Making it freewheel at both ends is a much more difficult problem. Something I'd really need to think about. You could grind down the threads at each end so the screw would just spin but...

Sorry I don't know where to get hydraulic stuff for cheap but I did find this build. It's a Menzi-muck in 1:15 scale which is a very similar to the Kaiser. It might give you some ideas.

AMAZING 3D printed 1:87 RC Unimog
I worry about not having space in 1:14 models and this guy is making functioning models in 1:87 HO scale. Not only did he make the model but made a custom transmitter as well! You gotta watch this!...
