It can be done with most radios, have done it with hobbyking 6 channel units and as stated it is best to have matching receivers also lessens the confusion when wiring.

I think it is more which MFC suits the needs of your vehicle?
The MFC01 was the original for most trucks
The MFC02 was made for the F350, Tundra Etc (But sound great in some trucks?)

I have found most 2.4 radios work well, even the cheapie 38.00 one bought off ebay!
My personal preference is the Airtronics RDS8000, all functions work perfectly.

Yes, you can use any 4 channel radio. I have even seen someone using a 4 channel stick radio ( the type with a steering wheel )...
