your brother for a crew?

Haha, believe it or not it was supposed to be windy out there! We got very lucky as it never came and we had fantastic weather for a few days.

I'll put some fish in the mail for you. It should be there before next season!:lol:

Thanks Wayne. I had my GoPro with me too but never bothered to set it up anywhere. When the fishing is good you don't have much time for that and when it's bad you don't want video of it. A little would probably help explain what we are doing to catch the fish though...

Hahaha, yeah I don't really know if it has much to do with the boat because I'm much the same at home in my garage:rolleyes:. I believe that most of us are a little less "proper" when we are outside the pages of this forum.:cop:

It's just my Dad and I on the boat. We were away from home for a little over two weeks this time and did two fishing trips but normally we aren't gone that long. Neither one of us like to be away from home anymore unless we have too:(

Nice videos Reg, I really enjoy watching this stuff!

So is the fishing your job or another hobby?

Thanks, I'm glad you got a kick out of it.

Fishing is my job I guess. When I started fulltime with my Dad after graduating high school 21 years ago we worked steadily about 10-11 months out of the year. Now we struggle to work half of that because of cut-backs, increased costs and so on. Thankfully I was able to start RCP's! Even though it doesn't replace the missing income from our shortened fishing season, it has kept the wolf away from our door! It has also kept me from having to get a 9-5 job....an idea that I personally dread!

I wish I had a 9-5 job, mines more like 6:30-5:30:lol::lol: Probably like when your fishing.

Were the guys in the video that were down in the hold with fish that appeared gutted and on ice, on your boat?

Haha, we fish as needed depending on the type of fishery(salmon is the most relaxed@ daylight + an hour or two) so the hours vary all the time. If a 24h + work day is required then that's what we do. Food and sleep are luxuries sometimes. It's amazing how long and hard you can work when your pay is based on production not an hourly wage. Plus, when there is no going home at night and you're stuck on the boat you may as well work and try to catch more!

Yes that is our boat and the guys down the hold are plant workers. We sometimes have to unload our own catch but not too often.

Nice video work Reg. Looks like a good haul, do you go by weight or quantity?

Re: Life on the Pacific Ocean

Thanks Keith! We get paid by the pound but there are four different size categories and prices for the chinook salmon. Most of them have red flesh but a small percentage have white flesh(really pale pink) so they have their own grades too. We get paid the most for the largest red ones and the least for all the white ones.

I was away commercial fishing again off and on for the last few weeks. The water temp has been really warm this year off the coast of BC so we've seen some things that we don't see all the time. Here's a few videos of some stuff we saw.

I haven't updated this for quite some time but I have been on the water a bit.

Last week was shark week on Discovery. I guess these sharks knew that I wasn't able to watch at home so they came to me.lol
